I absolutely agree! It seems that the converters are better, and it has a usb-c cable used also to supply power to the unit this time. The new model has also the possibility to set up the loopback function, a new feature compared to the previous one! I hope also that this time, the converters's dinamic range declared, could be similiar to the Julian's measurements
Thank you for doing this review Julian! A great help for sure as I've been eying up this interface for a while now. Would be great if you do a review on the Audient ID4 to compare, as it is completely bus-powered and has different AD/DA converters inside too! :)
I use the Audient iD14 in my voiceover studio. Happy to read such a positive review. Totally agree on the steps of the monitoring knob. I have used this with Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (250 ohm) and Sony MDR-7520 (24 ohm) headphones. Have to turn it all the way up to get an ok signal level w the DT770, making it problematic for fine editing, whereas there is plenty of headroom with the 7520 to make your ears bleed if you like that sort of thing. The low roll off at the lower impedance is an interesting issue but with spoken word, I have not encountered an issue, especially as the 7520s perform at 8-50k frequency response, so Sony said. (Alas, my favorite headphones ever can no longer be gotten.) HUGE CAVEAT to the iD14: the firmware is funky in working w Protools. There is a STATE file that you have to find in your library and trash on a regular basis because frequently, you'll open a session, or even continue a session and find you have NO headphone monitoring. The meters are moving in the DAW but no sound in the interface. Super painful because the fix is trashing the STATE file, then pulling the plugs on the id14, rebooting the Mac, and plugging the iD14 back in. But the good news is usually you only have to do that once per occurrence. Usually. Sometimes it takes two restarts, which is really a serious loss of time and a major annoyance. That is what has cooled my jets on recommending the iD14 any more. Audient is at a loss to explain the problem and because it comes from the UK, the whole servicing methodology and time frame was too much of a pain to do (I'd have to buy an equal backup interface to keep working, and why do I want to do that?) that I continue to live with the issue.
Thanks for the greatly in depth review! Amazing as always! Watched it all the way even though I already have an audient and don't plan on buying another soon. Absolutely agree your take on the volume knob, I wish they'd have made it like the mic gain knob instead, which particularly also feel much nicer to use. I always giggle when you switch to the Steinberg preamp noise.
Very very detailed and informative! It would be a blast if you could do such a video about Latency and also Real Life Performance Latency, such as testing how many plugins can you load on your PC with the specs shared of course. Best regards and Danke schoen!
One thing I want to see also for future videos is Latency with VST Plugins before switching to higher buffer size. For live keyboard performances or FX. Interfaces behave differently with low buffer size.
Thanks for your great reviews Julian! I’d really like to know what you think of the Apogee Duet interface. Is it really worth the extra money? Keep on rockin’ ...
You probably make the best audio related reviews I've ever seen on UA-cam. Im currently looking for a new Interface. I initially wanted to go with the Motu M4 but after waiting 3 months I've given up hope that it'll ever be in stock anywhere. Can you give a little preview on your upcoming reviews? Im particularly interested in the Audient iD14 MKII and the Black Lion Audio Revolution 2x2. Sadly the manufacturers aren't as transparent as I'd like when it come to the specs. That doesn't exactly give me high hopes.
I kind of regret watching this video, regardless that it's well done and helfpful like always (thanks for the great content). The reason is that i've bought an audient id4 a few months ago and I was pretty happy with it's performance until right now :D The performance with 32 ohm headphones is a huge bummer, because I guess that it is highly likely that the id4 has the same issue here as it's big brother, the id14, isn't it?
You shouldn't have a lot of regret - I consulted Audient directly and they insisted on id4 and 14 being virtually same spec-wise, the only main difference being the second channel and powerbrick requirement.
Boromir Smith well okay, but than the 32ohm performance is definitely an issue and I need to reconsider the acquisition of 250 Ohm headphones or so. Because I actually discarded this idea just so recently :D
@@JulianKrause in any case I am from now on unsure if I actually HAVE noticed a loss of low-end information :D But on the other hand I guess I am not expirienced enough to decide if it is was too less low-end or if it was the normal amount of low-end you get when one is using headphones (especially for mixing and mastering music). But in the end you have actually given me some food for thought and this is why I am quite thankful in the end :)
I am confused. I have id4, not 14, but it is supposed to be virtually same spec- and functionality-wise - and my set of led diodes do serve as input meter.... or, wait. No, you are right - they are actually monitoring the audio coming _back_ to the headphones (that's why I have to have the listening knob set 100% to "input" in order for the leds to serve as a clipping warning tool). Damn. Now I want such independent, direct input monitoring display too. I guess Motu interface was really nice spec-wise and had a good display screen for that... Also, it's worth pointing out that id4, being a single-channel version of id14, doesn't need the powerbrick. It's still a bummer that other double-input interfaces work just fine without one, while id14 needs it for some obscure reason, though...
