AGB_SamaLama why do you think you’re not free? Don’t you have your own Scottish parliament that are perfectly able to spend money on whatever they please?
Well, you're kind of implying there's a connection between the two: if you pay attention to the graphic you'll see there wasn't. Anyway the British Empire didn't so much conquer the world as colonise it, a subtle but important difference.
Is no one talking about how at 1:46 - 1:50 Deira just made the one who colonised it a colony of itself? It’s like: Africa’s decolonisation: who are you? Deira: I’m you, but stronger
After Aedilric died, Bernicia under Aethelfrith took Deira and combined the two into 1. Aethelfrith died in combat. Edwin, who was the youngest son of Aedilrics brother took over. Edwin died fighting Mercia and Edwin's cousin Osric became King of the combined Kingdoms. Edwin died fighting Gywnedd. Edwins brother Osric then became King and also died fighting Gywnedd. Oswald (son of Aethelfrith) came back and united all of the clans of Bernicia and Deira and then captured a lot of land before getting killed by the King of Mercia. Oswine (son of Oswald) was elected King of Deira and Oswiu (son of Aethelfrith) was king of Bernicia. Oswiu attacked Deira and Oswine refused to fight and went to hide instead. He was turned in by his own men and executed. After that Oswiu killed the King of Mercia and controlled them for a few years. He also subdued the kingdoms to the north of him and was honorary 'Overlord' of Saxon Britain.
Æthelfrith of Bernicia managed to gain control of Deira and exiled one of Deira’s young princes, Edwin. King Rædwald of East Anglia protected Edwin and fought alongside him against Æthelfrith at the Battle of the River Idle and Æthelfrith fell to the sword. Edwin then swooped back up north and took control of both Deira and Bernicia, solidifying what would later become the Kingdom of Northumbria. Edwin was actually pagan but converted to Christianity towards the end of his life.
but they're not just english toffs,, you have a say in who leads you, Scotland takes part in the elections, thats kinda the point of the union. I agree it could be a bit more balanced, but the solution is not to break off the union. The union was made over thousands of years of political evolution on the island, saying "phhft, they're all a bunch of english toffs" is close-minded and frankly foolish. Independent England, Scotland etc will only lead to the island as a whole becoming irrelevant, the Union is the only chance the British people (not just england) have at influencing world politics. I understand the will for independance, but Scotland is already very autonomous.
Vedat Işıktaş funny thing is, Alfred the greats family line is what kept the Danes/Norsemen out of Wessex. Alfreds son Edward the elder was successful to reunite England as a whole. Edwards sons Eadred and Aethelstan also proved to be worthy. Eadred drove the last Viking king of York, Eric Bloodaxe. York was occupied by Vikings for a while, but thanks to Alfreds family line, he saved England.
maxis2k Well Munster wasn’t a house but it was a kingdom but a house did rule it they just weren’t called house Munster, like my clan the Mag Huír (Maguire) Ruled the Kingdom of Fermanagh
Nah it makes sense tbh. I’m Irish but I understand why it’s called that. Britain controlled us for a long time and other smaller islands near Ireland and the UK were also part of Britain. The Republic of Ireland is a proud country that isn’t part of Britain but it was called the British isles for so long there really isn’t a point in changing it. 🤷🏻♂️
It's actually kind of misleading here because the King of Scotland, James VI, was also the King of England, as James I, so England and Scotland were already under one monarch.
Chris Klitou I regard Britain as united 1603-49 because of that, one ruler and not continuous parliaments. 1649 Scotland moved its own way but 1651 Cromwell reconquered it, and united again under the restored monarchy. I regard Scotland as indy again 1688-1707, when continuous parliaments got going and had nominal consent over which king to accept, and in tbat period it was ruled by a parliamentary cabinet of aristos on the king's behalf. This explains why there were 2 unions. Why don't you show the Tweed border from 1018? What is the late Middle Ages stuff about "Chester (Eng)" and the Welsh marches shown in lighter red than England?
It was Scotlands idea because the English bankrupted Scotland, Scotland had no other choice and because a dozen or so wealthy Scots were offered bribes by the the British crown.
I like how the comments section is made up of either nationalists, people pissed off about being invaded by England, or people just admiring the editing.
I mean the people being pissed off about being invaded by England are also nationalists. There's a lot of nonsense that goes on in the comments that don't reflect life today at all. It's just a few isolated people trying to relive fantasies in their heads.
Nationalists hating on the English imperialism is funny - usually its envy, lack of awareness to motives.. It's like the Spanish nationalists try act like their empire sole purpose was good Catholics
The war of the roses started when the kings of englands servant didn't put milk in his tea so the king declared war on him and it just so happens he had an army, FACT
