Very nice trailer. Looks so relaxing. I also built a low cost square drop olive green trailer military style with Pinto hitch. Built the frame and all from scratch which was fun. The cabin is a 5x8, but 6.5 x8 if axles length is added in for stability. It's a self sufficient unit with solar, 1500 watt invertor, shore power, generator electrical, and propane. If needed, it also has a small wood fire vented mini stove. Built in Interior lights with outside spot light controlled from inside due to spending lots of time in bear country. Made the door with a window, totally insulated with styrofoam. All the sliding opening windows, A small galley in the rear. It's also fairly high with lots of clearance with military trailer tires. Also put in little luxuries such as phone charge outlets, stereo, and two ways. All cooking is done outside though. Had lots of good knowledgeable help. Love going to places and looking at other trailers. It's like an idea factory. Also love the rear door on yours. The two main differences between yours and mine is the slight foot length inward angle at the rear for ditches etc but sadly, I used frame lag bolts instead of the cable idea which I like. Really nice build you did. Thank you for showing your build to us.
Nice camper, leaving your trailer to having a duel purpose. I’m into everything except the entrances of climbing over steel side railing. Being a little older I’d need to build an attachable side step to enter safely. Great job👍
I like the simplicity and neat design. Building cabinets and adding a bunch of stuff just makes it harder to maintain and repair or upgrade. It's good. I like it.
Love your shirt! I'm originally from Detroit. Grew up there then late 80s early 90s we moved north for obvious reasons and now I'm in the PNW but Michigan is still home.
you guys are the best. been looking for this kind of design. i think we are brothers from another mother. ANSWERED ALL MY QUESTIONS. MY CONFIDENCE LEVEL IS COMPLETE
This is a neat package! I have considered doing something much like this. But a slightly different configuration. To gain additional interior room, I would bump out the sides a bit over the side top rails to extend the width to nearly the outside of the fenders. Then maybe add running boards to the sides of the trailer in front of and or behind the wheels for additional storage capacity of items which always seem to find themselves coming along and taking up space inside of the camper. Things like tools, shovels, axes, buckets, blocks, nicknacks or whatever.
The options are endless on a personal build like this. Sounds like yours will be a bit more in depth than mine. If you have a video series on it I’d love to follow along. Thanks for watching.
Putting it on a prebuilt trailer makes the entire setup a hair heavier than it needs to be but I sort of like things being bulletproof. Mines solid. Good luck.
Nice job on your camper build, I'm glad to see people starting to make campers that can come off the trailer. That's the way it should always have been for all campers. I liked your awnings and those doors you purchased.
We love this thing. About to road trip it to Florida behind the Jeep Wrangler. Stay tuned for that video in a month or so. If I did it again, I’d focus a little more on weight, reducing where possible. Not bad though. Thanks for joining us!
I love this build, I have been watching DIY overland builds for about a year now, and the modularity of this one is fantastic, and would eliminate the need for two trailers, two sets of trailer licenses etc. Great job!!!
Thanks Charlie, the trailer situation was the plan all along. Seems to work good. If I were to donut again I would pay closer attention to weight. Doesn’t matter for my rig but I can definitely see advantages to being lighter.
When you go to replace the carpet, look at commercial carpet squares. They're a couple bucks per 24" square but they will outlast your camper... and you can just replace the bad squares if you wear something out or track dog shit in or something like that.
Great idea... like the on.. off and still have a trailer for multi use... great work... Michigan here... i may have to build one myself... Happy cramping
Awesome build . I been wanting to build one . Just a some tips get you about 3 2x6 in 3 different length with 45degs cut one each ends make leveling up easy . 2 gets some jack stands for front take weight off the tongue jack good and happy camping
This man has dialect in check. I'm from Michigan. Plenty of family in Dearborn area. I forget when I visit, no one thinks about stopping or slowing down for anything or anyone. Child sacrifice on Telegraph lane 3, everyone takes 1 and 2.
Really like a lot of your ideas. Love the orange color. Like the back storage that’s not a kitchen, never liked the rear kitchens. Great job thank you for sharing.
Well now I KNOW my droid phone is listening to me. We watched a couple of DIY tear drop builds today and I remarked "I don't know why someone wouldn't just build a box on skids to slip into a 5x8 landscape trailer." I even looked up the Sure-Trac site and local dealer. Take a few hours for dinner, come back to the 'puter, and here you are! Nice idea and build!
@@LivingOurAmericanDream how cramped would it be for the kids to sleep short ways in the camper? I like the size of the 5x10, but want something that our family of 4 can use. How much bigger would a 6x10 feel on the road? We’d be pulling with a minivan.

