You've taken a weight off my mind. I've not been able to learn strumming patterns without great difficulty. Oddly, I've always, (and naturally) defaulted to what you've said here. However, was unhappy that I could not learn complicated patterns. One of my favorite uke teachers on youtube said, he ''didn't bother learning strumming patterns', but he didn't go into detail like this. Now I know WHY! Thanks
It is so enlightening to hear someone share the way I think strumming patterns should be. Its free flowing and what your ears here as original song than instead what 90% of the fellas teach in a robotic fashion. I am afraid it just did not work for me to follow rigid strum patterns as its not exactly how the guitarist played it in the song!!
Thanks so much for this lesson, I wish I'd have seen 11 months ago. I asked a different online teacher what can I do so my playing doesn't sound like I'm practicing a chord progression. His answer was "Oh you'll get in time just keep practicing". You gave me the right answer in 11 minutes. Now I've got to practice
Awesomely explained. A song is about the feel, Music is about the feel, It should come from the heart, the rhythm should come from the heart. Miss whichever stem your heart tells you to, Play the part where your heart wants you too. Thank you sir.
After 2 weeks trying to don't get confused with "down and up and down and up and up and down and down and up...", i just found out how useless it is, playing along with the song is easier and better. Now i know i'm not the only one, thanks mate
Absolutely brilliant lesson. Intuition, rhythmic feel, a good dose of syncopation and forget those annoying arrows. This lesson should be compulsory viewing for all budding guitarists young and old. Great job.
And I will add, as a ukulele player, that it should also be compulsory viewing for all budding ukulele players, young and old. Thank you for this video.
Excellent video. I am a beginner+ guitar player always trying to learn song rhythm patterns from tabs. As of today, I will now dismiss those tabs and use lessons learned here to accomplish that goal. Thank you so much!!!
Excellent video and advice as usual from you my friend. Your videos aways make me to grab my guitar and get to work. That's what the best teachers do to their students no matter what the topic may be. Thank you as always!
That was so on point.. This is the best pattern-lesson I ever saw.. I´ll take my hat off to give my best regards to you Sir "Chapeau" ...and at the very end it´s all about the mood ...because music is simply a mood issue..
Thanks for this video. Really good stuff to think about. I feel like I always fall back into my default pattern of DDUUDU and so looking for ways to improve my strumming.
Slightly blinded by the light bulb that just came on! Funny you should mention “machines”, I instantly feel less mechanical after your teaching. Thank you. This is how teaching should be!
totally agree, great advice for all, especially newbies who worry about this fact....if you worry about your strumming you can't enjoy the song.....PEACE
This is the best instruction I've ever seen on this subject - maybe because it confirms what I already believe. Thanks! Question: before "scrubbing through" I play the chords one time per measure as I sing to help learn the progression. Is there a name for that?
The first strumming I did was Wonderwall because I knew the song so well, its impossible not to get it right when its ingrained in you. Could not strum any other song, when I found out it was 1/16 ths I realised the rhythm is in you. I never use strumming patterns now.
Wow..yea..no wonder that after 1.5 years..od trying to learn..i didn't get nowhere..thanks so much..this helps..i don't mind practicing if it's not frustrating..and trying to learn some elses idea...feeling is everyrhing..
When ever I watch guitar tutorials, I always ignored the strumming pattern because I could never do it just like they did. I just listen to the song and played with the song and that’s how I can do the strumming. It was a lot easier for me. Jose down down down up down down up down I get really confused. My brain can’t even interpret up to well.
Funnily enough I always used strumming pattern tabs only to get an idea and then didn't follow it like a slave because it felt too difficult but only played something like that, something that felt natural and comfortable for me as a beginner / early intermediate.
Go to “Mark the guitar guy” and look at his play list. He has a 14 part lesson on strumming where he introduces the tick-Tock method of strumming. He explains how to do the arrows and the awkward feeling rhythms. Took me twice to nail the rhythm using his technique. It’s really fun to play when you have it right. Brilliant is showing you how, not giving you permission to fail.
Is it legal if I think they both have part of the picture? Clearly Noel Gallagher did not "fail" at recording Wonderwall. Tick tock helps many people keep time. Maybe it would even help me if I could play through the learning curve. But if it becomes another barrier that stops people playing the music they want to play then they absolutely have "permission" to forget it and play the way they feel or the way the music was recorded.
Guitar? That's woman's work! If you're a man you play the drums! No son of mine will ever play guitar! Not in this house! This is a house of drummers! Real musicians!
alan duncan I’ll give you that the drums are the glue that binds a band together. But if you don’t have guitars and other instruments. You don’t have anything to glue too 😬All instruments go hand in hand. I was playing “wagon wheel “ with a few mates in a pub. One of the guys had a mandolin. Man it was a privilege. The mandolin filled in so well. Another guy had a dembei drum and that did its job well too. But without a(my)acoustic guitar. It would have sounded empty. All musical instruments add flavour. Give your children the freedom to express themselves with whatever instrument fits them and their style of music. Peace love and music.

This is the lesson I've been looking for ages, thank u sir!!

Awesome ideas.. Thanks for validating what many of us have been thinking and giving us the freedom of expressing music in out on various styles.
Thank You Sir, great insight! Music is truly an 'art' not a program.. love & respect from middle east!
Definitely one of the best video on this subject! thank you so much

Excellent session on feel, intuition, emotion and spontaneity. I’ve struggled with the “correct strumming pattern”
Very well stated and wonderfully demonstrated.
As a newer string instrument player, this was BRILLIANT and super helpful! Thank you!

I agree with this completely especially when playing solo acoustic. However, there’s no way around the timing issue when playing with a band
Fantastic... Proper teacher
Good to know that I don't have to be perfect, the secrets out, I just gotta feel the music, you made it easier to do.. Thank you!#2thumbsup!
Probably one of the best guitar learning lesson, thank you!

This is interesting 👍 thanks
Sir you are the David Attenborough of guitar teaching, thank you 🙏
Great lesson
Very useful info, thankyou sir.✌🎶👍
Love your teaching style👍🏾

Mine can't interpret down and..what is that?
I agree - if I just listen I can usually play the rythme, but thinking about it too much really throws me off for some reason.
OMG you're amazing thank you so much
You, sir, are an excellent teacher. I wish I had found you earlier.....
Funnily enough I always used strumming pattern tabs only to get an idea and then didn't follow it like a slave because it felt too difficult but only played something like that, something that felt natural and comfortable for me as a beginner / early intermediate.
Again CAUTION! This gent is attempting to turn us into real guitar players vs. stunted amateurs.
Great advice and a new subscriber 🎸
Great philosophy!
Ty
Its hard to strum a pattern exactly with while singing as it sounds and is easy to perform with out singing

I go by hearing the song
that's good but your other video on the same topic is epic n changed my life..now I usually confuse cos I can play any song using 2-3 patterns..
I cant' believe I just found this challenge. As a new guitar learner this is such invaluable lessons. Thank you so much!
Thank you excellent sir. It's gonna be real
Fantastic!
You should do some dvds and sell them!
Thank u sir
Have you listened to the charts lately? Machines have taken over!
My early days learning old stones songs....lol
❤
I am so glad I dont have to follow those strumming patterns on Ultimate Guitar, they are stupidly difficult.
Eccellente! !!
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👐🏾🙌🏾
Wonderwall uses a CAPO!!!!
Seems machines are already taking over music making.