Fascinating. It's amazing to see so many centuries of change and upheaval encapsulated in a few minutes of film. It made me wonder how many people fell to the sword, or the arrow, or the boiling tar just to enable these many hundreds of boundaries to exist at all, however fleeting. So much seemed to be happening, I kept trying to freeze the clip and rewind whenever a huge flash of colour appeared for a brief microsecond before it was gone again! I think I might have enjoyed a slower version of the clip a lot more. It would give my slow brain time to absorb the information better, because I love ancient British history. But I did think at one point I was gonna have an epileptic seizure, there was much rapid colourful interchange! Lol. Great video. 👍
You covered the history of Scotland and Ireland very well Ollie, good job. Most videos out there about the British Isles and Ireland don't cover the history as good as you'd hope. Nailed it, keep up the good work.
I was impressed at 577 (1:38) to visually see the results of the Battle of Deorham that took place in the West Country in which the West Saxons defeated the Britons, separating the Welsh Britons from the Cornish. Very detailed, great job.
Yeah, it must’ve been a devastating defeat when the Saxons took the Severn Valley, forever separating the Britons of Wales from the Britons of Cornwall; it was essentially the final nail in the coffin for British resistance in the land we know today as England, and marked the end of the sub-Roman period, bringing in the beginning of the Anglo-Saxon hegemony. It’s amazing how the Cornish actually managed to survive and maintain their identity despite having only a small amount of land in the very corner of the South West coast; the Welsh, of course, were in a much better position to defend themselves, and did so successfully until England finally conquered them some seven centuries later!
He didn't defeat the Vikings he literally hired Viking mercenaries from Waterford and hired Viking boats to transport his troops. He was fighting a rival Irish King and he didn't end up uniting Ireland completely but he was close. That's a common myth retelling of the story that came from a book his ancestors wrote about him but not the actual history.
@@PotatoStickman200 He played Norse & Danes agaisnt each other, but nonetheless the kingdom of Tuath Mumhain under the O'Briens smashed Norse/Dane supremacy over the Dublin, Limerick & Clare regions, and effectively ended their monopoly in the regions - the fact that they no longer took tribute from the Irish within their territory effectively ended any effectivity of statehood that they may have had. It is a missing piece of the map, as is Brian's domination of most of Ireland, excluding O'Neill lands, and arguably Mide and the southern extremities of the island.
I hadn't realized before how important the Norse invaders were to England's unification. They swept away the remaining petty kingdoms around the edges so that unification was possible justified by the need to drive them out.
we didnt just put up a good fight, we were the first to conquer the whole island. the kings of Scotland, namely the stuarts, scottish king james and his descendants, were the kings of england and the first to unify britain and the isles.
The Catholic Crusader Your kingdom died a long long time ago , it was we english who founded the empire and we are the only ones who seem to care about all that we achived , while you scottish just want to further divide what used to be a truly great nation
Oh well, then your ancestors should have been stronger and smarter to repel the invasion. No good complaining centuries later. You should consider yourselves lucky that the English are a benevolent people who incorporated you entirely in the kingdom, rather than basically enslaving your entire population as other kingdoms might have done.
@@jamieevans3666 all of British culture lost a lot including England. you have to remember it was outsiders like the French who came and ruled for a long time.
@@jamieevans3666 that isn’t really true. There have been many welsh monarchs and Scottish who have ruled over England and Wales etc. also it wasn’t just the normans they were just the first.
Love how Scotland is more or less stable most of the time since "the kingdom of scotland" is created whereas England keeps loosing and re-taking territory
Also the reason England and Scotland United into a single country was because they had the Same King, which only happened because English royalty married into the Scottish royal family, and then later the same English royal family ran out and the closest heir was the Scottish King. Scotland is probably the strongest part of the whole country, even if it does have the worst weather lol.
Wales and Scotland also get the short end of the stick. People tend to focus on English history. As an Englishman, here’s what I say: Blooming English Historians.
Points that really stood out for me: 1) Alfred the Great really was great. Look how fast he conquered the country, despite having to chew through tons of Vikings along the way! 2) Scotland unified so much more quickly than England did. 3) starting to appreciate what a pain in the butt the Jacobites must have been. Imagine having to take back all of Scotland every few months!

