You have the best tone, the best amps, the best guitars, the best videos and probably the best channel on UA-cam. Specially for a Marshall lover. I love it! Greetings from Norway :-D
You probably dont care but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all of the latest series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother for the last few days :)
Just bought this bad boy with Marshall 1982 AJH 4x12 slanted cab - (Jimi Hendrix limited edition cab) and 16 ohm HotPlate included. Over the moon... Thanks for the video.
Aloha Johan! Man, let me tell you Braddah....it doesn’t matter what you play, you simply have the MOJO in your bones....everything you play and play through sounds awesome. Some have it many don’t....you GOT IT Brah!! Slowly, I am getting through all your videos. As always, Mahalo nui loa for sharing Johan. You were born to play and share with the world your Blessing!
your video's audio quality is absolutely THE BEST! i would bet you could make one of those battery 9v powered micro toy amps sound good LOL. because of your videos im saving up for a marshall
In every video you are playing guitar in , you have never gotten a bad tone ! I think you might have missed your calling Johan . You should be on a world tour right now ! excellent playing and tone . cheers.
+Gabriel Castellar that's the Super Distortion pickup for you, called that because it's sheer output drives these old cleaner amps into full blown overdrive really fast :)
After watching a bunch of videos, especially yours, including this one, I bought it and it arrived yesterday along with a Marshall 1960AV (celestion vintage 30s). Loving it and its going to only sound better as the speakers break in! Thanks for the videos!
Johan, I had a regular printed circuit board 1987 RI and I replaced the guts with a Metropolous hand wired board and Mercury output transformer. I had a 1960 with the Heritage Greenbacks. That thing would melt your face at 3-4. You couldn't be in the same room with the damn thing. LOL One of the absolute best tones I got out of it was with a '52 Tele Ri with Lindy Fralin Blues Specials and RS Guitarworks guts. It was like James Gang era Joe Walsh had shown up drunk in my living room and played badly but the SOUND!!!!!! The perfect amp if you are playing a room big enough not to sterilize yourself when you turn it up. I only had one other amp that worked that well with ANY guitar you plugged in and that was the 1957 hand wired low power tweed Twin RI so it was a different, but equally glorious vibe.
Johan !...........I had one like this and installed a Marstran output in ,think it was the128 and not the 139 ,...and it was heaven !!!...........what a difference it made !! 3D Complex like it should be !...........I think that my tech at the time lowered the Bright cap value but not sure, It had very good tubes in also ,.............I still kick myself for letting it go! Cheers !
I'm looking at one exactly like this (presuming this is the one with the bypassable effects loop on the rear panel) and I think this video sold me on it. Sounds so great. I'm going to have to unload my Orange OR120 now.
Now that's pure tone - I want this tone already but my Blackstar HT20 combo running through my mesa vertical 2x12 is sensational for the money but I want your tone when I have $$$$

As always, amazing tone. And that Super distortion sounds amazing.
wow..it breaks up that fast? is that normal? I heard a lot of guys clip the bright cap to tame that gain..i didn't realize it was this gainy...was the original like this? thanks
Sounds good sir . I've see about every amp and every mod on you tube and I have to say the Rockstah amps mod 5 is the all around best. Mark Abrahamian of Rockstah passed away unfortunately but he would go over the entire circuitry, not just add a master volume. I hope to have a mod like that someday. But good jammin sir!
awesome !! but i have some doubts abouts it. if i put a boost(volume boost) in the fx loop when the amp its already at 3/4 of the way(volume 1 at 3 o clock), it will be louder or just more distorted?
With the volume at 1-3 o'clock, you get some good squish, and still, have a little bit of headroom left. I had a 1987x and a 1959SLP, both of which I ran with a THD hotplate, and typically had my volume around 2-o'clock. Running that hot, with an attenuator, and using a boost in the front gave me a decent lead boost (volume and saturation), but it wasn't an insane boost in volume, due to most of the headroom being used from running the amp so hot.
you could try putting a volume pad/pedal in the fx loop and running the amp SUPER hot (think Van Halen). This way, you can click the pad on for rhythm tones (the pad will reduce signal hitting the power amp), and click it off for lead tones. You could also toss a good OD like a tubescreamer, OCD, or soul food in the front with a little but of volume and gain dialed in to really kick the amp in the face, on top of diming it.
