Qantas says goodbye to a long-serving member of the family, the VH-OJM Boeing 747 aircraft. Take a look at her send off. Find out about her replacement: dreamliner.qan...
Maurits Veen fuck the MD-11 JK, the MD-11 is one of my old favorites, next to the DC-10, they're both very nice planes, good thing they're still being used as freighters
The 787 is Not a proper replacement for a 747! No upper deck, no nose seating. The 787 though a great plane is a mid size plane. Qantas should supplement the 787 with the new 747-8i which has all the positive 747-400 attributes that Qantas passengers know and love combined with 787 tech engines that give much better fuel economy than their a380. Go on Qantas Get the 747-8i. Your facebook a380 v 747 poll proved Qantas passengers prefer the 747, with many comments wanting the 747-8i
Sam MacDonald *Oh listen to the Boeing fanboy, move on muppet.... The 787 is a time bomb made by assembly line stoners who get high as kites whilst assembling.... Go watch a doco called 787 broken dreams*
Fangzahn Aviation Studios I reckon the A380 would be doing better as a pax jumbo than the infamous queen which is now really considered more of a freight plane.
Benjamin Hawkins the A380 Is Not fuel efficient. The 747 dash 8 looks 1000 times more better and is more fuel efficient as her little sisters like the -400 and the A380
I flew on OJM from LAX to BNE. Thinking it would be my last flight in a 747, I booked my seat in the upper deck. Even in business class, this plane was looking old.
It's going to be the saddest time to see the 747 out of the skies, from being in the aircraft and plane spotting it's such an amazing experience, thank you to all the 747 variants and all the crew to giving us a such a fantastic experience💞💕💯
I know it's hard to sell a 4-engined plane these days but I would've liked to see them replace this with a 747-8i. I know a 787 is much cheaper to run but it's a lot smaller too and IIRC the 787 and 747-8i use the same engines
Kate Dawson it sure does, there's no way any 787 can replace a 747, the size difference is just too much even if it was a 787-10. I think the 787 is a good replacement for a 767, the only Boeing replacement for the 744 in my opinion would be a 748 or at the very least a 777-300
I think you guys need to understand that a lot of airlines (Including Qantas I assume) bought the -400 not for its capacity, but its incredible range. A lot of current -400 routes like BNE-LAX-JFK don't need the capacity of the -400, and as such are being replaced by the 787. The A380 is the 747s replacement for high density routes.
I noticed something about Qantas's 747s: The 747 is a plane many passengers complain about due to its age. Most airlines often keep their 747 fleet in atrocious condition, with poor IFE, seats, and cleanliness. Not once have I EVER heard anyone complain about flying Qantas's 747s. That is a testament to how well you keep your aircraft maintained.
Hate the way commercial aviation is going. Especially when a 747 is retired to be replaced by a generic twin engined, Lego 787. Not even the same size, scale or presence. And no one mention economy as the 747-8 is more than up for the job. Sad times.
I was disappointed to find this video is an ad for the 787; I have flown on this particular 747 (OJM) on many occasions; it was on regular Brisbane-Singapore duties a few years back (before they downgraded the service to a two-class A330.. which was really bad news because I could usually stretch the company travel policy to cover premium economy on the return red-eye but not business; so back to economy for me..) when I was travelling to there often and I always got this one.. It will be sad to see them go...
Talk about click bait. A 787wankfest video , its barely about OJM at all. I would rather be on a 747 than crammed into the 787 sardine tin. BTW Qantas, you are pretty late in the game with 787s anyway....old, old news from an aviation perspective.
People are saying that the 787 isn't big enough and can't carry enough passengers but the truth is that we are moving toward a system where we have more smaller planes flying long haul flights instead of less larger planes. Having more smaller planes fly these routes means that airlines don't have to fill up such a large plane. This means that they can run these flights more frequently. It also means that airlines will be able to fly more direct flights from smaller airports because it isn't as hard to fill up a flight.
Ashton Cofer Yea I understand what you are saying, but there is still need for bigger aircraft to transport low frequency and high concentration of passengers also the 747 I believe is better than the A380 which is set to “replace” the 747. Additionally the 747 is still a profitable and cost effective aircraft and could make more ,only than a 787 because it carries more passengers and cruises faster and for longer also the 747 or the A380 are safer than any twin engined aircraft because you have 4 back up engines and seeing that the 747 and A380 have 4 engines they would be perived as safer aircraft, I also believe if Qantas does retire their 7474’s the mid-range seat market would be lost and they would have to operate more aircraft on certain routes which would be more costly and weirdly be more costly on the environment.
I am no airline expert, but I have always enjoyed the argument that 787s are more fuel efficient than 747s and therefore are "the wave of the future." Well, yeah....take an airplane and reduce its size, passenger and cargo capacity, then lop off two engines.....of course it is going to be "more fuel efficient." Any long haul trucking company could increase its fuel efficiency by going to day cabs and pup trailers, too ....... On the other hand, the 747 is the 6 ounce Coke -- the perfect combination of style and substance, passenger and cargo capacity, which is to say an airplane that can generate far more than twice the revenue per flight than some new fangled POS that is only being bought so that airline CEOs can have ribbon cutting photos of themselves. The 747 is the only plane that has ever mattered and will always be the only plane that matters.