@@DarkPa1adin Audient representative maintained that the performance differences between 4 and 14 are for all intents and purposes negligible when I pestered them about it, so I'm sticking with their word on the matter.
@@Hugmir ua-cam.com/video/euNX_kbvDEc/v-deo.html they sound the same, but if you want more gain capacity, that SAME DESIGN, isn't the same as SAME SPECS

Still, to me the convenience of no additional power adapter counts. The software seems to differ, though, and I forgot to mention that. I do seem to have way simpler menu on my 4. Thanks for the video!
@@FoodTechLife It actually only meters the system meter but if you have the Mic set up to the mains, it will effectively be a meter for the gain on the microphone...

Excelente Review! I own an Audient id14. I was wondering how this interface compares to the ssl 2 in terms of the converters' dynamic range. The id 14 has higher dinamic range. Does it have a positive impact for listening? So as to have a more accurate representation of frequencies while mixing. Which one has a better listening experience? Id14 has 117 db vs ssl 110db. What's your insight?
Hey there Julian, Happy New year--praying it really will be a happy one for the world, and I hope you and yours are well and safe. I really appreciate your work, the information is presented objectively and in an entertaining and somehow reassuring way, and I always benefit from your insight and expertise. Well done! Wondered if you'll be reviewing the just released MK II version of the ID14 and the ID4. I currently have the original ID for and have been very happy with that but need to do some work in stereo-- I'm torn between the idea of having two new beautiful Audient preamps with incredible conversion versus getting what I gather are very good (equally good?) ones on the MOTU M4, along with a couple of line inputs. The JFET input option with Audient is great to have, but you lose one of your mic inputs using it, but I could use my current ID for for that and still have stereo recording on the new model. But I'm going to hold off on a purchase decision till you've had a chance to enlighten us! (Hoping you're working on a review already!) Take care.
The level indicator I believe is for direct monitoring and if i am not mistaken direct means that is directly coming from the input, through amplifier of course, and if the monitor peaks, so as the input.
Great Video! I love these thorough reviews of audio equipment. Really comes in handy for when choosing an interface. I just have a question regarding the id14 and id4. People say that the id4 has driver bugs when it comes to windows ten. Any perceivable problems or is it all good? Furthermore, I would love if you could add the id4’s headphone performance to the graph to see if it differs. Cheers from Sweden.
Amazing review, as always, Julian! I've asked this on another video but did you consider testing higher-end interfaces? I know there is a smaller audience for that but it would be interesting to see if premium interfaces actually perform better for every spec. I am thinking RME Babyface, Slate's VRS8, something like that.
Hi Julian.. Nice review.. Can you try discussing audient id 4.. I had a chance with it and found them faulty from the perspective of mute and scroll control functions.. Would be great if you could do video on it.. I made two replacements already.. But very good product for the time I used it..As you said, works well with high impedance headphones
I got Schecter Omen Extreme 7 with stock pickups and with really really STRONG pick attack it can clip the DI input, on minimal gain knob of course. I've read some people with hot pickups have clipping problem, like one with EMG pickups and another with some Meshuggah signature 8 string pickups. So keep in mind that there can be problems with hot guitar pickups.
Hey! I really enjoy your videos :) Thank you for them! One small question - I have the Audient iD4 (I bought it a long time ago...) I was wondering which headphones will be good to work with and I was looking at the DT 770 PRO 250 Ohm Beyerdynamic. There is a version of 80 ohms and a version of 250 ohms. Should I take the 250 ohms? Will the Audient iD4 give a good performance with them or do you recommend a different set of headphones? I will use them for recording and for audio cleaning (RX). Thanks!
Hi Julian, great content! Regarding iD14 output impedance of 22,90 ohm. Are headphones with 63 ohms (sony mdr-7506) impedance still ok, or is the sound too distorted? Thanks for your time and clarity in your videos!
Good review. As a voiceover artist who use 1 large diaphragm condenser microphone and nothing else, i wonder which interface is better sounding between Audient ID4 (or Audient ID14) and SSL2
Hey Julian, Appreciate all your videos. My wife streams with a sure SM7b, and the audio has always been quiet. She also uses I think a first gen Focusrite along with a cloudlifter, but there's still a hummmm in the audio. So far with your reviews the Motu2 looks like maybe the best pre-amp we can get for her? However, a lot of people are recommending the GoXlr, and I was hoping you can provide your opinion, or some advice here. The SM7b isn't being used for recording, so post processing is not what we're looking for, we're looking for clean audio to be passed through live to her streams. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
I think the SSL2 has the most gain to drive the Sm7b without a cloudlifter and also have the air mode to brighten up that mic if she needs too. That's like post processing but its on the unit.I'm not sure if what I say is valid cause I own the Audient but you should be able to confirm it.