I had a PCB JTM45 RI. Also a fine amp. You get that rectifier "sag" with that amp that you don't really get with the 1987. My JTM would really get any louder above 4 or 5, just nastier. It also didn't have the grunt to drive a 4 x 12 with modern high power speakers. If I was going to put together the "perfect" setup with a handwired JTM 45 RI/Replica,, I would most certainly consider a 2 x 12 setup like Johan is using loaded with Heritage G12H30's. I had one of those in my Soultone18 watt clone and it kicks ass.
Hi Johan, I have that amp and it's killer... But mine really hiss a lot on the bright channel, and the presence knob make some "woofy" noise when I turn it, do you have the same issue?
hello Johan, how do you get this great sound out of 1987x? Do you use any pedal or post effects? I just got a 1987x. I crank it and record with a m160 and play through a vintage 30 speaker and the guitar is yamaha sg1820 but I can not even come closer to this sound. Any recommendation would be highly appreciated!!!! Thanks man!!!
+Sahan Ulgen Hi Sahan! Glad you like the tone! The most important element to this tone is the speaker. I'm using Celestion Greenbacks with Pulsonic cones. Cheers Johan
Thank you very much for your very quick and kind help man!!! I will try with those speakers in future. By the way just to let you know, I love allllllll your videos and learned great things from them, they are far more useful and informative then any I watched on youtube. Thanks for everything!!!
Hello Johan, just a quick question. Celestion has two models g12h75 and g12h55. Which one would you consider more close to the pulsonic cone speakers that you use in this video? Any other recommendation would be appreciated! Thanks a lot
Hi Johan, do you know what's the sound impact with the cathode circuit of the bright channel which is not the same as the original (2K7/680n) ? Thanks !
Sounds remarkably good! I had one from 1992 and that amp was amazing. The harmonics, feedback and tone were all there, esp with good tubes. Sold it to a guy that had to have a *better* Mercury Magnetics output transformer, so I swapped it in, and the tone was sterile and modern. He likes it and I have the OT for a future clone build!
Good sounding amp, Johan :-) A keeper, right? Hmm... I looked at the schematics for this amp, and got a possible explanation for the early breakup on the bright input: cathode resistor on that triode is 820 Ohms just like it is on the normal input! That will give roughly 3 dB more gain between 80 and approx. 220 Hz compared to using "standard" 2,7kOhm resistor there. And will give it some more low mid and bass to work with. The 4,7nF "bright cap" at the volume pot is responsible for the quick volume rise, that can easily be corrected by swapping it for a 100-470pF cap instead. Keep rockin'!
The nowadays 1987x are reissues of the circuit with split cathode and big bright cap... they probably have little NFB, something like 100k @ 4or 8 ohms... that’s why this amp is so crunchy and responsive! I love it an Johan makes everything sound super, but if I’d own one of those I’d mod it to 1986 specs for sure! Rock on
I'm confused. It appears you are using a hot plate. So are you referring to the change on the attenuator in the change in Volume or on the amp volume knob. Honestly I don't hear much difference between the two on the youtube video. I just saw the blinking lights on the hot plate and assumed you have it engaged. I have that attenuator for my JTM45 reissue so it caught my eye. Any response is greatly appreciated! Cheers!
Hi! The volumes refers to the amp, bright channel. The hotplate had the same settings throughout the video. This amps distorts almost right away. Cheers Johan
Hi, Johan, nice video! Let me ask you... I have a 1987X 2005 and had to substitute the 3 preamp tubes. I put all TungSol in V1, V2 and V3. I'm not satisfied with the results... Much bright, a little of "fizz" on the overdrive. But, all the way, I have another Marshall amps and like to use TungSol just to get a little more sustains, gain and brightness. What you recommend to change this situation? Best regards!
+Johan Segeborn Using 2X12 Greenbacks... I have impression that the V2 tube (EQ) is pushing a little too much with TungSol... I don't know, LOL!! The amp sounds different than before, less "creamy"... That's the dilemma... I love TungSol!
I have the same amp...run it full on with SG standard through Torpedo Live and still can't get this tasty distortion you have...time to change pickups then? :)
You videos never disappoint Have you ever done a demo on the jcm 2000 TSL ? .It gets a lot of hate on marshall forums but I completely LOVE mine.Maybe I got a magic one. And thoughts on it ?
