  • How I basically manage my Honey supers throughout the year using nature over the winter to clean out excess pollen if they can and if they don’t I then scrape it off then pressure wash the frames and get them rebuilt.

    Great video, thanks! Looking forward to trying your “no pollen in the super” technique. Been looking for a solution to stop pollen from getting in my cut-comb. Thanks for sharing.

    Sir do, 👏 You are in the honey business and will have to make the adjustment that works best for you and the bees.
    When I had honey crystallizing in the frame and switched to 9" frames that problem was solved.
    At the end of it all production is the name of the game, do keep well and stay safe God bless 👋.

    Hi Richard, I have langstroth hives and find putting nine frames in my supers instead of the ten to fill the boxes the bees build out way more and fatter honey in the frames always a bigger crop and yes your definitely right comb instead of foundation is also a bonus.

      Hi Mark yes the problem is a lot of people who only have two or three Hives are more than happy to have what they get and I agree with that but when you start getting more down the road of trying to get a little bit more from your colonies when you into the 15/20 Hives and More, it really is important and it’s it makes a massive difference to Honey production I’m sure of it. Best of luck for the summer season

    If you have fewer frames in the supers than in the brood box, does this not make it harder for the bees to dry off the honey ?
    I'm thinking of how they push air currents around the hive...

    Can you explain how you get more honey only having 8 frames or 9 frame vs 10 frames? I get when you are running through an uncapping machine it makes less work with 9 frames. Thx!

    • @richardnoel3141
      @richardnoel3141  2 роки тому

      Hi David, you don’t necessarily have more honey, that’s down to other things, ( like weather and flowers) however the bees have more wax cells to fill less frames in the way so you have the maximum frames they we can easily remove afterwards, (without cross combs etc.)The skill is getting it pre built so when the flow starts the bees can fill it quickly and build huge combs that hold more honey and have two less frames in. I find and so do other beekeepers that you get less crystallisation, the less frames you have per box. Building new foundation or building on new frames is very costly in terms of honey, but much mess so once your combs are build out on 8, 9, or 10 configuration.

      @@richardnoel3141 Thank you for the excellent explanation Mr. Noel! I know my Dad usually ran 9 frames in honey supers in his commercial operation. As a kid I never gave it much thought, lol. As a hobby keep I do everything pretty manual and I've never had issues with crystallization here in Colorado.

    Hi Richard, love the videos, any recommendations for getting pollen out if you are from wax foundation without destroying it? Are the spacers worth the cost and all the effort? As apposed to just doing it with your eye when changing from 10s to 8s or 9s

    • @richardnoel3141
      @richardnoel3141  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Craxy Kiwi, you can actually buy a hand spacer ( I think Kamen Reynolds featured in his last video about went to add a super) that you put on top of the frames and give you the exact distance needed if you have rails rather than cancellations. So there is different methods but a lot of people just go for nines and it’s the middle range so I only show the question and try and explain because it’s the way of absolutely maximising everything but you just have to know how to do it and how to work at it if you have all your frames space with nine per box that’s absolutely fine there’s no problem and you’ll probably do really well with that. Best of luck

    • @kaistumer198
      @kaistumer198 2 роки тому +1

      y hand spacing is possible, in fact L. Langstroth did it that way, but it is time consuming, uneven and spacing easly disturbed by movement

    Hiya what do you recommend when your frames aren’t plastic, scrape carefully lol or just change foundation. Learn something every vid you make. Thanks

    • @richardnoel3141
      @richardnoel3141  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Emma you have a few options to carefully scrape them out and often they will rebuild if you remove just the pollen. This is what I’m trying to explain is it’s about getting the balance between foundation and plastic foundation with our supers we don’t need to spend the money on renewing the foundation it’s a little bit quicker and a little bit less time consuming if you’re doing it on a big scale to hard plastic foundation we think other people like to use wood and foundation made by the Bees that’s a choice but I personally think that after a while the foundation drawn by the bees on wooden frames does get a bit misshapen after a while. There is very little advantage in the 2 to be honest for us also the plastic frames are much lighter and much more durable. I would certainly say that you can scrape out a lot of pollen from your wax foundation if you’re very careful because for us we can’t get any lower to remove that residual propolis and dry pollen because the plastic is premolded ( that’s why we pressure wash it)where is with foundation you can actually get lower to the bottom of the cell, so there is some advantages and some disadvantages

    • @richardnoel3141

      We scrape them out or put them back on the hives in the dearth period to feed the bees before the summer nectar flow starts.
      Some years we get a bit, some years not so much like this year. Luckily. However supers put back on the hives rarely have any spring honey in them the following spring!
