People say that 3208s are throwaway engines (simply because they're un-sleeved), but I refuse to believe that. One man's "worn out" 3208 is another's self-machined overbore lol. Not like it would be difficult to machine the bores for sleeves anyways, if you wanted to.
The early 3208s were sleeved. Couldn't tell you what years. I just know everytime I research rebuild kits they have early and late versions. Early comes with new sleeves.
Oz Tallent if I would have done it with my new phone it would have sounded better but this was a good while before I bought it so I went with what I had
Engine is still rated a 25000(1.2millon miles) hours before a mild rebuild is needed from cat great engine only had problems if lazy dumptruck drivers didn't keep there radiators clean and got the engines hot many many marine engines with 30 to 40 thousand hrs on them
It's a cool build , an I'd like to have one myself , but promise me you'll make yours sound and run better than the one in this Video ! This one is the worst sounding 3208 I've ever heard an I've been around a bunch of them..
I have an 89 F350 crew cab dump bed 4x4 with a 6.9 diesel and a ZF5. Almost the same. My 6.9 smoked almost that bad before I changed the injector pump and injectors. Now it blows black instead of blue. Still get's 12mpg... xD
These cats will take any of the Eaton Fuller SAE 1 semi transmissions as long as it was standard in the first place. The Allison cats had a different bell housing. I personally have the Eaton road ranger 10-speed overdrive transmission out of a 1980s cabover Kenworth that had a Cummins in it.
gonna build one of these but need something 1975 or older. Here in Kalifornia you don't need to smog cars and trucks that old. Would like to do an inline 6 though.
If it's a factory diesel you don't have to smog anything older than 98 so you can get newer if it came with a diesel from the factory. If the truck is 14000 GVW or higher your're screwed.
walkabout1094 it sits for weeks at a time. It’s pretty cold blooded and likes to sputter around until it gets warmed up. We need to get some new injectors done up for it sometime and a fresh set of turbos.
Love the setup.. but I think your turbo seals are blown which might explain the constant white smoke and little to no whistle. And the oil lines to and/or from the turbo's are leaking which hints all of the oil coating on them. Either that rebuild the turbo's and she'll run way more impressive man. I recognize the turbo seal issue.. had that happen to my 6.0 once already. Nevertheless awesome build. 👌👍
@@oldironacres9151 farm truck or not, I would be worried, not only does she run pretty doggish but you could put yourself in a oil runaway situation. The worst runaway you could have, and I’m sure swapping that motor wouldn’t be easy. Anyways very impressive build
I mean it's totally badass, don't get me wrong, but I'll never understand the point of cramming a 10 liter engine into a 1 ton... It's not really the same as cramming a 454 in to a Camaro, and it serves a whole lot less of a purpose since the rest of the truck can't possibly handle what that engine can. Besides that, those poor turbos need to be a good bit larger, at least a set of hx40s, even better yet a set of hx45s, even a hx40/52 combo if you could fit it, but that'd require major changes. I'd be willing to bet you still have this ole thing after all this time, so that's something at least.
@@d.j.758 I mean it's cool, but with the options for transmissions, whatever gearing you had before, it's even shorter and slower now, and I'd be surprised if it was genuinely any zippier or more fun to drive. Definitely more fun to listen to, definitely more fun to talk about, definitely more fun to look at, but seriously probably not more fun to drive. Any time I picture a 3208 swap it's always in something like a 4-550 or a Kodiak or topkick or something, and more like the 3116 out of a Kodiak in a 1 ton, as it just flat out seems like a more useful and practical approach.
@@d.j.758 that being said I'd like to have a running 3208 on a stand with a 100ft string attached to the throttle tied around my belt loop so I could walk around my shop and rev it and listen to it all day while I work, so you have one good reason.
Your voice and that truck go well together. A true American. lol
More videos of this beast! I want to hear it drive!
She's a keeper 👍, I hope you still have her
Love this setup and the sound.

i love this. i want to built a 73-77 crew cab with a 3208. more videos please!
clancy mclean my father also built an 85 one ton ford like this and a 68 one ton
thats awesome! can you make more videos of these trucks please?
clancy mclean the 68 doesn’t run its parked in the garage and the 85 we pulled apart about 5 years ago and put the motor in this one
oh i see. well id still like to see more of your truck in the future
Old conversation but I'm planning a 76 Ford crewcab with a 3208
Twin “turboe” love it!
Damn good job, any updates?

What kinda mileage do you get with that set up?
The way it is measured on here is gallons per mile
I have a 3208 in an l-8000 Ford and got 10mpg with a 4 horse trailer going to Wyoming
Can I get a full picture of that bumper? I got the same year truck and I want to replicate that front bumper
I love the sound effects. Lol
Ya can you give exactly what you used for the trans I want to make mine 4x4 to

Derrick Geltmaker straight pipe with twin turbo. Idk how you think it sounds bad. It does need new injectors.

1989 should be 7.3L IDI unless swapped.
@@pcwizzy460 nope I’ve got a 89 with the 6.9
Looking to put one in a 08 F450.
I know it will fit no problem. Need a good trans any recommendations?
5×2 Spicer was common with the baby Cat
This one has a trans out of a single axle freightliner

Is SAE 1 the name of the correct bell housing?

How hard is it to do the swap i’m thinking about doing the same?
did you have to set the 3208 back or ahead inorder to fit if so how did you get the tran to work
Jack Mckinley everything is really in the same place. Just a lot bigger

Still sweet

Old school. I remember not being able to get up my driveway till engine was warm. Nowadays start and drive.
Take care
walkabout1094 you take care too man.
Biscuits and mustard I like them caterpillars too uuuhhmmm
What kind of power you looking at with the twins
JimmyCasket 02 couldn’t tell ya honestly. Never had her on a Dino. She makes a lot more power than a 400 horse 7.3.
Awesome Job
What type of bumper is that?
Timothy Hoke my old man built it. It’s just a pipe bumper. The bottom half is frame steel from a tractor trailer.
Old Iron Acres could I get a full picture I sorta want to replicate it
CAT swap is so cool.

Jared Bussey yeah it definitely needs turbo work and injectors. Just an old farm truck so not too concerned with it.

Sassy Sasquatch I believe it gets about 19 MPG
how much money to buy it from you?
how much hp does it make?
All of them.
it sounds like it has a pretty bad missfire
4th video truck with 3208 cat engine, everyone just start it up, but no one drives the car
Poor old turbos have seen better days
Donny The Dealer yeah we need to either get them rebuilt or just replace them. We haven’t decided what route we’re gonna go yet.
I've always wanted to see one kf these rev to 3000 or even 4000rpm if somebody manages to get them that high
They'll go to 3 grand the one in my dump truck hits 3 grand easy
Want one !!
Jason Montgomery definitely a beast but talk about hard on drive shafts

Can I swap this motor on jeep? It’s amazing
Jay I’m afraid that ain’t possible man. This beast wasn’t the easiest to put in a full size truck.
I don't think Freightliner makes transmissions. It's probably an eaton fuller
