That's a pretty straight wake. My tiller pilot can't steer that well, and it makes a racket constantly tweaking its course, drives me nuts. Been looking at vanes for a while, this has been helpful. Thank you.
Enjoy your channel. I noticed that James Baldwin (CYS in Brunswick, GA. USA) installed one, recently on a Contessa 26. He put the crossbar on top, you did it underneath. Glad the unit is so versatile and working well. I'm thinking about getting a Vega, as well...
Hi, I am just about to install my Pacific Windfane. I am currently in Spain and have them let install a Planar Heater. Cost for Installation was almost 5000 Euros. Brought me to tears. I wanted to get them the installarion of ma Pacific Windvane as well, but after watching your video, I try it myselfs. The boat is on the hard, I Guess I have to open the package and start slowly, as I dont want to make errors with Installing. I can see, tha we are able to adjust the debth of the blade, going into the water. This is important to me, as I sail soon again from Spain to Vancouver Island, where I Started jears ago. Thanks for your video. Rover
Thx for the video. Again... great info. You're doing it right. making the boat safe and easy to sail. We hear of these systems but don't always get to see them in action. Keep the videos coming. For yrs I had my Ericson 30 in Ladysmith. Things have changed there a lot mind you. Trev
Thanks Trev, the system works great on this boat. Perfectly balanced for the Vega. Prepping for the circumnav so the refit continues before I untie the lines completely. I hope you stay tuned for the adventure!
+A Liquid Life Super videos, thanks! I bought V-2732 in Gothenburg, Sweden, last year and sailed her home to Copenhagen. Your videos are teaching me lots so keep 'em coming. When are you planning on heading for Oz? (PS Duke is a proper sea dog, unlike my two mad spaniels.... www.sailboatsaoirse.com)
chillipeber thanks for the positive feedback! Heading for Mexico this fall from Vancouver Island and then over to Oz through the summer of 2017. I am happy you like the videos. I enjoy making them. We almost have sister ships! Numbers are very close. Fairs winds from Brazil my friend!
So, no doubts or reservations at all with the Pacific Light model?? Looks like an Albin Vega is slightly above the maximum weight the PL is rated for. We're refitting Vega #3360. The wife INSISTS on a vane before we cut the lines.
Gene Neill thanks for the comment. Yes I sailed solo for over 2800nm with this system in varied conditions from extreme light to gale force for days. The PL was like the boat was on rails.. flawless. I do not recommend the horizontal bar like in the video tho. Although I sailed successfully, it did bend the bar and I removed and secured to the rear rail back stay mounts.
That looks like the way to go. Is there a web site I can get from you to look into this bad boy? I have Lilly Too -2761, just finishing up a 2 year retro fit...lol.
Thanks +Larry Wills . The system is perfectly balanced for the Vega and actually came in set up for the transom. The site is www.windpilot.com Imported from German, it took about a week to receive mine. Haven't steered since barely at all! Fair winds!
You blocked out the name of the first windvane and said you looked at numerous other windvanes. My question is did you consider the Cape Horn windvane?
John Reynolds Hi! it was a mister vee.. would be ok for bay sailing but definitely not offshore in my opinion. I did check out that system as well. very good system. I went with the windpilot because of the reviews and their service. and after over 2000nm down the coast, it has operated flawlessly.
sheet to tiller works great but I am currently running offshore passages singlehanded. the single most important piece of equipment for a singlehander is the steering gear. the windvane offers hours, days of problem free steering. I do like to use the sheet to tiller still on shorter passages and as a back up
Would very much like such a system on my Vega. The problem is that my Vega 3242 has a new rodder where You mounted your PL. Do You know if they make some parts for that proplem as well?? Regards from Denmark
They are very versatile with their designs. I would contact them and send drawings of your set up they are very willing to work with you on your specific needs
Sorry for not responding to your answer. I havent seen it, first now a year later, as my problem is the same, and still looking for a solution, and saw your video.......again. I still have the original rodder on my vega, but the original tiller take up a lot of space in the cockpit, and is therefor only for just in case of emergency. Regards from Denmark.
Best Hello to Captain James and I say also WOOF to first Mate Duke ! I would like to know the make or fabrication name of your sturdy, strong Wind-pilote, Please . I am Lars , Sweden, and I have just bought a sailboat, 1974, Marieholm 32, Standard.. Albin Vega is also a Swedish boatmake.Longkeeeled are more secure and also more expensive to produce, because of more man hour labor and glassfiber and resin. I plan to buy a wind-vane or wind-pilote Have to take away some tree-ribs or planks on the platform I guess. Maybe I have to remove the platform completely. Thank you for very nice educational sailing videos,
Whats wrong with naming the poor system? You contacted the company and they were no help. I guess you want other people to buy the crappy system to find out for themselves. Aren't you glade that you could find out about your new system before you bought it? But you don't want people to know the name of the crappy system.. I guess it's a BC thing.
So instead of just reading someones review of the unit you bought, you went out and sarched for someone to ask if they had one and asked hoe they liked it..
+Mazda rx7 yes, another sailor with a similar boat spoke of the windpilot. the reviews were great! and last year an Albin won an Ocean race in England with this system. so with further research and speaking with the owner in Germany, I bought their system.. the previous unit was a Mr Vee.
Great job getting ready to go have a safe trip but please turn the music off or down we cannot hear your comments which is important. Thanks Bruce

Yeah I have a tiller pilot for getting off anchor but for all else it is sheet to tiller or windvane all the way

Great video, wonderfull self steerstuff, good music !!! Greets from Holland (The Netherlands).

Looks like a very nice unit. Clean, simple but yet very cool looking on your boat.
Just look it over.... and have spare parts that you might need, but then again I'm new to sailing and what do I know.... lol
Very informative, love the music!

Thanks man, I'm sold. You should get a commission! ;)

do you have the light version?
Nice video!

How come you didn't stick with your Sheet-to-tiller method???

A Liquid Life
Google Hebridean servo-pendulum shopbuilt self steering. Really works better than some store bought!
Ken Senzig Yes, I built a few systems over the years. Not that one, looks good, maybe I will put one like that on my little racer
Would very much like such a system on my Vega.

Dump the music so we can hear what you are saying
Are you by any chance in Ladysmith?
Hi, yes for the time being! You are on the island?
I'm on Gabriola, I recognized the area, I always go there to fill up with water I like having city water in my tank.
The music makes it to hard to understand your speaking.
Most Yuotubers make the same mistake Music way to loud

Very lightly built units, but they do work.
Did you have this

There is a gut at the yacht club has one of those windpilots. he really likes it. Other guys got the Hydrovane, also very good
