It’s hard to always be respectful, and honor parents, or a parent if they are constantly disrespectful to you, saying, or doing things to hurt you mentally, emotionally, or even physically for no apparent reason. I need God to help give me more wisdom on this, and understand how to deal with situations as such.

I came here because I want to honor my parents, I was raised in a manner that I don't. And I want to because I believe there is freedom in that.
I'm only 12 minutes in and crying. This is perfect and I want more - how do I get more? I want to study how for me, and how to teach for my family. How to be a better influence. How to create the environment, structure, and beliefs.

My mom always showed us her affection by cooking & cleaning. But emotionally it was always my dad. I wish I was closer to my mom but she doesn't really give me any advice or we don't have good conversations like I do with my dad. My dad just gets me and I can talk about the stresses of life & he listens. But still forever grateful for both of them. It's probably hard raising four children.

My mom is a Christian who loves God with all her heart. While she usually tries to go by God's values, she also has cultural influences that often flow i to what she let's me or doesn't let me do. I'm 17 and she doesn't let me date. My best friend and I are both Christians and we want to get married after High School but she says it's too early for me to even consider dating someone. We've been dating secretly behind her back, both of us trying to have a godly relationship and not lead eachother to sin, whether sexual or not (I used to struggle with anger issues a lot but he helped me to overcome that a bit and keep my calm). But I am disobeying my mom and having this relationship isn't really me obeying her. I've been praying a lot about it and I've talked to her about him before, but she told me to break up with him, which she thinks I did. Can someone please pray for me or give me advice? I don't want to be lying but I don't want to let her control my private life all the time either.

And it comes to pass, after all the warnings of God, when he hears the words of the curse, that he blesses himself in his heart. Saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of my heart, to add drunkenness to thirst! He will say, yet I have become rich, I have found substance. In all my labors you shall say and find no iniquity in me that is sin. But they that be rich fall into temptation and a snare, falling into many foolish and hurtful lust. Which drown men in destruction and perdition.

Listening to your parents is important but some parents are too controlling. A common example is the parent that wants their kid to go to a certain school just to be a doctor or a lawyer or something. They don’t know whats best for you. If God leads you to do that then of course do it. My dad for a while wanted me to just go to a nice school and make a ton of money. Eventually God worked it out and made him receptive to the different plans God had for me but I am very glad that I didn’t listen to my father in that circumstance.

As if you don’t need to take heed to your rules that you set for your children. You need to follow those rules too to show kids equality and not be so jaded when they grow old

Y'know , I wish less people would make less jokes about adolescence. Every teenager alive today has problems, and sometimes their parents don't understand because they can't, and it's not fair to say that parents have to put up with their children. It could be argued that children have to put up with their parents! More people should be aware of this!!!

Honoring parents is a commandment but rememeber Paul said in one of his letters "Honor those when Honor is due" which makes since, because some parents rape, beat, molest, are homicidal, etc. So not ALL parents derserve honor.. So yes honor PARENTS not scumbags.
To help further prove my point do you think you'd honor a serial killer who was a veteran? No! God is just, so in term, this commandment only applies to parents who love their child. Not to the ones who purposefully try to ruin them.

