  • Getting shut out in a game is always embarrassing. Getting shut out twice in a row is really bad. But what about getting shut out three times in a row? In 1981, less than a year after winning Super Bowl XV over the Philadelphia Eagles, the Oakland Raiders displayed historic levels of ineptitude, becoming the first team since the 1942 Brooklyn Dodgers to be shut out in 3 straight games. This is the story behind the worst stretch on offense of all-time

Also, I just have to say that's pretty remarkable to me that the Raiders were able to have so much success for a good amount of the 1980's while playing musical chairs at QB with Jim Plunkett, and Marc Wilson. And it's not like they played in a cakewalk division either. I'm especially surprised that Marc Wilson was able to last as long as he did with the Raiders.

Marc Wilson was trash. Maybe the biggest mistake Al Davis made. Dude refused to cut bait...too stubborn to acknowledge his mistake. If they had drafted Dan Marino in 1983, they would've remained a contender well in to the early 90's, especially in Los Angeles.

You should do a video about the 1992 Seattle Seahawks because they are considered to be the 2nd worst offense in NFL history next to the 1977 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and they also scored the lowest point total in a 16 game season.

    • @DolFan316

The early '90s were a horrible time for NFL offense in general. The '90 Patriots set the record for fewest points in 16 games, which was broken by the '91 Colts and broken again by the '92 Seahawks. SI even ran a cover story wondering why scoring was so down. NFL teams were averaging about 6 points per game less than they did last season. And TBH I miss those days, scoring now is way too easy.

@@DolFan316 To be fair, the 1990 Patriots and the 1991 Colts had just as a poor defense if not probably worse than their offense. The 1992 Seahawks had a top ranked defense of that year, which made them very imbalanced, which would make a good video for this uploader to do in the future.

If you watch the week 6 game between the 49ers/Cowboys from this year (which I think is still on UA-cam as of this post), which John Madden and Pat Summerall did, you can hear the shock and disbelief in Madden's voice on the Raiders being shut out for the third straight week when the updated scores are brought up on the telecast. Yeah, I read about this stretch for the Raiders in the Pro Football Encyclopedia book I used to have (I liked the book as an overall reference, but so many tiny errors!). I mean, Jim Plunkett had a checkered career but he was good, although Marc Wilson didn't seem to really have it. But this really is odd, especially coming from a defending champ, and a Raiders team that hadn't had a losing record since 1964 at the time. Immediately afterward the Raiders righted their pirate ship & became one of the league's best teams from 1982-'85 (even with dealing with a relocation, practicing in two different cities at times, and playing in a coliseum that did them no competitive favors; I loved the track though:-). When we're talking about World War II NFL-era and making comparisons to it in 1981(certain teams back then, such as the Steelers, Eagles, and Cardinals, had to combine rosters just to field a full squad), that is just not good.

Shut out?! What's that? Being a 49er fan back in '81....that wouldn't happen until I had grandchildren. I didn't even have any kids in '81 and they hadn't been shutout since before I got married in '78. I believe it is still the record.
Felt bad for Raider fans though. That was a tough three games to swallow. Especially after that miracle '80 season. They'd come back though like the Raiders always do.
The '82 49ers joined that list of lossing record after winning a championship. Although that year should never have been played, I'm glad the Redskins got their butts kicked by these Raiders.

This was a truly remarkable, and not much talked about, event. Not even the Tampa Bay Bucs, who lost 26 games in a row, were ever shut out in three consecutive games. Nor were the 0-16 Lions, or the 0-16 Cleveland Browns. And this wasn't just ANY team being shut out three times in a row, it was the defending Super Bowl champions! To this day, it makes no sense. Especially because just a year later they produced one of the league's top-scoring offenses (helped out, no doubt, by drafting Hall of Fame runningback Marcus Allen) and finished 8-1, and then had another high-powered offense the next year and won the Super Bowl.
In fact, if the Raiders had just had consistently slightly above-average QB play during the 1980s, they probably would have won another Super Bowl (or two). If Pete Rozelle doesn't veto the trade that sent John Elway to the Raiders, they win at least two more Super Bowls in the decade and probably win Team of the Decade over the 49ers.
Regardless, this was a great video about a subject I've often wondered about. Thank you for making it.