If you’re looking for cleaner audio, it might be worth using the Yamaha MG10XU because it is good for live processing of audio before it goes into the machine, and is priced around 200USD. It can power the SM7B just fine.

Julian Krause maybe I don't understand it enough. But is there any significant different in "sound color" between ad, da and preamp? As your videos, the most important things are shown, like dynamic range, noise floor, frequency response, and those interface test results are very close to each other. If so, what is the factor that cause the different in term of sound quality, color, stereo image, depth, 3D, blah blah... That people usually talk about? Please don't consider this is an argument. I just want to understand more about your videos, and don't know if it's complete or not. And if it is, what cause the different in some aspects that I have mention above. Thank u ;)
@@LongCaoOfficial Hey, the main difference in sound quality between interfaces these days will be noise and distortion. When a preamp, or straight AD / DA is well designed it does not add any "color" to the sound and reproduces audio faithfully. Really enjoy your thorough Prut analysis and comparisons. Keep on publishing, these vids are gold.
And now please the new:
Audient iD14 MkII 😃
Please do! Your reviews are the best out there and I want to buy an iD14 MkII but not before your review....
Yyup the MK II series covering iD4 MKII as well and would be interesting to see how they compare against the MOTU M2 as well
Upvote MKII review please!
Why does he not reply 😩
Great review. Can you please make a review on id14 mk2 or id4 mk2? The new versions look better.
HUGE thanks for this review
been using this for about one year, great performance
the new id14 mk2 is now usb bus powered so is there gonna be any diference?. amazing video!
Thank you for doing this review Julian! A great help for sure as I've been eying up this interface for a while now. Would be great if you do a review on the Audient ID4 to compare, as it is completely bus-powered and has different AD/DA converters inside too! :)
Time to check out the new one... MkII ...
What an amazing video Julian, loved it!
Now I know why my ears like it so much.
Would love to see a review of the iD44!
Great review as always. Please do review the id4. Please.
Audient is at a loss to explain the problem and because it comes from the UK, the whole servicing methodology and time frame was too much of a pain to do (I'd have to buy an equal backup interface to keep working, and why do I want to do that?) that I continue to live with the issue.
try ssl2+ audio interface
Thanks for the greatly in depth review! Amazing as always! Watched it all the way even though I already have an audient and don't plan on buying another soon. Absolutely agree your take on the volume knob, I wish they'd have made it like the mic gain knob instead, which particularly also feel much nicer to use.
I always giggle when you switch to the Steinberg preamp noise.
thank you man i was waiting for this video for so long time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best reviewer on youtube!!
Subscribed! This was amazingly thorough.
Very very detailed and informative! It would be a blast if you could do such a video about Latency and also Real Life Performance Latency, such as testing how many plugins can you load on your PC with the specs shared of course.
Best regards and Danke schoen!
Great review! I bought it three days ago and was very impressed!
J. Krause certificated
Yes 😄😆😎👌👍🙏
Thank you so much for your reviews! We are waiting to see here iD14 MKII.
I just got the MKII!!!
@@JulianKrause Can't wait... When you open it please check the DACs. They are a big mystery so far.
@@JulianKrause when can we expect the review to be out?
@@JulianKrause wie läuft das review? bin gespannt :)
One thing I want to see also for future videos is Latency with VST Plugins before switching to higher buffer size. For live keyboard performances or FX. Interfaces behave differently with low buffer size.
i second that motion
Thanks for your great reviews Julian! I’d really like to know what you think of the Apogee Duet interface. Is it really worth the extra money? Keep on rockin’ ...
Thank to share an interesting technical review , very good
Hi. great video as always. I am a RME user, would be cool to have a video about some RME product
Please, please, compare the popular UA and Apogee gear to these less expensive interfaces! Amazing as always!
The big question is: Have you noticed any audible problem with your iD4? If not you can forget about the measurements and simply enjoy your music :)
Excelent Review! Thanks!! I wait for a Review of UAD solo
It's still a bummer that other double-input interfaces work just fine without one, while id14 needs it for some obscure reason, though...
same PREs design but not same spec...
@@DarkPa1adin
Audient representative maintained that the performance differences between 4 and 14 are for all intents and purposes negligible when I pestered them about it, so I'm sticking with their word on the matter.
@@Hugmir ua-cam.com/video/euNX_kbvDEc/v-deo.html
they sound the same, but if you want more gain capacity, that SAME DESIGN, isn't the same as SAME SPECS
@@DarkPa1adin
id4 always had plenty of gain for me and sounded ridiculously good after comparing it to Steinbergs, but okay, good to know that 14 has bit more of it. Still, to me the convenience of no additional power adapter counts.
The software seems to differ, though, and I forgot to mention that. I do seem to have way simpler menu on my 4.
