Best advice I give people is.. don't buy what you can't afford to crash and can replace quickly. I'm not saying that you need to fly thinking about you're going to crash, exactly the opposite. If you can fly without thinking thats my 2K-20K cash in jeopardy of loosing in an instant, that's the way to get confidence. If you can fly with confidence you will fly at your best.