For modern football, this definitely qualifies as the worst strech on offense. But for historical ineptitude, we look at the 1933-34 Cincinnati Reds. They played 18 league games in those two seasons and were shutout 11 times. The Reds went 3-6-1 in 33, scoring 38 points against 110 points. In the 33 season, they were shutout 5 times (back to back and 3 straight), but did pitch 2 shoutouts; a scoreless draw against Pittsburgh, and a 10-0 victory over Brooklyn. The 1934 season was a disaster. The Reds were shutout in 6 of 8 games and only scored 10 points against 243. The Reds final NFL game was a 64-0 thrashing by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Look at the old players, particularly on offense, on that Raider team. Most of them had glory in the 70's. Shell and Upshaw in I believe their last seasons went back to 60's and sb l. And hard to believe the Raiders would win a sb again in the '83 season having added another crazy man in Alzado. Plus Marcus Allen in '82 draft to give the offense a boost and Mark Haynes by then giving their secondary a boost. And Wow when the Lions shut you out 16-o that is bad. Lions at least had Billy Sims and Bubba Baker and the silver rush and were tough in the Silverdome. Speaking of lousy offenses do a video on the '92 Seahawks who scored 140 pts. that season, the fewest in a modern 16 game season. They were shut out two games in a row and averaged 8.8 pts. per game never scoring more then 17 pts. in any game. Seahawks only had 1,778 yds. passing (or four games worth for Mahomes) on the season, the fewest passing yardage of any team in the 90's. I'm sure expansion Bucs had the fewest. And that in a 14 game season. Some games Seahawks had more punts than pts. And even with that lousy offense in a 2-14 season Seahawks didn't even get the top pick in the draft thanks to a week 3 10-6 win at Pats. 2-14 Pats did. They took Bledsoe, Hawks took Mirer.

Plunkett had an odd career. Wasn’t horrible in NE. Was rookie of the year in 1971 then struggled. Team began 5-0 in 1974 before injuries beset NE and they ended up 7-7.. His whole career was up and down. He was out of football for a year before his Cinderella 1980 season with Oakland that never would have happened had Pastorini not gotten hurt. 1981 was when the clock struck midnight for Plunkett. He would have another Cinderella stretch that ended in another SB ring in 1983 but the fact remains both Plunkett and Wilson were mediocre and held the Raiders back from winning more titles in the 80s

Was it bad? Yes. Worst offensive stretch ever? Not even close. For that I give you the 1977 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. From week 1-12 the Bucs had scored a grand total of 53 points. Yes, 53 points in 12 games. And 23 of those points were scored in 1 game so in a sense they scored 30 total points in 11 other games. They were shut out 6 times(4 in a 5 week stretch). So as bad as the Raiders were here, they don't even come close to this level of futility. 2 seasons later the Bucs were knocking on the door of the Super Bowl. There's a deep dive for you. From 0-26 to 10 points from the Super Bowl.

Advice to the UA-cam creator!!! Your audio is horrible! It sounds like your using a handheld microphone from the 70s. Even if you used a phone made in the last few years, and had a 20 dollar microphone on it, it would sound way better.
Remember, your footage already looks bad because of how old it is, and your opening graphic, is pretty retro looking too. And that's fine. But there is no good reason to have bad audio.
At the very least, pump up the volume by a good 50% to 100%. If your not going to buy a good microphone and use some good audio software and mix it in better, then at least sound louder. Back in 2000 when I was a TV ripper, we used to do that. We would compress the audio to save space, but jack up the volume. That alone can really help. Remember, I can always lower the volume, but I can only increase it to a max of 100. If your still to low sounding, then there is zero I can do about that other then download your video, and re render it myself. Which we are not going to do. So it has to be on your end.
But in 2021, just a 100 dollar microphone can make a massive difference between sounding like a hack who has only 50k subs in five years, or a professional who has one million a year from now.
I feel you could also work on your voice as well. You need to try and sound more professional. l Like a 30 for 30 video. You need to create what is called a "voice over voice". It is a learned voice and in your case, I'm thinking you could start by trying to lower your voice a bit at times, as if you notice, their standard house guys, have a bit of grit in their voices, but not like a singer would. It should come from more power and inflections, and projecting.
And you should also try and convey more emotion as well when your talking. I'm not saying your not at all, but acting, is over acting. Once you realize that, you will never not see it in TV and films. So try and pretend like you are not just reading a script, but that your telling a story. And exciting story. One worth hearing.
Because right now, it sounds like your just reading, and that is fine to read your script of course. But what you want me to listener at home to feel is that your telling an exiting story. One with highs and lows to keep me interested. But vocally. That is what I'm asking you to work on right now. Your vocals. UA-cam some clips to for help, and of course, practice, practice, practice. Practice in the shower, the car, whenever.
Hopefully you will see this all as constructive criticism, and it comes from someone who only wants to help you succeed, but from decades of doing stuff that is similar. Good Luck.
