  • Symphony X are masters of Progressive Power Metal. In this lesson we'll look at a section of The Accolade, where 5 time signatures happen at once in an extreme example of Polymeter in Prog Metal! Polymeter can pack a powerful punch when used properly.

    Excellent stuff. I’ve written material on poly metric stuff in the past and had ignorant comments telling me to just call them polyrhythms… but they’re not! They’re polymeters!

      Thanks man! Huge fan of your channel and transcriptions btw, I remember trying to learn all those Michael Romeo licks from The Guitar Chapter when I was 18.
      And yes, polyrhythm and polymeter get confused all the time. There is some crossover between the two in some cases, but not here!

    I've listened to this song so many times, but I never knew it's 5 time signatures in this section. Shows the level of excellence from Symphony X that can pack so much complexity in the same spot but still sound so smooth that you don't notice something is odd.

    This part of accolade is very similar to a one song of Kansas called Miracles out of nowhere in 2:20. Michael Romeo already said about liking Kansas. It's very beautiful to see artists inspiring from each other in a creative way.

    I enjoyed your video so much 😃 This is the song that introduced me to Symphony X, it has become my #1 band for 5 years now. I was in awe when I first listened to it. And when the song reached this very section, I had to stop walking and my jaw dropped totally! I am now at a stage where I start looking at the composition skills that underly these amazing feelings. So thank you so much for this awesome masterclass! 🙏🔥🧡

    Awesome analysis. I've been listening to this song for years now, and although I knew something was up rhythmically with this section, I never managed to make sense of it. Thanks!
    This part strongly reminds me of "Repression", by Anthriel. Might be worth a look sometimes!

    • @TheProgSchool
      @TheProgSchool  Рік тому +2

      All the instruments in the intro are in 9/8, except the violin which kind of floats over the bar lines. The Communion and The Oracle is another SX song that has a similar polymeric section in it.

      @@TheProgSchool oh you're right, that's the same violin from the interlude, also the guitar in the interlude is the same as the guitar in Accolade 2 before the solo (just as a reference). BTW Comunion and the Oracle has a similar guitar riff, It would be great to have a video explaining all the time signature's changes from the intro.