In history lessons in Primary School, people get taught that something happened to Boudicca (I can't remember much, it was probably something like the Romans taking her land away, or her husband, or was it that her whole family was killed? Or was that someone else?) and she got really angry and led the Iceni against the Romans, I think it was maybe because the Romans betrayed her husband or something like that, but her armed uprising failed and she poisoned herself so she wouldn't be captured alive by the Romans.
@@BoraCM her husband died, he left his lands partially to her and her daughters and partially to Rome, Romans didn't accept it and took it all for themselves, whipped Boudicca in public and had her daughters gangraped by Roman soldiers to make an example of them.
Don't confuse unity for civilization, Ireland during this time period was the center of academia in western Europe. It was one of the few places the Romans had not conquered and when Rome fell it was the only place that was safe and literate enough for scholars and monks to flee to. Irish monasteries replicated literature that would have otherwise been lost to time. They had a very advanced civilization despite their division. Literacy and knowledge flowed from Ireland and helped bring Europe back out of the dark ages.
@Finn Spooner No, they didn't. They established a single outpost at Drumanagh. The unique Gaelic legal system would not have survived centuries of Roman occupation.
@Finn Spooner no, there is actually no evidence whatsoever of a Roman invasion of Ireland. There is evidence of trade between Ireland and Roman Britannia and there is evidence of a single Roman outpost just north of what would become Dublin, there is no written evidence of the Roman conquest because it didn't happen and also the lack of written evidence is pretty good evidence in itself that it did not happen. The Romans were a warrior culture and there would certainly be records not just of the military campaign but also of the governance and occupation of Ireland. Another fact that works against the hypothesis of a Roman conquest is that Ireland lacked large cities due in large part to the unique legal, cultural and political structure of Ireland. Most of the population of Ireland was rural and post-Christianity most political and economic activity in Ireland was centered around monestaries because there were few notable cities that early, even Dublin would not be founded until centuries later when the Vikings arrived. The Romans would have set up shop somewhere and they would have needed a city to govern from, even if they created it themselves and there would certainly be evidence of that whether the city began as an Irish settlement conquered by Rome or Roman occupation led to the creation of a new city. So stop saying there is evidence of a Roman conquest of Ireland, there is literally zero evidence to suggest that and it clashes with major known facts about ancient Ireland.
@Finn Spooner I don't think anyone ever claimed they didn't reach it. They conquered the island right next to it and held it for centuries, it's not a huge leap of logic to think maybe they sent people to check out the neighborhood.
Petro Beherha : There is nothing to be proud of our ancestry ( except they transferred life to us) They were beasty tyrannical, always some nation attacked other nations: Roman,Alexander Ganges khan, moguls, Ottoman, Britain empire, Soviet Union, American Eagles, all had one purpose: To oppress& kill others to plunder their belonging resources. +abideen turky I know for a fact that Romans were pretty good in Gauls. First they originally "invaded to help celtics clans who lived there and were allied to them. Of course it was to the detriment of the neighbouring clans they were fighting, but celtic clans never got along for too long, so there would have been conflict either way. It was fine back then because the conflict were staightforward and not nearly as bloody as modern ones. When you fight so much yo have got to agree to some limitations if you don't want everyone to get whipped out. Then the Gauls were inferiors, and then second rate citizens for some time, but eventually some became roman councils and politicians. Besides the Roman integrated the gaulish gods (they shought equivalent in the Roman pantheon and gods of the two people were often represented together in Gaul), and some romans stationed in Gaul addopted roman gods like Epona. So no religious purge or anything. And Roman technics in architecture and politic organisation, not to mention the commerce and combat tactics, were very beneficial to the Gallo-Roman. Then after the fall of the western roman empire, feudalism granted the pesant some security and prevented them to be killed or plundered every two days by passing "barbarians". Then the unification of the state and the strenghtening of the royal power quelled local conflict between nobles. As did the Crusades (in European territory I mean), which began to help the christians orthodox in Constantinople, when they had to face invasions from the muslims. Then the creation on a republic lowered the gap between the rich (who were all nobles) and the poors (peasants) and guaranteed the same rights for all. Of course there were abuses, corruption and hatred every step of the way, but nowaday it is hype to be pessimistic and hateful toward humankind, and it pisses me off. The same thing is happening every time people talk of the EU, and most of these guys don't even know what the ECSC was... That's why history is important, and why it need to be objective and show the abuse and the good deeds and intentions whenever there were any.
You should be pretty fucking proud to be a man of the isles you have a lineage thats probably a mile long and men from this islands conquored 1/4 of the world and being at war was just standard practice at the time it couldn't be helped