New owner of OJM? What's he talking about? No airline is buying 747-400s nowadays. That thing is going to end up dumped in the Mojave desert next to the other retired Qantas 747s and 767s.
Goodbye 747 ..rest in peace my love...you always be...the queen of the sky remember that. And helloooooo little 787 dreamliner...the dreams come true...i love this plane but my favorite is...........777-300ER.
When travelling on a long flight I would prefer the space offered by the A380. The Dreamliner is going to be very cramped for space in economy. The premium classes good but not as much so due to limited space as outgoing 747 or A380.
I completely understand that four engined aircraft aren't as fuel efficient, but if I had an airline, I'd keep at least one 747 because it has a special place in my heart. I'd buy tons of 787's, 777X's or A350's. But at least ONE 747 will be kept. :D
At this rate there will be no such thing as the 747! Anymore!! Sadly everyone is getting rid of them except British Airways. Or we could fly one on UPS since they just ordered 10 plus 747-8Fs
The 747 is the perfect aircraft for cargo flights. It wont be retired soon.Since the 90s higher fuel prices forced airlines to retire their jumbo jets and opt for new, fuel efficient 787s.
That is correct! but at the rate of orders on Boeing's 747 vs A380. Airbus will be around more for commercial side of flight. With Boeing on the cargo side
The 787 is too bloody small for longhaul,,, and it' bounces about like a yoyo because of its lightness !!!! Future air travel is getting grimmer and grimmer 😢
Qantas doesn't have as many long long haul flights anymore as they used to have 12 years ago. Back then, Qantas operated the route Frankfurt Sydney twice or thrice a week in a 744 with a 5 hour refuelling stopover in Singapore (QF6 back then and QF5 return). Now they only have a direct flight Frankfurt Dubai operated by emirates. And even any of the US bound routes are a lot shorter. Fact is Qantas just doesn't have the need for that many that big long haul planes. Heathrow Dubai is one of the only, if not the only connection that qantas flies themselves in Europe and I'm sure even that is never full. And if we look back again, 12 years ago, routes the length of Frankfurt Dubai were operated by 767 back then already. Every second an aircraft stays on the ground costs you money, so you rather get smaller aircraft and should the need rise you fly more often than have a bigger aircraft and it not being even half full flying twice a week (2005 the FRA SYD wasn't even half full... basically me and my parents could each occupy a for seat row to get some z's without disturbing anyone on the plane)
I wish that Qantas along with other world class elite airliners such as British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air France, etc would purchase the Boeing 747-8 intercontinental fleet series.
Jerome Graham-Record the reason why airlines like Singapore Airlines order the A380 is that it allows them to make premium products better my guess is that one a 747 it is harder and it is good for airport which have very expensive slots like LHR and it is better for a country like Singapore since it is a small country which means the A380 allows pilots to fly one or two flights day for Lufthansa and Korea my theory is that if they their A380 have an issue they can temporarily replace it with a 747
I miss travelling on big, proper aircraft. The last 5 longhaul trips I've done were all on the 787 and it is an absolutely dreadful experience sitting in that 3-3-3 sardine can for up to 14 hours. Aviation seems to be all heading in that direction now so I think I'll swim to my next destination once this pandemic is over
Its shame that 747s are slowly been replaced, 747 truly is the queen of the air, and i doubt that companies couldnt retrofit them, to make them more fuel efficient. 747 is only plane that can carry over 600 passangers (747-8 - 700) so why retiring such magnificent planes, for cheaper smaller 787 and A350's, fuel is main reason, but new fuels can be created which would allows 747 to remain in service for decades, at least 747-8 will remain for decades.
Boeing will always be a more beautiful aircraft in my opinion. I know thats hendrix verses clapton but that sharp nose cone looks more mean than airbus's rounded nose. Plus the wings on that dreamliner are soo dam good looking. Im about to start college in aeronautics, hope to see these up close
9 across seating in economy on a 787 isn't my idea of a good replacement for a 747! It'll be a bloody nightmare on short flights, let alone 18 hours PER-LHR.
I am getting tired of the children in the comments who think that airlines choose what planes they have based off of their status with the public. Please disable comments on future videos.
yes 787 is like a new commodore compared to something nice like a fj holden ie 747 and people will stop and look at the old plane/car and smile they wont do that with the new stuff. in reallity most people would not know what plane they are flying today anyway and could not care less! sadly
replace your 6 747-400ers and 6 A380s with 747-8i. Its not fair to replace a giant with a teeny weeny plane like the 787. Choose both 787 dreamliner and 747 advanced in the fleet .
Everyones getting salty about this commercial bus in the sky retiring while im over here still upset about the concorde retiring from our skies permanently :( with no talk in years about a viable replacememt for a supersonic commercial jet.
Craigs list ad " 747 good condition, one owner, only 90 million kilometers. "
Congratulations to VH-OJM on it's retirement after 26 years of service with Qantas!!! We will miss you :'-(
Happy trails, OJM. You shall be missed.
Goodbye VH-OJM i will always remember you in Santiago Int'l Airport
Nothing is as attractive as the Queen of the Skies. Going to miss seeing them.
Love the wing on the Dreamliner though!
I was lucky enough to catch her just 21 days before her retirement... what a bird.
This feels like saying goodbye to the MD-11...
Maurits Veen fuck the MD-11