Hi Sam, thanks for joining us in the channel. Regarding material, I had watched a video on UA-cam and the fella used plywood and raptor liner and it seemed to go together nice. I had never used bed liner before so it was sort of a test. If I did it again, I’d do a few more calculations on weight as I think I could knock off a few hundred pounds along the way. On power, I only use one battery pack and don’t yet have any solar so I’m probably not the one to advise on that front. Good luck and have fun with it!
Love your camper. Just about done with mine. Its very similar, no galley though, and except for tbe floor its all the 2inch foamboard. Not sure how i feel about the poor mans fiberglass, but it seems like it's going to work. Painting this weekend!
I would recommend having the cable that secures the cabin sit right before the steel studs of the trailer, not after. This way, with the pressure of highway speeds, it will have one more point of contact stopping it from sliding. Because the way you have it in this video, it has a whole channel to potentially wiggle its way to the rear
You did a good job, only change I would make is to move the fridge, over to the left a tad for full access, that would also give more storage space on the right of it. Pretty color too!!
Love this. I would have put an awning coming of the back too even if I had to get it made to fit so that I could zip or snap off and on in order to enclose the entire perimeter of the camper like some boats use to enclose the aft (back) end of the cockpit area

Very nice build to the both of you. Been looking to build my own for a couple of years now but wanting a good design to follow and so far yours is tops!
As I've watched these builds I've seen quite a few people show the raptor liner split and crack due to the plywood slightly expanding and contracting. Hope yours lasts a while. Appling fiberglass layers to the plywood first is the key to preventing it.
Wow, what a beautiful end result. Not that anyone cares, but I had a dream last night about a home built tiny camper. We are in our sunset years so I recently sold my Casita. I didn't realize they were so popular. Regardless, We will still enjoy the memories and dreams.
Reminds me of one I designed years ago but never built. I had mine sized to fit a full queen mattress and box springs without quite as much headroom. The tri-fold mattress you can use as a couch is a better idea. Also, unlike yours, however, it never occurred to me to make the sleep pod removable, although in hindsight, it makes a lot of sense!
So far it’s pretty handy. I’m considering doing another one just to try and make even better use of space and make it even lighter, perhaps for a 5x8 trailer. Thanks for watching.
Nice job! I think buying your doors and windows is a good idea because it insures a better water seal. Also just looks good and solid. I like the idea of the skid system so you can get it off if needed. Have you found it easier to maintain the bottom of the camper and trailor decking, having it removable? Or does water get trapped under the camper and you have to remove box off to dry out if caught in weather? I like the box better than the tear drop. I live in bear country Virginia. So cooking on the picnic table away from the camper keeps the food smells away from the camper. Tip..don't pour grease from a steak onto a camp fire. It not only flairs up, but it sends a plum of wonderful smells up in the air for miles. I've done that, and I had a bear hanging out in my camp when I got out of my tent the next morning. I now eat more meals in a bag, just add water kind of thing. Unless I'm with a bigger camping party. Yikes!
Definitely easier to get to and maintain the under side of the pod. I use my tractor to assist in loading and unloading (video coming soon) so I can tilt the pod for even better access. So far have not had any water issues though first trip was pretty wet weather.
I think it might be useful if you had a system where you could attach sidewalls and flooring to the awning to create a side room. Of course you would need a different awning. Now for that entry door....??? What if you cut the side portion of that black trailer just about two feet to allow for a taller door? You have two supports that would have to be moved and welded in slightly different areas but might be worth it. I would paint the unit white to reflect the sun's energy place solar panels on the roof creating a second roof to create shade. Fiberglass and epoxy to protect that wood would be on my list just like a boat. I'd use the West System.
Looks great. I've been working on one nearly identical with solar for power. I like the idea on securing to the trailer. I've been back and forth on the best way to do it myself and like what you've done.
I put quite a bit of thought into how I would attach to the trailer without doing permanent damage and without relying on the deck boards as they’re not really attached in a way to support a structure like this. The cables work great, are removable, and do absolutely not harm to the trailer. I’d recommend, but make sure you’re rigging up your cable hardware correctly or it won’t hold. Thanks!
Before i even watched this video i had the same idea to get a trailer and put on a camperpod on top. Therefor i don't alter the trailer and it stays same for the technical control we have here in Belgium. Thanks for the awesome video. Happy camping
Nice looking little camper that would be good for me on my Hunting trips and when done you can take it off and use the Trailer for something else . But I don`t know if I would call it a Tear Drop because it doesn`t look like a Tear Drop . But it`s yours so call it what you want to . Good Job .
I’d go with an enclosed trailer build. Get one with a ramp on the back. Build the interior such that everything folds up or is removable for the alternate use.

I like this far better than most teardrops. More room means not feeling like you're sleeping in a coffin.

Ron Steitz, I was thinking the same.
Being the fender is sticking out the side and the trailer is steel I would weld steps to make entry a lot easier.
What a great Idea I like it. more room and multi purpose.
Clean simple and well executed. I like that you didnt' go nuts with features and overload it. Great trailer choice.
