I had to check to see who there was and there are a few who played over 100 games in the PL, not all for big teams, but at least at the highest level. Friedal, Howard, Keller and Guzan being the standout names, but its been several years. There really aren’t any standout names from the current crop. Most are playing either in the MLS or #2 in Europe.
The US has had some decent keepers in the past, but right now is there anyone who’s the clear #1 or will Poch need to give a few a chance and just see who comes out on top? I can remember when there were two or three playing in the PL and were established #1 choices. Stefan looks like a good shout. He’s got experience playing at a higher level having spent a few years in England. He’s 29 which is a good age for a keeper and he’s already played for the national team with nearly 30 caps.
Charlie blowing off Horvath is just disrespectful. Horvath and Slonina should be battling for the number one spot. Turner is out of the equation since he’s not even playing. Steffen has been solid lately at club.
You need to be more than just solid in a wc tbf. You also need to see how Poch will want to play. Will he want the keeper to pass out from the back and play a high line with the keeper almost acting like a sweeper. Does the US have defenders who are comfortable receiving the ball?
As a Liverpool fan I remember Brad Friedal who played for us 25 times and over 280 games for Blackburn when they were a PL team. Then theres Howard, Keller and Guzan who were established PL keepers. Its been several years since you’ve had any keepers of their quality tbf.
Nobody watches the Rapids and I get that... but Steffan has been unreal this year. He's been better than any other American keeper in the last six months and it's not close. He's made critical saves in every game and he carries himself like a composed, veteran leader. It would be criminal to ignore him.
Zach Stefan should definitely get a usmnt call up. He is the best in form American goalkeeper right now. Definitely better than the other three keepers in the squad.
The very good positive is that our players are going to Euro team because they are good enough. The very bad thing is that they are not good enough to start and play consistent minutes - instead they are sitting in the bench. Our players are now chasing much bigger name/brand/team recognition first, in order to be able to say I play for XYZ Euro team. With the hope that they get sponsor deals and media recognition. But they are not starting, and in many cases they are not even playing off the bench - at all. So where is the real in-game development and experience going to come from??? Do they think if they ride the bench and play 0-to-5 garbage minutes at the end of the game for Chelsea, that Man City or Barcelona is going to recognize them? These big Top-5 teams are loaded with elite caliber players, and have very very high caliber second squad benches. Our US players can barely play at the second squad level..., definitively not at a consistent reliable healthy way. They will sit on the bench collecting dust until they either demand a trade (but still think they should be traded to Real Madrid), or get traded to a much lower team in some package deal.. They will not gain any value this way. They will not gain any development, skills, experience, or interest if they just sit on the bench. Our players need to aim for the mid-level Euro teams. The kind that team where their talents and skill are needed and will be put to use immediately. The type of team where they will get consistent minutes or start every match. The kind of team that is in the middle of the hunt, and looking to make it to their play-off/knock-out stages. Why is this important...? Because if our players actually provide the spark the mid-level team needed, they can become more of a staple for the team, while playing every match against those Top-5 teams. Players can not afford to get on top-rated teams, just to be in a group picture and nothing else.
We are never going to get to where we want to be by sending players to Europe to ride the pine. We need the best players to come and play in the good old US of A.
its troubling that we don't have a goalkeeper at a high profile team

Steffen has been solid lately at club.
Horvath didn't help his chances with that howler he allowed.
lets forget about turner. he shouldnt be called in anymore.
Crazy to me that Stefan Frei has never sniffed the national team. He’s been one of the best MLS keepers pretty much every year for over a decade.
Its still a big leap to international football where you’re facing world class strikers and well drilled dead ball situations.
How about Brady from the Fire? He’s a solid young keeper

@@1972dsrai all our goalies are bad with the ball at their feet. It’s a shame because a couple of days of hard work can make you a lot better.
Historically this has been our strongest position by far. Now I’d argue it’s our weakest position. What happened?

No brainer - Steffen.
I love You both and this American Soccer Channel so much Dear Jimmy and Dear Charlie.🥰😍🤗

Matt Turner should go to the mls for playing time ? What you guys think
Absolutely. Guaranteed minutes.
Zach Stefan should definitely get a usmnt call up. He is the best in form American goalkeeper right now. Definitely better than the other three keepers in the squad.
Wild that we don't have a good keeper lol
We had at least one keeper starting in the prem for like 20 years in a row and now nothing smh
Steffen is better than Turner but Gaga is the future and we should just give him minutes now
Turner isn't top 5 quality...just another Berhalter boy
Matt Turner is a championship level keeper. Good shot stopper but his feet are a liability
I'm rooting for Zack all the way!

Steffen
You are forgetting names like Chris Brady, celentano too they are solids Keepers

Horvath needs to get rid of that cancer patient haircut before he can play for us