Amazing job! I have one little suggestion for future projects - avoid using similar colors for different entities, especially if they both exist at the same time, it can sometimes be difficult and confusing to distinguish which is which. Different shading is OK though - for vassals/dependencies.
As an American, I find this fascinating. All that feudalism and vassalage that led to the formation of Great Britain. I admittedly need to explore this further.
You know the funny thing? How civilizations could rise from a broken empire and then rise up , unify and take over half of the world as an global empire
That’s pretty much the entire story-method of civilisation. A tribe becomes agricultural/pastoralist semi-nomads (Neolithic Revolution), they eventually evolve into city settlements with advanced concepts, animal domestication, tool making, trading, techniques, architecture, warfare and ideologies. Then another tribe conquers them, absorbs their cultural achievements, unify themselves from several city states, creates a maritime or land-based empire, and then the process is repeated.
@@dyread This is nothing to do with politics lol. Its purely geography. Avena Sativa : Common sense is not so common, even in the House of Commons. Ireland is island, it is naturally all Irish want to claim their country. rest is Bullshit & waste of time.
I guess the troubles with Ireland go all the way back to when Irish Slave Traders regularly abducted people from the landmass we now call Great Britain.... And the Irish were perfectly happy to jump on boats and dominate other people such as the Picts. I just see it as population movement and illustrates perfectly well that the idea of 'the Irish' being a distinctly separate people from those on the landmass of 'mainland' Britain is a fallacy. And given that the Scots came from Ulster and have strong connections with that area throughout history just indicates how crass and ill thought the idea that just because Ulster is in Ireland that therefore it should be part of Eire - when put to the vote the people of Ulster voted to stay British... therefore drop the issue and move on to creating better British Irish relationahips instead of digging up old bitterness inspiring half truths...
Allan Thomson and then it was a Norse slaving centre and then the Norman's invaded England and then Wales and decided they wanted an empire which included both islands and Corsica and Sardinia and then the French kings of England wanted that same empire - 590ce to 1066ce the English didn't look at conquering anyone, they even built a wall to keep the Welsh out. It was the Norse then the French Kings, then the German and Dutch kings that have used England as a base to invade Ireland Wales and Scotland.

