    That was when my kitty cat walked up to my house! He was a little kitten that someone had put out of a car in front of my house. He came up to me, he purred, and he conquered my love! He's my best little pal now 5 years later.

    Making a radio in the style of approximately 1906! Most radios back then were crystal radios using the galena crystal for detectors. The crystal was very difficult to adjust and would go out of adjustment at the slightest vibration. The fleming diode replaced the crystal and would not go out of adjustment at all.

      Ugg... Cat whisker detectors are a royal pain in the asymmetrical conduction.

    I watched all 7 videos. I have no clue what you just made, but it was a pleasure watching an artist work. Two thumbs up!

    The surface area of the getter is what absorbs the residual gas in the tube. The greater the surface area the more gas that can be absorbed, thus spraying the getter material onto the inside surface of the tube gives a much larger surface than the very small getter ring itself.

    Glad to see Ron make these tubes. It is amazing how Fleming was able to preform this feat. My uncle W. T. Freeland used to correspond with him several years ago.

    The individual skill required for each task you perform is truly amazing… welding, glass blowing, machining, design, electronic knowledge, etc… impressive.

      Scary stuff! Got to keep your wits about you every second! So far in my 50 years no cut fingers! I do use sticks in cases where I can't safely use fingers.

    Bravo! Almost a lost art. Great to watch someone actually teaching others how to do it. Beyond my machining capability, but not my understanding.
    Thank you very much!

    Pretty much awesome that you share so well, and with ease, your skills and knowledge.
    I won't be building my own fleming diode anytime soon..... (unless of course you will me all your weapons of construction:-), but I will make use of a few of your techniques you seem to come by easily.
    Thanks for sharing.
    And I have no idea what this means.

    Wow, that is good to know. Is that it's only use, or can it be used for something else, like in a tube amplifire? the reason I'm asking is because here in about a year, my best friend, my wife, and I will be making loads of production equipment for making music, and I'd love to use a few of these in one of those. I love the design and all as well! Also is there a way to make the filiment glow blue or violet?

    First, this is totally amazing. I do have a question. You have modern equipment and access to things such as Pyrex glass. Could you speculate about how Fleming managed to do this in 1904?

    This was basically a light bulb with an anode plate so you could say it was an LED.
    The effect was known about back in 1880 when Edison was investigating blackening of his light bulbs by making experimental bulbs with an extra electrode but the diode current was so tiny it wasn't much use for anything back then. In 1904 Fleming invented the thermionic diode where its low current capability had an application as a radio detector.

    • @glasslinger
      @glasslinger  4 роки тому +2

      Yes. I have made carbon filament replicas of the Edison lamps for people. The LED observation is cute! So Edison actually was the true inventor of the LED! He, he, he!

    I'd like to see that tube used in a radio receiver as Fleming intended. Well, actually not quite as he intended....use headphones instead of a meter!

    13:28 That's beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Ron.
    How does it perform as a replacement for a cat-whisker crystal set's cat-whisker detector?

    • @TerryMcKean
      @TerryMcKean 5 років тому

      Cool to see your homebrew tube tester up close, too.
      Do you have video up showing it's construction and stuff like that?

    • @glasslinger
      @glasslinger  5 років тому +1

      It electrically works the same. But there is no critical adjustment needed to get the best sensitivity.

    • @TerryMcKean
      @TerryMcKean 5 років тому

      Right on... definitely nice work... and understood about finding that sweet spot on the galena. :-)
      That got me to thinking about some crystal sets that I read about somewhere that had a little battery-powered buzzer included in them to help find that spot by generating DC-to-light bandwidth RF noise in the headphones, and one would touch the point of the cat-whisker wire to different spots on the face of the galena until max buzzer-noise was heard in the 'phones, then the set would be ready to tune around the bands. :-)
