RetroBlasting and igrewupstarwars.com take a look back at the 1979 classic TV series, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray!

I was at a convention around 2000 where Erin was a guest. My friend and I passed by the table and walked a little ways away. A few moments later we started talking about her, and he says something along the lines 'Yeah, she's still hot. I'd do her in a heartbeat." and a few other comments. Unbeknownest to him she had left the table to talk to someone directly behind him. I got to see the whole thing. When we walked away I had him turn around to see she'd been behind him the whole time. He was embarrased, but stood by his commentary.
Besides, I'm sure she's overheard the same thing at plenty of conventions before since she does still have it. :)
LOL thats hilarious.
She was probably both flattered and disgusted at the same time :3 Or maybe she's totally over it.
@@Terrathrax I can SOOO picture something like happening to me! XD
She aged very well.
Not the worst thing to overhear about yourself, I guess. XD
I would like to see RetroBlasting do a series on UFO and space 1999.
Hello. Both series are here on UA-cam, and all full seasons, in original audio. Just look for them, and you'll find them. Greetings from Chile.

As far as Hawk joining the Crew of the Searcher, he'd told Buck that his village of Bird people was only a small fraction of the remaining members of his species and that by joining the Searcher Crew, his mission would become the same as theirs, finding the remaining members of their own people
Between Erin Grey and Lynda Carter they tagteamed my puberty.
I always thought Wilma Dearing and Elyse Keaton were so beautiful.
You got it right with Lynda Carter but I always liked the Draconian Princess Dalla better than Erin Grey. Even as a kid I knew she was DTF.
@@CRAZYHORSE19682003 Dude, the curvy cruel Princess Dalla with her outfits threw me headlong into puberty, and Erin Grey kept me there. Erin Grey is classic hotness...but Princess Dalla get's forgotten, she launched a generation of pubescent boners...what a time to live in, all that AND SciFi too!?
awsome
I ruined my carpet during puberty thinking about Erin Grey in that tight blue jumpsuit with the plunging zipper being pulled down by princess ardalla, and in the vampire episodes when Erin Said "...I drained them, and it felt soooo goood!" I almost ruined my tighty whiteys
THAT'S the reason for the radical reformatting of season 2??!?? Would have never guessed. I always thought it was some desperate attempt to save the show. And...to think...had that jarring change not happened, there might have even been a third and fourth season. Maybe even revival attempts.
There have been rumors of a Movie reboot for years.
@@AlbertoMartinez765 Reboot movies/series are always very hit-or-miss, lol. Basically just "expensive fan films" ... which typically don't involve actual "fans" of the show.
When I was a kid this was my “must see tv”.....wow never noticed Twinkies head either
I never noticed it either. Now I'm wishing they hadn't pointed it out. - Once it is seen it cannot be unseen.
Just remember, if all you think of is sex everything looks like a sex organ... (drools on self 🤫)
To me Twiki's head just resembled Darth Vaders helmet.
I didn't notice when I saw the show as a kid. Loved his voice s1; good god, s2's voice was just awful.
I just got a mental image of someone polishing Twiki.
It's too bad that they couldn't design uniforms as good as the ones on Battlestar.
Those jackets still look awesome.
Thank you so much, I never noticed the shape of Twiki's head until you pointed it out, now I can't unsee it.
Any while I do agree that I like the look of the Starfighter from Buck Rogers, the Viper got immortalized by being the inspiration for the Air Forces unofficial nick name for the F-16, because of BGC.
I don't care how hot she says those lights were there is no way they are as hot as Erin herself.
I would think the lights were getting burnt by her hottness.
I wish you could keep making vids like this. I have learned over time that we share a lot of the same views on toys from our childhood. But there are only so many of them.
Another point to the importance and popularity of Buck Rogers is the fact that Gottlieb released a Buck Rogers Pinball long before Star Wars saw its theme in pinball.
Buck Rogers and Battlestar were my favourite shows as a kid. Solo, Rogers and Starbuck were great role models to have as a kid 😉 Made me the scoundrel I am today. I've tried to blank Buck Rogers season 2 and Battlestar Galactica 1980 from my memory. What they should have done was merge the two shows, and called it Battlestar Galactica in the 25th Century. I reckon it could of worked.
