  • Brisbane's Victoria Bridge has a fascinating history, spanning over 150 years. It's not just a bridge, it's a testament to the city's growth and development.
The story begins in the 1860s with a temporary wooden bridge meant to aid construction of a permanent one. This first bridge actually collapsed due to marine borers!
The first permanent bridge arrived in 1874, named Victoria Bridge after Queen Victoria. This bridge was made of wood with iron features and even had tolls for a few years. Unfortunately, it wasn't strong enough to withstand Brisbane's severe floods and was destroyed in 1893.
Brisbane wasted no time and built a new, sturdier Victoria Bridge in 1897 from steel and wrought iron. This bridge served the city for over 70 years, but by the 1960s, traffic demands had grown tremendously.
The current Victoria Bridge, the third iteration, opened in 1969. This modern concrete bridge is a familiar sight today, carrying vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists across the Brisbane River.
