Every video I've seen with Jacob just makes me want to buy his machines. He's very well spoken, gives great reasons and explanations for their decisions and doesn't seem to be married to any idea. Willing to test, look at the data, and make the most logical decision for his designs and his business. Super cool.

I’ve long wanted to make an enclosure out of plywood (at least the sides). There’s some pretty nice furniture/cabinet grade plywood out there, and options like edge banding to make the edges look more appealing.
Great interview, and Jacob's an excellent communicator. I've been building printers with genuine Openbuilds V-slot/wheels since before Creality started, and it's great to see them being used properly by Construct3d, and to hear the rationale around ease of maintenance - quality is a system, not just a component.
Appreciate the video! Proud to say I’m one of the guys getting a Construct 1 XL. Construct3D has my full attention, they have something special going for em over there.
Talking with Jacob was really cool. Just an absolute font of knowledge and really cool guy. He almost got me buying one last year and probably will get me eventually cause those machines were nice.

Even better than poly-carb wheels in my personal experience: Triangle Lab kevlar-pom blend. They don't hold flat spots like normal POM, are WAY more rigid like PC wheels, and last even longer than PC wheels while being self-lubricating like POM. Best of both worlds.

There is a German company that has a process for internal polishing. They use a paste with abrasive particles that the pump back and forth. Probably more efficient than using Glow in the dark filament

Very interesting theory on the rails vs v-slot wheels.
Almost all industrial machinery use Hiwin linear rails and they're extremely robust. With routine greasing, they can easily last decades before showing any tolerance issues. For example, laser cutters use this on all axis and they're exposed to abrasive and corrosive dust and also forces from crashing the laser head. However, they still seem to last forever.
Yeah, I wonder how they're even getting that data. Could there be any compounding variables on their experimentation process
@@reviewchan9806 He did say he was talking about cheap rails, Hiwin are about 10 times more expensive than most cheap 3d printer rails.
Pm program if you keep things clean you can extend the life significantly. Linears on these types of applications are fairly low load as well. Bearings and contamination are a whole industry in itself. Pretty cool too however some seals are crazy expensive alone.
Anyways millwright do this stuff for work. And hiwins are still cheap. Skf ngk timkin. I've worked on single bearings worth 30k dollars
@@reviewchan9806 he did say that normal linear rail are better than cheap v wheel. but good v wheel are better than normal linear rail.. and premium linear rail like Hiwin are premium and more expensive than good v wheel... so.. if ur rich. go with Hiwin. im not. so im choosing normal linear rail or a good v wheel.

It will result in worse performance, it is not fully correct what he is saying. Wood has much higher internal damping compared to metals (plastics not entirely true). But you performance will be worse due to the higher mass and much lower stiffness.
@@hero767? Higher mass only has benefits for your side panels unless you measure performance by how easy it is to lift the printer.
@@twanheijkoop6753 no, you will get a nasty mode where the mass of the side panels decouple that is measurable even at the printer head
@@hero767 Ive had both mdf (for mockup) and acrylic panels on my machine and couldn't measure a difference with an adxl mounted at the nozzle.
Both were better than no panels due to extra frame rigidity ofcourse
I don't know. I'm not a MechE but much of what he said sounds wrong. 3 instead of 4 contact points is generally considered better (like how 3 -leg tables don't wobble). And they are using the wheels in such a way that the bearings are on-end, which tends to wear them out faster.
But, hey, if it actually works well long-term then great.
If you talk about blocking degree of freedom (i dont know good translate from Polish, sorry), 3 points are better. But if you talk about bearings - more points is always better. When you can adjust 4 points, its a little better than 3. For example make square table- 3 leg table dont wobble, but if you make 4-leg table with all leg adjustable - you can find a point when its not wobbling also, but its more stable - when you put something in one of corner in 3-leg table, it could fall over - square table on 4 legs not fall over.
Dumb question about wear of rails: the dust caps do like it looks nothing, right? So linear rods do wear the same even when having a dust cap? In my experience the rod dust caps sit a bit tighter on the rods than the rails caps
I've had PC wheels on my Ender 3 for years now. Never had dust or wear on them since. Still have issues with 3 wheels over 4, but at least I was on the right track it seems.
Where did you get true PC wheels that don't generate dust? AliExpress ones seem to be cruddy for me.

I have a crazy idea to smooth out the inside of the parallel heating block: put iron particles in the channel and control it with a magnetic field to let it rotate inside.

I wonder if the wood sides would discolor/dry/expand/crack after awhile if you needed to heat the chamber to do ABS or ASA? How about higher temperatures?
I run my old trusty plywood makerbot replicator with side panels, a hat and a heater to have 50-60c chamber, been doing so for good 10 years now… Yes it is more orange now visually but no more than wooden ikea trofast unit I got 8 years ago or so. I believe if stress is evenly loaded it will last forever’ish…

Yeah, but, what about the extrusions not being a precision surface? I love the bamboo plywood though - because I have been dreaming about a solid wood Mendel90 with brass bits on it, you know, a kind of functional steampunk retro 3dprinter.

Spent some time looking at these printers at SMRRF, and while they do look nice as soon as i saw the price tag matched with V wheels i completely lost interest. Not saying v wheels are bad but when your told quality and then shown v wheels at this price point compared to the competition, i just didn't get it. I could buy alot of spare rails and a printer for the £3.5k

Another thing about having 4 Wheels is all the wheels get the same amount of pressure.
So what’s a good rail vs cheap rail? Are ldo rails cheap since they aren’t hiwin ?

This guy is a brain box for sure. What he has said and done makes a lot of sense. Speaker manufacturers have known this for years re damping and MDF. I have a set of speakers made of bamboo ply, its great and look beautiful, but I prefer my marine ply set made of wisa birch ply. People have been buying $10-100k speakers made from mdf and marine ply for years, so they will pay for it and it looks sexy IMO (not so much the mdf unless its painted)
I gotta say though; isnt a significant part of the voron experience, building it?
Not sure about the V-wheels vs high quality rails personally. I could see it being true of lesser quality consumer rails without maintenance though and he is building it as a fully finished printer, not a particularly hands on build. Love the work on the melt-zone geometry and the use of abrasive filament to lap it is genius.
It's not entirely correct what he is saying. For performance you want low mass and high stiffness. Going for higher damping is something you do onlyyou cannot add any more stiffness without adding mass.

Wood is surprisingly fire resistant from a material engineering point of view.
