  • I take a look at a particular amplifier that bears the beasty tones of the monstrous Mastodon. #jcm800 #mastodon

The closest I've ever gotten to a Mastodon tone was my Orange Thunderverb 50 (Brent used to use one) and a 1986 Marshall JCM800 50 watt, running in stereo, it was MONSTEROUS!!!

they're pretty awesome. Every Time I Die is another band that's pretty infamous for using JCM800s on their older albums.

Of course you gotta use the halcyon when playing Mastodon. I want one of those just cause they’re so limited

Have a Marshall origin 50 combo. I couldn't afford the jcm800 anymore. 2203 and 2204 are 2203 100 watt, 2204 50 watt. That's all. But I been looking for a distortion pedal to give me that sound.

They usually run two amps to get their tones. Any chance you could recreate both Brent and Bill’s rigs? Especially now that you have the diezel.

I have been bouncing back and forth on which amp to get next and I keep coming back to JCM800. I have a Slo type amp(KSR Orthos) so I really want a Marshall type amp. I was thinking of getting a Friedman JJ jr cause I am a Mastodon fan and Bill has been using them lately but... most of my favorite tones by them were a JCM. Not to mention other bands I'm a huge fan of used them with various green pedals, Rats, or Fuzz. I'm supposed to have a guitar lesson with Bill tomorrow before their show but not sure if I'm going to make it.

Try to make it to the lesson. I know it will be worth it. If you get a JCM800 you can't go wrong. No matter what genre of music, punk, metal, classic rock, grunge, it will cover anything. Marshall have done a new low watt reissue if you don't want a 50 or 100 watt version. Friedmanns are absolutely amazing but a high price tag. But as far as bang for your buck goes: JCM all the way! Plus it takes pedals really well.

@@BasementGAS I ended up going to the lesson. It was really well put together. He went through a couple excercises and a run down of how he writes riffs. Really cool experience.

@@clintn6677 Hey! That's great! Glad you made it. I've heard countless times that Bill constructs the lessons very well and as a newbie or experienced played you take a lot away from the lesson. Plus Bill is such a down to earth guy. He's a real pleasure to chew the fat with 😉

I grabbed a Ceriatone 2204. I have some mercury transformers laying from a failed experiment that I'm going to install once it shows up. I'm excited

Jack, love the JCM 800... amazing amp and you are completely right, marshall amps are insanely loud outside of large venues... so I had a Marshall DSL100HR before it died this week and something I was doing to allow myself the ability to crank the amp to high power to get the tube saturation without going deaf and without the use of an attenuator was something called a JHS little black box in the effects loop. its passive and doesn't require any power supply as well as not coloring the tone. check them out, they're super cheap and work wonders www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LittleBAB--jhs-little-black-amp-box-passive-amp-attenuator

Hey Josh! Sorry to hear about your DSL100. The DSL range from Marshall are wicked. I have some DSL profiles for my Kemper from Michael Britt and they sound brilliant. Anything from JHS Pedals is always top draw in my book. Josh (from JHS) always knocks it out of the park with his pedals. I'm sorry to say though that my JCM 800 lacks an effects loop so no possibilty of getting it in there before the power amp. But I might try that black box on my Diezel VH2.

I just run a volume pedal or eq in the loop. Does the same thing.

Hey Carlos! I'm a huge fan boy when it comes to Mastodon and Billy K. Thanks for your support. How is the Epiphone Brent Hinds Signature? I've been wanting to try one out for a while but never got round to it. It looks and sounds pretty sweet. What's your opinion?

In regards to the EQ not doing much, it's definitely tied to the master level on that amp... turned down the EQ has more of an impact, with the master up like it is, it does almost nothing.