    2) I'm sorry if I missed something- in advance- but making an 'unselfish decision to have you?' (Putting ASIDE any thought of having an 'A' , or that it's llegal, then it's not a choice. So.. now Mom just crowned herself as a martyr and it feels good, so you can forget the really unselfish act of placing that child in a loving home. Its expensive for them too, btw- regardless of money.) Having you as a result of 10 mins of conscious choice w/o entertaining the consequences is not about being selfless and more about making a child feel indebted to a 'martyr'. It's beyond painful. And being honest w this type of parent is a BIG No.There are tons of reasons why that's dangerous. Is there a moment of concern abt a kid in that audience right now with toxic parents who are reveling in the idea that yes, of course that kid owes you for the crumbs of good days in- between the daily, toxic slices of the bread of life. That makes me verrry nervous. Clarifying the exceptions first might save that child from cringing in their seat (as I did) next to smirking parents who'll be sure to repeat the parts of the sermon that justify their treatment.. I think we're all too aware of abuse behind closed doors due to the internet now. Guilting and isolating a child who is finally- maybe this morning- trying to stand up straight in 'honesty' for even just an hour. Being sychologically broken by parents daily and hearing some of this without clarification is what makes some kids want to just die. Separating the malicious and toxic chaff from the wheat (I'm having a bread theme today) somewhere at the top wld be wonderful.
I know parents who absolutely have negatively and selfishly impacted their child's life and that child hates Themself, even more convinced, that all the 'honoring' is due and expected. The cog/dissonance from that is crippling. I know a young person (even adults only now aware of information) who wanted to kill themself when they were told they should've been flushed down a toilet..there's that 'unselfish for having you' and honoring issue again.
I love how you usually teach tackling life's problems biblically, but there are minors, young adults, etc in the audience,.. no?
    THAT'S all I'm saying.
And "please don't hear what I'm Not saying." (ode to K.Reese).
Assuming imperfect, yet healthy parents, however..its a great sermon.
    Thanks.

My father does have few spells of wisdom, but it's mixed in with saying that the bible has either lies from "apostles" or from "translations" being lies from cathalism, so he doesn't trust the bible, or pastors.
Yet I still, listen to my father, try to spend time with him, do as he asks of me, even when he threatens to kill me if I take safety into account when doing what he asks of me, I still forgive him.
And yet, I find it hard to fully forgive him, still resenting him for constantly wronging me, so pretty much, I'm no better to God as my father is to me.
With the money I make I am incapable of providing for my family, does that mean I am not a Christian.
    Easy answer, no.
That bible version is purposefully written with hysterical language to mean, it is an unacceptable thing that a person who can take care of his family, doesn't.
I'm 22, and my mother is my Christian goal, she loves God with all her heart, and I want to be just like her.
She keeps me in church and was there for my baptism, where my father didn't want to come, because "it didn't have anything to do with him".

I know what you mean, thanks for sharing. Just reject what is evil, and hold tight to everything that is good. Romans 12:9.
You'll eventually be in the position of providing, later.

How about Adopted kids? Going on about DNA and labor doesn't address adoptions.

I was not adopted and my children are biologically mine, but I think the people who raise you are your Mama and Daddy. I knew a lady who 's daughters called her mama, but in reality they were her granddaughters and she was their grandmother, but she had raised them since they were 6 and 8 when their mother died. Mama and Daddy are special titles given to people who raise a child, making the child part of themselves, part of their dreams for the future. In some cases those people are grandparents, in others and aunt and uncle, and in others total strangers.

My parents do not deserve to have a daughter. They should give me away for an adoption when I was a baby because they hated female so much especially my father. They shouldn't torture me with humiliation and curse everyday. Maybe they are just a psycho who love to bully me.

What does it mean to be a father? What does it mean to be a mother? To assume that your biological parents, or legal guardians are your father and mother makes little sense, especially if they are not Jewish. A father is somebody who draws a child towards God. And a mother is somebody who nurtures that child, in his spiritual growth. To honour your parents then requires you to discern them. Now many preach the Gospel falsely, badly, or for a paycheck, and to have authority over others, to keep them subservient to cesar, and productive workers... their function is to keep the slaves in bondage.

you don't have to LEARN to honor your parents. The problem is with THOSE parents who treat their children in a horrible narcicistic way.

What about parents? Fathers do not provoke your children to anger but discipline them in admonition to the Lord. Ephesians 3 4 ...What 1 sided preaching, parental pride parents...let it go, God want us to be us to live righteous and holy, we live in the house rules of God not the pride of a man in his home. How can a man raise a child and be a father when he lacks spritual fruit/maturity?

The grace to you sermon about the same subject by John MacArthur is so different on what each pastors focus is I just think Rick is letting fame get to him. Some may not see it but I notice boasting of the people he hangs out with and knows. And also he’s shamed to say that homosexuality is wrong instead he gives it a run around so he doesn’t loose his famous buddies like Opra