I actually considered such a crossover once in a fan fic story idea; the Galactica finally making it to Earth and running into Buck Rogers and the Earth Directorate.
With the Cylons hot on their trail the two sides together with the Draconians (revealed to be a human offshoot despite claiming not so) have to work together to prevent being completely exterminated by the full might of the Cylon armada.
Thats a brilliant idea, being a kid back then and the way things were, that wouldve worked. Probably would've been bigger than who shot JR? I like the role model comment too. Only role models kids have nowadays is that Sheldon guy.... For gawd sakes the even sensored Wille E Coyotee from hitting the ground.
For me, the best thing about shows like Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica is that the action figures were the same size and had a similar look to the Star Wars figures and could be used to fill in the holes in the Kenner line, especially because there were no early SW figures for much-needed characters like Rebel troopers, the Rebel leaders, Tarkin, Wedge, Biggs, etc.
I always had Han and Chewie in the Falcon, Luke in the X-wing and Lando in the Starfighter from Buck Rogers.
What a cool design that Starfighter was.
@@ShinAdamSmasher That was an awesome idea. I had the Starfighter too but I used it as just another Rebel ship. I remember that my Huer figure stood in for Tarkin and Killer Kane was Valance (a character from the Marvel comics). Buck and Wilma were still Buck and Wilma but they were other members of the Rebellion. I used nearly all the 3.75 figure lines of the era to fill in the gaps in the Kenner Star Wars collection, whether it was with movie characters or characters from the Marvel series. For instance, Adama from Battlestar Galactica was my General Dodonna and Starbuck was Wedge. The Black Hole figures also came in especially handy.
Buck and Wilma were part of my Rebel Alliance as well. Until the rubber bands that held the torso connected to the legs broke on them.
@@ShinAdamSmasher Yeah, all those Mego 3.75 figures were damn fragile - the bands, torsos, thumbs, arms, etc.
@@jameskennedy4377 My G.I. Joe figures had the same problem. I tried several times to fix my Major Bludd by replacing his broken rubber band, but I could never get the tweezers to hook the new rubber band up inside his torso just right. :-/
(My brother and I never had any Buck Rogers toys when we were kids, but we _did_ have Star Wars and G.I. Joe (the 3.75" action figures, of course). Naturally, the Joes joined the Rebel Alliance and Cobra joined the Galactic Empire. Cobra Commander was Darth Vader's backstabbing second-in-command (like Starscream to Vader's Megatron), Chewbacca got to drive the MOBAT tank more than once, and Han Solo picked Scarlet up as a girlfriend at some point. Luke got hitched with Leia because the movies hadn't told us that they were siblings yet. My brother and I never bothered to come up with a reason _why_ G.I. Joe and Star Wars ended up in the same universe in the first place.)
The first 2 hour episode was actually in the movies. Gotta love having a cool nerd dad back in the days of sci fi disco.
If nobody told me about Twiki's helmet shape I would still see him with my innocent child eyes.
I got the chance to meet both Gil Gerard & Erin Gray at the San Diego Comic Con in 2009. They were working a table together selling selfies for charity. My buddy paid it & I got to take the picture of the three of them. They couldn’t have been nicer. Ms. Gray was just stunningly beautiful at 59.
It was actually half way ( or maybe last 4 - 6 eps) through the first season where things went wrong (for me). Wilma was always at headquarters, never in the action, and it was the Buck and Twiki road show (with the exception of the two part season finale), no more characters like Major Landers, Major Danton & Commander Royko.
Season 2 had some good elements, ( I like the ep when Buck turned into the Satyr, and the ep Buck was sick and saw lizard people) but yeah, over all a bad copy of Battlestar.
Hawk was awesome, but really designated to "Side Kick" status, always following Bucks lead, in fact, despite Admiral Asimov (why was an Admiral commanding one ship, and not a combat ship either.)and Colonel Deering's superior ranks, it was Captain Rogers in charge. Twiki's voice change will always be criminal, adding the narcissistic android Crichton to be C3PO to Twiki's R2D2, and the stupid outfits, which Erin Gray looked amazing in, just bad idea's one after the other.
The Studio Execs really know how to ruin good shows.