Yeah it's hard to be united when you're surrounded by people with no respect for thw country
Owen Cradoc without England, Scotland and wales are insignificant.
Owen Cradoc not only would you be insignificant but you would also be poor
but they're not just english toffs,, you have a say in who leads you, Scotland takes part in the elections, thats kinda the point of the union.

It's actually kind of misleading here because the King of Scotland, James VI, was also the King of England, as James I, so England and Scotland were already under one monarch.
Oh
Not really. England didn't take over Scotland, they joined in a union with them. The union was actually Scotland's idea.
It was Scotlands idea because the English bankrupted Scotland, Scotland had no other choice and because a dozen or so wealthy Scots were offered bribes by the the British crown.

Fascinating. It's amazing to see so many centuries of change and upheaval encapsulated in a few minutes of film.
It’s amazing how the Cornish actually managed to survive and maintain their identity despite having only a small amount of land in the very corner of the South West coast; the Welsh, of course, were in a much better position to defend themselves, and did so successfully until England finally conquered them some seven centuries later!

well that's probably due to the fact that scotland is far north, mountainous and, at the time, not really very developed/not really much there
Also the reason England and Scotland United into a single country was because they had the Same King, which only happened because English royalty married into the Scottish royal family, and then later the same English royal family ran out and the closest heir was the Scottish King. Or was that someone else?) and she got really angry and led the Iceni against the Romans, I think it was maybe because the Romans betrayed her husband or something like that, but her armed uprising failed and she poisoned herself so she wouldn't be captured alive by the Romans.

I love how Wales emerges first as a developped civilization
More a case of the first place where one bastard managed to succesfully kill every other bastard who wanted power in the local vicinity lol

I know for a fact that Romans were pretty good in Gauls.

It was the Norse then the French Kings, then the German and Dutch kings that have used England as a base to invade Ireland Wales and Scotland.
I just wanted to say that i love Ireland and Scotland :D Greetings from Poland.
Why do most poles specifically immigrate to england and not scotland or ireland?

@@dragooll2023 true, some polish kid came to wales, a little annoying douchebag who wouldn’t stop talking, I heard he got hit by a car, I dunno what else happened tho. Defo was after money though, wouldn’t stop trying to get with girls who have cash
And England
They weren't exactly "isles" when humans arrived. People walked over doggerland before the North Sea filled in and the English channel formed.
Big brain
Ireland was an island though. The *real* reason why there are no snakes in Ireland is because there never were - it lost its land bridge to Great Britain before snakes migrated north.
Peter Downey that’s actually quite interesting
42,000 BCE 20,000 BCE Wow OK let's pay no mind to sea level changes. Hint: These weren't islands.
Dog land
@@antonioklaic4839 doggerland all the way
Jett Slappy nothing is an island everything is connected
Jett Slappy Yes, obviously it was all the heavy industries polluting the atmosphere in 42,000 BCE which caused the sea-level rise.
Well this vid takes place well after Doggerland. So.
I LOVE these videos! As a history nerd I love watching them. There's something so satisfying about them. Thank you for the great content always!
I've never thought that there was a region called "Anglia", we call Englad as Anglia in our hungarian language.
Same in Greek
There still is a region in England called Anglia. It's one of the counties, which are like regions within the countries in the uk
Anglia was the place in northern germany/southern Denmark that the English came from originally

This is a great video! I wondering if after 1998, Scotland should be a lighter shade of red, and 1999 so should Wales, since they got devolved Parliaments then. I'm not sure when or how you would colour Northern Ireland differently, since their devolution history is a bit more complicated...
Keep up the good work, this is the coolest and most detailed British Isles history map I've seen :)
@Oliver Higgins For now 😏
@Oliver Higgins They are smart which is why they'll vote for independence come next referendum! The Welsh should do the same btw, bout time us Celts unchained!

I wanted to make something like this, but I quickly came to realize how difficult an undertaking it is. This is amazing. Watch it at a slower speed to really get the most out of it. How do you make your videos?
Wizardry. He got some pretty esoteric rulers in there as well. Some fantastic research went into these.
