  • For some, movie theaters are like going to church. The movie palace, the local drive-in, even the multiplex is their cathedral. Sacramento at one time was rich with beautiful and unique theaters (and some ugly ones too) as well as multiple drive-ins. Most grand theaters from the past no longer exist for one reason or another-neglect, changing times, changing technology, operation costs, even politics. Of all the places you will see in this film, only three still survive and operate today.
In this collection of clips from the KCRA-TV and KOVR-TV collections, we see the Tower, Alhambra, Fox Senator, Alameda, Capitol, Starlight Drive-In, Sacramento 6 Drive-In, and Century 21 & 22 "Dome" theaters during the opening week of "Star Wars" in 1977, and the Crest featuring a Movietone newsreel of opening night on October 6, 1949, with Gov. Earl Warren and stars from that evening's film, "That Midnight Kiss," in attendance.

It makes me so sad that the Alhambra was torn down; it was an amazing building.

I grew up downtown. Now, 2021, I wouldn’t recognize my hometown. I could walk and be on J Street in 8 minutes.
My favorite theater was the Fox Senator. Loved the Crest and Alhambra…and the Esquire, but to me, the Fox was ‘IT.’
I live in a town in Colorado now and a local candy makers popcorn toffee is great. You can watch it being made,,,and it always reminds me of the Karmel Korn place next door. There is nothing like getting a fresh box of Carmel corn and reaching in and picking outa big, warm ball.
Saturday mornings kids movies for the cost of 3 Pepsi Cola bottle caps was a deal you couldn’t pass up. I miss the Fox to this day. But I miss the overall movie theater experience of that era…..there is NOTHING like it today! Thank you for posting this!

I recognize someone in line to buy tickets. At 5:57, with the long dark hair, mustache and beard is a singer I worked with in the 70s….Freddy Rodriguez.