As a teen girl, I was the odd one who loved sci fi, it was considered a "guy" thing. I loved Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers. Then, they turned stupid. I thought that I was being harsh, now to find out, I wasn't the only one who thought so. :)
Just found you. and subscribed. 👍. CLIFF HANGER?! Where is Part 2 😱?! I feel like we were friends back in 1980 in how you experienced BR. Same opinions of the show experienced with my family only we had no Internet or other friends to talk about it. I met Gil Gerard once. Nice guy. On a personal note, my parents divorced in 1980 and my brother and I went through much severe emotional issues then along with moving around the country and changing schools every year. Buck Rogers at that time seemed to be the one true escape for us (brother and Mom) to watch TOGETHER each week as the characters seemed like a warm family that we had lost. It seems sappy....but this show will always retain an intense special place in my formative childhood. Thanks for the care in making this retrospective. P.S. The older I became, the more I learned to ‘appreciate’ Princess Ardalla 😉👍
Hahaha - Princess Ardalla was a very unique villain - in that she was attracted to the hero Buck. She was their Catwoman and Buck was Batman. I still remember when she tried to force Buck to marry her under terrorist threat (or something like that). 2 other officers offered to marry her instead, but she would accept no substitutes.
perfectsplit I personally love their strategic yet seductive dance they shared in the pilot. Also loved the accompanying catchy late 70’s analog ‘futuristic’ synth tune. “Remember the Trojan Horse” 😎 - said to Twiggy and Theo
Loved this! Really brings back memories for a kid from the 80s. You were absolutely right about us hungry for space science fiction shows after Star Wars. I would watch any space themed show on TV. Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers tops the list.
Great episode, I remember catching reruns of this show on the "Sci-Fi Channel" (now currently the "SyFy Channel"). I don't think I've really sat through a whole episode, but I do recall it looking like a cool sci-fi show. Interesting to learn how the show started with campy pulp sic-fi tone with the first season and went down with its second season, going with essentially ripping off "Star Trek" in some ways. Gotta give props to your friend Tom Berges for being both honest and funny in this video. Will be looking forward to "Part 2".
remember seeing the movie version at the local drive-in theater with my family, good times. I still love the opening credits and song. Thanks for the great video, sir.
Buck Rogers was my favorite only because it was the only game in town other than Star Trek and Space: 1999 reruns.
The adventures seem to take place in a discotheque dance floor. 😂
I miss Buck Rogers and especially Erin Gray. *sigh*
There hasn't been a tv show that bested Buck Rogers for the pairing of stunning Erin Grey and gorgeous Pamela Hensley. Ahhh, to be schoolboy age all over again watching these two beauties across the screen. I saw women in a much better light thanks to these two.
Interesting point of the Space Vampire episode was that the creature was found on an abandoned freighter called Demeter. The Demeter was the ship that Dracula used to cross to London from Transylvania.
Nobody noticed it, but Twiki had the first positronic brain long before Data made such a big deal about his positronic brain on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Great review, you nailed it, I'm a huge fan of Buck Rogers (still watch it to this day) and you speak truth, can't wait for part 2
Erin is awesome. She even did the voice for an AI in my film HUNTER PREY. Always had a huge crush on her in the show... she was a pleasure to work with and anyone who hasn't seen HUNTER PREY-- check it out. It's very late 70's-- early 80's sci-fi.
I remember this show, and I liked it, back when it was new. I was a kid, and it was in the aftermath of Star Wars. But two things were wrong with it. First was the "will they or won't they?" dynamic between Buck and Wilma. Back then, the answer was: they won't. Period. Partly, it was because the producers of the show understood that the chase is the most interesting part of a romance. And that's true, but interest won't last past a certain point -- audiences understand that if there is ANY chemistry between the stars, and ANY possibility at all that the characters will, then it will have to happen by a certain (not too long delayed) point. Past that, it just won't play. Past that, then audiences will say: if they were going to get together, then they'd get together. Well, like most shows of this era, the producers weren't brave enough to move the relationship to the next point. They wanted to keep things endlessly in limbo. But audiences won't accept that forever, so any interest in whether or not Buck and Wilma would consummate their mutual attraction faded. The second problem was that this sci fi series wasn't really science fiction. Truly it wasn't. Even as a kid, I recognized that there were almost no episodes, from the entire two-year run of the series, that couldn't, with minor rewrites, have been reset as simple, non-science fiction action/adventures episodes, and set right down in a 20th century earth setting.