Sam MacDonald it's really more like a 767 replacement. The 787 is not even close in size to the 747.
They have the 380 in their fleet to do their heavy lifting.
I was just going to say that! :-)
Sam MacDonald *Oh listen to the Boeing fanboy, move on muppet.... The 787 is a time bomb made by assembly line stoners who get high as kites whilst assembling.... Go watch a doco called 787 broken dreams*
You sound pretty delusional CC, is it something stronger than dope or just natural for you?
Nooo please don't go. Can't you stay around a couple more years!
Happy retirement old girl! Long live the queen of skies
The 747 is and always be the queen of the skies. Nothing even comes close to this beautiful aircraft.
I'd prefer the Queen over the 787
Fangzahn Aviation Studios I reckon the A380 would be doing better as a pax jumbo than the infamous queen which is now really considered more of a freight plane.
Gulliver Yang a380 is ugly

What the hell was this propaganda video? Nothing can replace the queen.
I know that they have to retire these cool aircraft for the 787 but I really wish Qantas kept these beauty's flying!!
This 747 is now at Mojave Airport Graveyard in Southern California. Huge thanks for sharing!
I flew on OJM from LAX to BNE. Thinking it would be my last flight in a 747, I booked my seat in the upper deck. Even in business class, this plane was looking old.

The 787 is cool and all. But the 747 is irreplaceable.
Great little video, thanks for making it and sharing Qantas. Good marketing..
Outstanding, above and beyond 🥂
We will always remenber you VH-OJM, goodbye 747. You always will remain the queen of the skies 😢
The 78 has NOTHING on the 47. Not a valid comparison.
I know it's hard to sell a 4-engined plane these days but I would've liked to see them replace this with a 747-8i. I know a 787 is much cheaper to run but it's a lot smaller too and IIRC the 787 and 747-8i use the same engines

Bob Bolitho that all depends on how qantas configures it
Very true! I flew a Lufthansa A380 flight from Hong Kong to Frankfurt in economy in the top deck and theres so much more room due to its sheer size.
They should configure 2-4-2 seatings (8 abreast) just like how ANA did in their 787 economy
☹️ VH-OEI is my favorite since I flew it
Trust me, if you ever hear the sound of RB211's at takeoff thrust from inside the cabin, you'll change your mind with no hesitation.
Really? Mine's VH-OEE
Mine is OEJ because, you know, wunala livery, last 747 of qantas etc etc but she does give an attachment
I’m crying 😭😢

paul Parker "Bounces about like a yoyo" Have you even sat in one? The flexibility of the wings help it to cancel out a lot of turbulence.

