I googled these actors' present looks today and it helps me appreciate this movie more. They all aged beautifully. Although it's a 90's movie, Makino here is so pretty and charming.
The actual manga was published from October 1992 until September 2003 maybe that's why the film did not include Tsukasa's mother or the other subplots that we already saw in the latter drama series. :)

Out of all versions of Hana Yori Dango, I feel that they each have a certain quality that makes them amazing. However in my own opinion, I feel that a lot of them don't quite capture the characters, either in character development or personality. Some have even omitted important side characters and events. But in the end all the versions made just prove how remarkable the story actually is

Honestly, I didn't even want to give this movie a chance. A few years back, I randomly clicked on this video and thought it was so ridiculous that I didn't want to watch it. 😂 but last night, I clicked this and decided to watch a just few minutes of the movie. Surprisingly, this movie is actually closer to the manga (although they made a few or a quite a lot of changes). Tsukushi is more feisty here. The Hanazawa Rui in this adaptation is the closest to what he looked in the manga. He captured the melancholic and princely vibe of Rui in the manga. And my favorite character in this adaptation is Shizuka. My gosh!!! She's so calm, so serene, so classy, and so elegant just like in the manga. Also, her English is phenomenal. I also have this theory that this movie version is the inspiration for the college setting in the 2001 Taiwanese version, Meteor Garden - the 90s vibe is so present there.
I only know Rui, Fujiki Naohito in the whole film.Because I ‘ve seen a drama which he played with Ayase Haruka. Fujiki suits playing Rui.He‘s so handsome back then. I recently watched many versions of Boys Over Flowers including the anime and manga.For the live actions ,I love Japan and Taiwan version.

He was charming and his acting was really good.Well,among those live action versions , Rui of Taiwan looks very alike to the manga‘s.And he‘s very handsome.But Rui of Japan ,Oguri Shun‘s acting was better. Over all, Japan version did a very good adaptation,the plot and the chemistry between the main leads are really good. Matsumoto Jun is very charming and his acting is really good. It was in 1995 as it says in the Title. The first Live-Action Drama and the first drama adaptation of the movie started from the Taiwanese Version in 2001, the second season was filmed in 2002. So I don't know what you mean by not comparing it with "older versions" because this IS the "older" one. No, wait, it's the 'oldest' one.
Lee Min Ho is cute and I don't think Matsumoto Jun is that attractive, but Matsujun is still the one and only Doumyoji for me. He and Inoue Mao (Makino Tsukushi) have the most unbelievable chemistry. Not to mention that Inoue Mao made Makino's character really likable and relatable. Geum Jandi was just annoying and whiny to me.
I have to say this is really cute. I like the idea that they wear normal clothes instead of uniforms but I liked it better when the F4 were the only ones that wore normal clothes to school personally, but then this is meant to be a collage instead of a High school so I can see why they changed it. BTW Shizuka's actress speaks great English!
The anime was the first adaptions of hana yori dango that I saw. the most recent adaption F4 Thailand was a masterpiece. I still can't help going back to the older versions though.

if I was not mistaken this was the first live action of the manga. this was came out in mid 1990's so we shouldn't expect too much. for sure we were just babies or toddlers when this first came out. lol we can't just criticize this version because of the clothing/fashion, looks or acting of the actors. instead can we just appreciate this because of the success of the manga and this movie. for me all the remakes were good even the Chinese version. some people should know how to appreciate and respect things no matter how simple or grand the thing is.
This was epic. So nineties and cheesy=I love it! Better communication going on and better resolve of the love triangle, likely because it's a ninety min movie. I rather enjoyed it. 😃