This second issue is the truly great flaw. The strongest appeal of the science fiction genre is it's ability to imagine truly stories involving otherworldly scenarios that couldn't be imagined in any other setting, and make them plausible. In the best cases, this can be used to tell truly thought-provoking stories that make people think about events and ideas from the real world around them, and then lead people to reevaluate their preconceptions. "The Twilight Zone" and "Star Trek" did this well, but this series never even really tried to do this -- it told simplistic adventure stories that, with few exceptions, could have been told in a contemporary setting. It just wasn't a very daring or imaginative series. In the second season, it also became VERY pale copy of "Star Trek" in its format, which made thing even worse.
Well, I agree with many of your points, but I think the Buck and Wilma "will they or won't they" also was part of the formula... And, for dramatic reasons, "they won't" is sort of a necessity. After all, if Buck and Wilma were "an item" then Buck couldn't make out with the guest babe of the week without "looking like a heel for cheating on Wilma". It's about like James Bond getting married-- OF COURSE it has to end tragically, otherwise Bond can't be Bond...
I don't think that something has to be "deep science fiction" to be sci-fi. Yeah a lot of the stories were "adventure stories" and not meant to be the deeper philosophical "morality play" type sci-fi stories that Star Trek and other series like those you mentioned tried to tell or grapple with. I don't think *all* sci-fi HAS to be the kind of "deep sci-fi" you described, either. Course that's a point of personal taste and definition I suppose. Some folks don't consider Star Trek to *truly* be sci-fi beyond perhaps a few of the "deepest" episodes...
Later! OL J R :)
What most people think of as Science Fiction is really Space Fantasy. Very few sci-fi series or movies out there. I've learned not to take it too hard when spaceships seem to have the speed of sailing ships in relation to one another or asteroids have the same gravity as a planet. It still takes me right out of the mood, I just roll my eyes and pretend it didn't happen.
Every time Buck would go after one of those lovey guest stars I would tell him he's crazy!! Go get Wilma, she's perfect!!!
My Dad once met Buster Crabbe when he was a kid.
Crabbe belonged to the same Yacht Club as my Grandparents, I believe it was the one in White Plains, NY.
My grandparents had taken my Dad and my Uncle to the yacht club one weekend and they were on a boat ride when my grandmother introduced Crabbe to my dad.
This was in the 60’s when my dad was still a boy.
I liked both BSG & Buck Rogers so much I bought the Revelle Models which took about 3 minutes to assemble. I also painted the engines & blaster ports with blacklight paint so they glowed under blacklight unfortunately I lost them somewhere along with my penchant for blacklighting.
What was interesting was that the end of the first episode had Buck Rogers being sad and depressed because he was out of his time and had lost everyone and everything from his prior life. Quite an interesting point for an action series.
When Buck and Duke fought was classic my husband and I laughed so hard!😂😂😂
I've never seen this channel before, but you got a thumbs-up and a subscribe from me before the intro even started.
Loved the show, didn't expect the tv budget to match other stuff. BSG, Flash Gordon, Star Wars, Ice Pirates...etc... all good fun
Thanks for the recap. I remember watching the movie in theaters. Good times.
I loved that show as a kid but old chicago gave me nightmares as a kid. Also the episode with Jamie lee Curtis and the robot guard that followed them. I hid behind my pillow when it fought the sand monster. Awesome review.
I can see the Mandela Effect changing the 80's TV landscape by having Hawk randomly appear in various shows for no apparent reason...he could hang out for an episode or two before disappearing...only to resurface on another show all the sudden. Like he could be in an "A-Team" one week and then "Hill Street Blues" the next. He could even be the one who shot J.R. Ewing. Then he could baby-sit Punky Brewster...assassinate Michael Knight, etc.
Actually, what the original producers as well as Glen Larson were looking for in a sci-fi series was a more serious approach, and to mimick the overall Star Wars type theme. But thanks to Gil Gerard's campy sense of humor and a somewhat lighter tone of approach from Gil and things just kind of turned out to be a man out of old Earth's past who came forward into the future with a slightly more "light-hearted" look at a possible future for humanity in the 25th century. But I get the feeling that's what made the series so popular with fans over the first season of the TV series. When Gil threw in his "campy" sense of humor, his witty one-liners and quips and jokes, kind of brought the whole series together. That and it brought things around for Erin Gray who'd also taken a more serious approach to shooting a sci-fi themed type show. She soon learned that acting didn't have to be such a serious matter and she and Gil hit it off almost immediately. Because of Gil, Erin soon learned to "lighten up" a little.
