I prefer it that way, honestly. That way, he's being added by modders instead, so there's more versions of him, including quite a few really good ones.
Although I guess full custom movesets for Ultimate weren't a thing yet when the video got released.

To be fair, he's been an assist trophy for a while, and I'm not sure if there's a character that officially went from Assist Trophy to playable, ever. Spirits (Pyra/Mythra) and stage bosses (Ridley) yes, but not assist trophies.

Glad I found another active sprite animator! Just subbed to the channel. I’m trying to find most if not all the active sprite channels because I recently became one and want to help start up the community again.

I might be crazy, but I think I wanted Shadow to come and win Rewind Rumble more than I want him in smash, yet Shadow's fight was last year. And I really do want to see Tails and Knuckles come to Rewind Rumble and hoping they win more than I would want them in smash as well. I feel like I'm the only one.

Well my Battle of Sprites Animation has a similar concept... Nintendo, SEGA and other Anime Characters like Goku Vegeta or Luffy etc.

Sonic is the 3rd party franchise to need another representative. There are 3 possible characters to become fighters: Shadow, Tails, Dr. Eggman. In my opinion it should be Shadow to break the (-) stigma on Sonic as campy & annoying playstyle. To also break the mold of having TWO spin dashes (just why did they do this?).
We see a patern in Fighters Pass 2, that the characters are from the same company from Fighter Pass 1. We have Nintendo with Byleth & Min Min. We have Microsoft with Banjo & Steve. We have Squire Enix with Hero & Sepiroth. Now we three slots left. So far the two other companies Altus & SNK & third slot for fan favorite.
Joker from Persona franchise which is owned by Altus franchise which is also owned by Sega. So Sega can add another Sonic representative in Smash.
Shadow can be added in a way that Sakurai tells us the Assist Trophy Shadow is a "Shadow Android" & gives the possibility for the real Shadow to be playable. I think Shadow should be the one to break the Assist Trophy "fan rule".
Shadow can be sort of a mix between Sonic & Mewtwo with a hint of EDGE to the hog. A character who is nearly as fast as Sonic with Chaos powers that can teleport, throw projectiles, can even create a huge explosion (Chaos Blast). This time Sakurai needs to bring moveset from SONIC BATTLE to Shadow's moveset. Make people appreciate the Sonic Franchise.
Not to mention that Sonic's 30th anniversary is right around the corner. What better way to celebrate than to bring in "The ULTIMATE LIFEFORM" in Smash Ultimate.

I mean Sakurai, I respect all your work, in fact I normally didn't mind if my favorite characters were assist trophies, but come on, it is Shadow, Sonic's 3rd most biggest rival (Mario, Metal Sonic, Shadow) and speaking of Mario, HE IS THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE COVER ART and the Same one that was Nintendo's biggest mascot itself. If you can't so much Mario characters EVEN A PLANT, why couldn't you do that at least once with Mario's biggest rival?

That is actually a very good question. I dont think i find neither of them better than the other. They both made up big parts of my childhood and I love it to do work like animations and stuff with both of them. They're really both my favorite at the end of the day