Thanks for the video!
@@Hugmir the power adapter is only when you need phantom power (use condenser), otherwise it is ok without it
Like the review! The inability to meter on device is a deal breaker. Loved the tribute to J 2 @ 7.43, "cloudlifterhead." Haha.
I think it does meter on the device. See my comment.
@@FoodTechLife It actually only meters the system meter but if you have the Mic set up to the mains, it will effectively be a meter for the gain on the microphone...
The metering in the software mixer is quite good and can accomodate all 10 inputs...
Please do a full comparison table for the inputs and the main outputs (like the headphone outputs) please......!!!!
Doesn't matter if people don't understand the numbers the green to red colors are just gold..!!!
Review the ID44 please. I have one and want to know your thoughts
Can you please do a review on M Audio MK II. Your videos are of great help to us beginners.
Thank you.
What's your insight?
best reviews on audioterfaces on youtube. Thanks Julian!
ps. could you review the Tascam series i208 interface? looks really good for the price!
thanks Julian!!!! really helpful review.
Love your reviews - thank you!!!
Yeah but what about the id44?
The level indicator I believe is for direct monitoring and if i am not mistaken direct means that is directly coming from the input, through amplifier of course, and if the monitor peaks, so as the input.
This world needs more person like you. Cheers
Yes! The drivers have big problems! I have Audient ID22 and Win10 !!! I'm going to sell it!
Please make video on audient id4
Hi Julian! Great video! Which interface do you prefer between ID14 and SSL 2+? Thanks!
Very detailed information 👍👍👍
great review. subbed
The best interface audio
I got Schecter Omen Extreme 7 with stock pickups and with really really STRONG pick attack it can clip the DI input, on minimal gain knob of course. I've read some people with hot pickups have clipping problem, like one with EMG pickups and another with some Meshuggah signature 8 string pickups. So keep in mind that there can be problems with hot guitar pickups.
Thanks for detailed reviews.
Great video. Is the upgrade to MK2 worth?
Are all the measurements here valid also for the id44? Thanks in advance!
it would be awesome to see new Audient iD4 MKII
Thanks for the review :)
Hello Mister Julian. From all the interfaces you reviewed, looking back, which interface would you buy for long term use? Thanks.
The Audient line is always good, I wonder what they think about adding a DSP chip to this, it would be something.
Yes that would kick uad for good with just audient stock preamp also it would be such powerful gear it's already powerful
Hey!
I really enjoy your videos :) Thank you for them!
One small question - I have the Audient iD4 (I bought it a long time ago...)
I was wondering which headphones will be good to work with and I was looking at the DT 770 PRO 250 Ohm Beyerdynamic.
There is a version of 80 ohms and a version of 250 ohms.
Should I take the 250 ohms?
Will the Audient iD4 give a good performance with them or do you recommend a different set of headphones?
I will use them for recording and for audio cleaning (RX).
Thanks!
I believe every word you say Herr Krause.
Julian thanks for your great videos. Is the mkII audient id14 so much better?
Superb review.
Hi Julian, great content!
Regarding iD14 output impedance of 22,90 ohm. Are headphones with 63 ohms (sony mdr-7506) impedance still ok, or is the sound too distorted?
Thanks for your time and clarity in your videos!
Brilliant review! Are the any differences to the ID4 regarding the sound quality? (not the functionality)
Great podcasts, suggestion ,I wish you would test on the Audient ID 44
"SUBSCRIBE FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE REVIEWS" - hahaha! Good work! :)
Plz test audient id 4
Please make the review of the new id14 mkii please!! :D
Hey Julian, could you do a review of the AXR4.
I am curious what the Neve SILK red/blue colorisation and the 384khz recording capabilities
Hey man great video! Which would you recommend between the Motu M2/M4 and this audient iD14? Specifically for recording DI guitars and vocals (for the most part)
FINALLY! thank you so much!!@!!!!!
I'm really interested to see a review about one of the antelope audio interfaces.I have both antelope discrete and audient id14 interfaces.I like them both but I feel antelope is much better in every aspect in compare to the audient id14
Hello Julian. Thanks For The Great Reviews On Audio Interfaces. I Have A Question I'd Like You To Guide Me On, Between the ( Audient ID4, ID14 and the Motu M2/M4 ) Which has the best Converters for mixing music professionally? Which One Would You Recommend For A professional Mix Engineer?
I've watched lots of your reviews and love them. But I don't know why you don't include the AD and DA test, like loopback or something? thank u ;)
Hey, I'm not sure what you mean with AD / DA test? I tested all the in and outputs of the iD14. What's missing?
Things like "rythm" and "3D sound" are just marketing terms and are highly subjective descriptions of the audio.
Julian Krause This is exactly what i've thought for long time now. Thank you for your response. Have a nice day ;)