My new favorite channel!
I TOTALLY agree with your assessment of how jarring the change was with the Twiki Voice! Mel Blanc's deeper voice added an element of seriousness to the character while the "other guy" just sounded silly. The Twiki thing really bothered me back then and took away from my enjoyment of the show. I also agree with your assessment that the "Hawk" character was pretty cool, but the whole premise of the 2nd Season was a waste. I was in Grade School during the time of the series and I remember thoroughly enjoying the First Season and the first episode of the 2nd Season and then that was it. Sad that they ruined an otherwise awesome series.
Not sure "seriousness of character" is an apt description of Twiki's voice, lol. Biddy biddy biddy (insert lame/droll one-liner) biddy biddy biddy!
P: LOL! I dunno. Gravitas, maybe? Mel Blanc simply Ruled. Sigh. I really liked that Show....1st Season.
Twiki 2.0 did sound more like "ShamWow Guy" or some other in-your-face-infomercial-salesman to me ... so yeah, anything else is gravitas in comparison, haha.
all i gotta say is damn Erin Grey is hot AF
damn....I luv'ed Battlestar Galactica & Buck Rogers!...Great vid' & great info' that I had NO clue about!....And it sure did seem as a child that both shows lasted much longer!....I am saddened that they didn't!....
Thanks, now I can’t unsee Twinkie’s phallic dome since you brought it up. Never crossed me mind as a kid seeing it on TV, but now, due to them interwebz, I’m scarred
I used to love Buck Rogers. Before had the term, I had thought with Hawk and being on The Searcher was jumping the shark. And I didn't realize it was only two years. Seemed longer to me... and Hawk would have been season 3 or 4 or something.... Never knew Mel Blanc was the original Twiki. And thanks for the comment about Twiki's head shape. Never thought of it before.
Holy crap! All these years and how did I not know about Buster Crabbe!?
Loved both BR and BSG. Was always sad they shifted gears between seasons. The only redeeming thing was Hawk.
You're right...I can't UNSEE that!
James Crawley made a pilot of Buck Rogers with Gil and Erin as Bucks parents on the post war mid West farm. The trailers on UA-cam somewhere.
Gil Gerard really pulled off that dance scene. 'Twas hilarious! The original theme song had fine lyrics, but was sung so Wimpily!!
Erin Gray... man, she was hot back in the day. As a child I remember thinking she was very pretty. Haven't thought about her in ages. I was in 3rd grade at the time the show was on. Looking back at the footage of her then with a grown man's eyes and mind now is kind of a surreal experience. Just looked up current pictures of her. She's aged a lot, but I remember her fondly.
Wait, was that a young Dennis Haysbert? "You're in Good Hands."
Yes. He was in "A Dream of Jennifer" in the first season and had a recurring role as a Searcher crewman in the second.
Yep, he also was a viper pilot, in "Galactica 1980". Another GL production, that got totally FRAKKED, by "the suits" at ABC & Universal.
@@WalterDWormack214 That's right. He was part of "Daggit Squadron" in Space Croppers.
Had the same reaction. "Is that Dennis Haysbert?" I think that's my favorite thing to do when watching old shows. Seeing actors when they were young an unknown.
I loved this show as a kid.
for sure on the level of beauty Buck Rogers win competition with I think almost everyone on SF show from Star Wars to BSG ;-))
I totally agree with your assessment of the series. Hawk was a menacing, then endearing character. The second season premiere episode was good, but the changes they made were all bad. Manley ruined Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. I was always disappointed by the budgetary confinement. Interior sets always looked like a big soundstage with no walls. Too bad it was shot on the cheap.
Dude, Erin Grey was crazy hot!
Oh, my favorite episodes of Buck Rogers are always Planet of The Slave Girls, The Plot To Kill A City, Return of The Fighting 69th, Space Vampire, and anything with Princess Ardala, including Awakening, Escape From Wedded Bliss, Ardala Returns, and Flight of The War Witch. Erin Grey and Pamela Hensley had insane chemistry with Gil Gerard, and were also insanely hot. I hated the fact that the show always tried to pair Buck with some bimbo-of-the-week instead of developing his relationship with Wilma and the tension with Ardala.