Julian Munday same
Julian Munday Sadly a lot of airlines have retired their 747 fleets
Julian Munday Never been on one too!
Julian Munday maybe you could go to Frankfurt and then fly to jfk with Lufthansa. U may be in one of their 747-8
Save up and do it while you can. I've always regretted not flying on concorde while I was able 😭
Love qantas

I like this plane
Qantas, if i had a airline I would really want it to be a airline with qantas and jetstar.
NO RETIREMENT PLEASE. NO NO NO 😭😭
BRING THEM BACKKKK 😭
Congratulaton !
Was it totally out of the question to buy another 747-8i for this one ? Why ?
Thanks
my only request is to put the OJM on display to be remembered instead of scrapped.
When the last 747 retires, I hope all the Qantas staff will gather and sing "Sydney from a 747."
Yeah retiring the 747 for a dream liner isn't all worth while but ok.
Captain Cooper saves gas
The 747-400 is no where is near as fuel efficient and economic as a 787. So it actually is worth while.
Why Qantas don't buy the Boeing 747-8
Lol Alvarez Curiel because the 787 is so much cheaper to run
ok :''v
Will this particular aircraft someday make it to a museum?
Its shame that 747s are slowly been replaced, 747 truly is the queen of the air, and i doubt that companies couldnt retrofit them, to make them more fuel efficient. 747 is only plane that can carry over 600 passangers (747-8 - 700) so why retiring such magnificent planes, for cheaper smaller 787 and A350's, fuel is main reason, but new fuels can be created which would allows 747 to remain in service for decades, at least 747-8 will remain for decades.

TIL QANTAS stands for Queensland and Northern Territories Airline Service.
Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services you mean?
Sydney787 Aviation Same thing :^)
I watched her full last flight to Mojave desert :(

747-8 thanks
How can we forget how Qantas nearly retired VH-OJH early but we will gloss over that! Look at the skin stretch marks on Juliet Mike at 0.57.
According to flightradar, now the plane is in Mojave, so I doubt that there is any chance to see it again in the sky.
GUYS
I SAW A QUEEN B747 A FEW WEEKS AGO IN SYDNEY AIRPORT
:OO
So you guys are slowly phasing out the 744's for the 787's?
787 is more well not as much as a well known plane but it's more accurate the first twin engine that can fly 12 hours plus
JumpyRyanPlays101 that's not true... 777's can fly over 12 hours and are much older than the 787 hahaha
Boeing commercial? Even 777-9 would be a better replacement for 747.
To provide passengers with a new customer experience = yes more cramped and less comfortable seats.
I'm sad because I live in Seattle
Did Qantas ever consider 777-300er or even the new A350-1000 as its replacement
Raj Nirvan oddly enough they were one of the major airlines to be a part of the 777 development but they didnt buy any
I am getting tired of the children in the comments who think that airlines choose what planes they have based off of their status with the public. Please disable comments on future videos.

Give it to me
Why get rid of it and replace it with a smaller aircraft don't make sense
replace your 6 747-400ers and 6 A380s with 747-8i. Its not fair to replace a giant with a teeny weeny plane like the 787. Choose both 787 dreamliner and 747 advanced in the fleet .
Hey Qantas can I have a some airplanes I would love it. I mean the ones you don't use anymore
For real
Where is it going? Who's buying her?
Why don't they do that Sydney-London flight every day?
The one time they did it, they were only able to fly with 16 passengers, and they needed specialized fuel.
Oh, that makes more sense. I was thinking it was something like that.
Meanwhile Alitalia is proud of theirs 777-200 😂😂😂😂
Not for long....lol
Everyones getting salty about this commercial bus in the sky retiring while im over here still upset about the concorde retiring from our skies permanently :( with no talk in years about a viable replacememt for a supersonic commercial jet.
Very sad..
No not Longreach!! 😭 😭