I loved Hawk as a kid. I remember the show having a darker tone in the Hawk season. If nothing else Hawk gave us "bird person" in Rick and Morty
I sure hope a movie version will go into production some day it's perfect timing with the upcoming production of Star Wars 9 and the new Avatar films.
This video hasnt aged well: The Buck Rogers uniforms are now futuristic.
_"This video hasn't aged well?"_ What are you talking about? Are you trying to claim that they went back and changed the uniforms in the 1979 series to look futuristic and therefore this review has not aged well? Your comment doesn't make sense.
@@retroblasting lots of things don't make sense.
@@retroblasting btw great video.
Rainbow stripes and yoga pants, welcome to the future. I never made the association regarding Tweeki's head until now thanks for confirming the sickness of the world. Of course I did reach majority before I understood the Heinlein quote, "they look like orchids."
I've noticed something while watching Battle Star one day. a special effect was used on Buck Roger and Battle Star
I was pretty young back when these came out but I remember them very, very well. I was a rabid fan of this and Star Wars. And yes, Wilma had the same effect on me as slave Leia... I even remember thinking that season 2 was garbage... being all of 6 or 7 years old, even then, I knew.
A couple of years ago, I ended up finding the boxset of Buck Rogers. Within a couple of weeks, I watched the movie and then the entire Season 1. I have yet to watch Season 2!
Erin Gray. Growing up in the 70s/80s, she was the first person to spark my interest in the opposite sex.
I watched Buck as a kid when it was a fresh series... not until November 14th, 2018 when I watched this video did the thought of Twiki's head being shaped like... ummm... did that thought ever enter my mind... thanks RetroBlasting... for Retro-Ruining my childhood... now I can't unthink that.
this and the Fall Guy were my favorite shows as a kid
Futurama didn't have a problem having New New York in the series.
It seems weird that it only got 1 1/2 seasons, but was still syndicated (this and the Bill Bixby Hulk are my favorite shows from my childhood). I think one major difference between Buck Rogers and Battlestar, is that Battlestar seemed a little more mature/serious, appealing to older teens or young adults who weren't likely to (ask mom to) buy toys, IMO.
I fully agree. Season two was horrible. Right up there with Battlestar Galactica 1980.
Tihs was an interesting watch as I was/am a fan of the show (more specifically season 1) the relationships of the cast, the GORGEOUS Starfighter ships, LOVED IT! actually had no idea Glen Larsen left the show at this point. My personal favourite episode was the two part 'The Plot to Kill A City' guest starring Frank Gorshin as 'Kellogg'. I tried watching season 2, but couldn't get into it (and hated the way Wilma was suddenly a l'il sailor girl) and Twiki's voice was like WTF.
Speaking of Twiki, I MUST undo what has been eluded to, his head shape in my mind is a child's basin haircut, and that's it!
Now I can’t unsee it
I grew up watching this series. I was hardcore into this show and Battlestar Galactica, as well as reruns of Space:1999, and I've noticed a bothersome trend with all three: the second seasons of each show were terrible. I guess it could be argued that Galactica: 1980 isn't technically BSG Season 2, but that's how I see it. On each show, significant changes were made that either threw out interesting characters and ideas altogether or added things that just didn't belong. Buck Rogers ditched Dr. Huer and Dr. Theopolis and sent Buck and Wilma on board the Enterpri- I mean, the Searcher and added a moody and mysterious alien character. Galactica: 1980 ditched Apollo and Starbuck and much of the other familiar cast members save for Lorne Greene, arrived at Earth and introduced flying motorcycles. Space: 1999 switched from Main Mission to Command Centre, ditched Barry Gray's amazing music for a considerably more 70's score, sent Professor Bergman and Paul Morrow packing and introduced Maya. In all three instances, the qualities that made each show endearing were lost in favor of "let's make this more like THAT!" Each of those shows' second seasons had a couple of good episodes, but most were just horrific.
Thanks for the ride down memory lane guys!! Erin Grey Hot! Pamela Hensley Hotter! 2nd season was horrible but I did like the two parter with Mark Leonard ( Spock’s Father in Original Trek). Thanks again guys!
Awesome review of a show I've always loved! Subbed!
@19:27: The Galactica Shuttle. Anyone else notice this re-dressed model??? Also @20:12 : my friend, Mark Leonard ( played Sarrak in Star Trek ). Now there is a reference put in on purpose. He even played a similar role as an ambassador.
Used to love this show as a kid. HAHAHA
Nostalgia for this show has been ruined by Tweeki's...umm..yeah.
When I compare this to another classic 1970s scifi TV series , Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's ''Space: 1999'', about the same thing happened. The first season was great, the second season was... well not so great. I had to wait til the age of the internet before I got explanations of why the format of the second season was changed. It was still pretty good but not as good as the first season. And also no final end to the series.
Twiki's "head" shape and height must of lead to quite a few on set jokes whenever he rounded a corner and bumped into an actress like Erin Grey.
Those days Twiki seemed to be several inches taller.
I remember when this series was aired on South African tv !!!
14:07 Rest In Peace Markie Post (1950-2021)
WHY didn't I find this channel sooner??
Princess Ardala had a big role in my adolescent fantasies.
That weird robot always made me laugh.
Costumes appear to be inspired by Pierre Cardin's "spacy" designs from around 1970. Look it up, here on UA-cam!
I love the show I did a podcast about it on my podcast but you guys did great do your stuff about the toys was interesting too
I grew up watching Buck Rogers. I also have it on DvD. I'm a big fan.
I had read the original Buck Rogers novel (written in the 1920s!) and fallen in love with it before this show hit the air, and so I was a bit let down that the the show had hardly anything in common with the original story. Plus even at 14 I thought all the disco dancing 500 years in the future was hokey as hell. It seemed like every week they tried to come up with a disco dance that was stupider looking than the last week's, and pretty much they succeeded. And then there was the episode where Twiki met up a with a female Twiki who's catchphrase was "booty booty booty." Cheesy is one thing, but BRIT25C was a hot tub full of Velveeta.
But if it had spaceships in it I was watching it, disco or not. And while I don't remember Princess Ardala's costumes canonically having brain-melting powers, that was certainly the effect they had on me at the time.
As for Twiki's head, come on. He's clearly a bit of a Vader helmet ripoff with a dash of Galactica helmet thrown in for good measure. If you want to point the phallus at helmet designs, there are plenty of targets in 70s sci-fi other than good ol' Twiki.
11:05 Aw, if this was the case, they missed out a big opportunity to name it "Newer York"
I didn't pick up on that until this video. 😲
Using the opening movie sequence visuals to scrub my mind.
I was in my mid-teens when this first came out and having Erin Grey in skin-tight lycra might have helped a little, she was a stunning looking woman and many a schoolboy had a crush (yes, including me).
Wow. I watched the show in 79 and didn't realize tweaky's head looked like a rooster. Just damn. You people have dirty minds.
Vaders helmet is A dick tip as well. After all, they were written by the same ghostwriter.
Just read Harry Potter like Beavis and Butthead would and you will realize that J.K. Rowling is just an actress playing the part of writer.
17:58 that was so funny. "if you look past the lost of the entire premise of the show " , put that in your list of extremely patient and fair views. I dont remember the robot talking i must have only saw season 1.
Haha Buck Rogers was boss! It had a great theme tune as did Space 1999 have a great theme tune. Bring back Buck! And the princess haha
Birdperson from Rick & Morty finally explained with Hawk.
I was never into Buck Rogers. Battlestar Galactica was much better and had space battles every episode. Chips and Dukes of Hazzard were much more fun to watch than Buck Rogers.
They actually did mention New York. It was referred to as New Manhattan.
Wilma / Ardala Ardala / Wilma. Hmmmm. Loved this show as a 9 year old. I wish I had that poster. DAMN look at Markie Post in that red outfit! Space Vampire is my favorite too. Damn dude freaked me out. Only able to be seen by the victim. UGH. I was scared about that for a year. And Flight of the Warwitch hahaha. I even named one of my online MMO characters Warwitch because of that ep.
Hey season 2 had it good points...Hawk....the ep where Buck became a Satyr. Fun stuff. But ya 1 rocked it hard.
Oh hell a headless MArk Leonard.
I think that STTNG first season uniform pants were also stirrup pants and that was in the early 80's!