Johan, I have to know. Is that 2x12 the same dimensions as the 2045, just on its end, rather than side? I have had several 2045, and two of the 1x12 that went with the 20 watt setups, and they were pretty much the same size. I am very curious to know the dimensions, like the depth of that cabinet, :) It sure sounds pretty, huh? Keep having fun, all these vids are great for us gear nuts.
I'm thinking about buying this amp because it's cheaper than the 1959 SLP. Is there any difference between the 1987x and the 1959 SLP or is the 1987c just a 50watt version of the 100watt 1959 SLP? I love the tone you get from the SLP and if the 1987x is kind of the same thing should I go for that one or save up to the SLP? Ha det gött! :)
They're both great amps. Marshall states that the 1987x is aggresively voiced, which I like. The SLP is more percussive and has more bass though. The 1987x is certainly good enough for anybody. Ha det gött du med! :-D Göteborgare?
+Johan Segeborn Alright thank you for the answer!
/Thomas
Tjena Thomas, jo micken bidrar men den distar i princip direkt i high level inputen. Kul att du gillade demon. Jag älskade stärkaren, så den kommer att få mycket speltid framöver. Hälsningar Johan
Hey Johan-thanks for the Review (i recently asked you to do one on the 1987x....) I myselfe own a very beat-up but great sounding 1987x and play it as my main amp.... Great "Zeppelin-like-tones".... What so you think ist the main difference betreten the 1959 (slp/Hw) and the 1987x? As far as i know the 1987x breaks up faster.....?! Greetings from Germany!
+henning Kraft Yeah it breaks up even faster than the 1959HW. I think the sound is a bit more nasal and compressed than the 1959. Cheers from Gothenburg!
Thanks! Yeah, on Volume 4 its already like a cranked Plexi. It does semi distorted sounds so good. The 1987x is very aggressive sounding, even at low volumes, I love it. It's feels more nasal than the 1959, but I need to have them side by side to tell. Cheers
+Johan Segeborn Yeah the 1987x is really a crunch machine :) Can you get a clean tone with that amp ? Volume at 1 and you already breaking up... Maybe the volume knob on the guitar can help.
I LOVE the clean tone on this amp... though I'm running the amp on 1 fed to a 1960A cab, with a Seymour Duncan Jazz neck position on a Les Paul with the volume way rolled back :D
Just awesome! I might buy my bandmates 1987x after hearing this. A question about attenuators: I have a Weber MiniMass 50w. How will it do with the 1987x 50w? What will happen if I max the amp into the MiniMass? They say you should go for att attanuator with more wattage than the amp, but this is what I´ve got right now.
Thanks! If you want to attenuate it down to bedroom volume level you’ll need the Mass 100 for a 50W amp. But if you’re only gonna knock of say 8dB your attenuator will be fine. Cheers
Is it a question of how much I attenuate or how much I crank the amp? Can I crank the amp but h Just attenuate a bit or is it impossible to crank the amp with a 50w attenuator?
@@albecenex4890 It really depends on the pickups and guitar volume. I have the same amp and it starts breaking up almost immediately with my SG equipped with hot Lundgren M8, but no so much with my strat standard pickups.
only pick up output can't clip the tubes if you close at 4 volume the signal circuit. ok for crunchy tone ma not this full distorsion . This amp it's a old circuit ,not a high gain, for full distorsion need full volume or a boost before input amp
I just got a 1987x and it seems top have no gain. I heard you have to crank it to get some. It's as clean as can be at room volume. So I bought a JHS little black amp box to put in the effects loop so I could crank the amp but then bring the volume back down. I was on 10 and hardly had gain. I then noticed the JHS little black amp box says it is NOT an attenuator. I have no idea if that contributes to it. So I bought a real attenuator but it hasn't arrived yet. Does this seem weird to you? 50 watt 1987x, 1977 Les Paul Artisan, 4x12 25 watt greenbacks.
The classic rock sound. At what levels do you have to play it to get some distortion and sustain? I notice some people have the volume on 10, is this ok for the valves etc? I can recall someone saying it doesn't affect the tubes at all as they run the same all the time, even on standby. Is this true Johan? Love your videos some of the best on UA-cam. Great stuff man.
+Johan Segeborn Sounds more like your metal panel 70's heads, I think. Either way, killer tone that proves Marshall's still making killer amps (reissues)!
+Lynge Sailor Thanks, I have a very limited experience of pedals I'm afraid, but since it distorts so early it may not be suited as a pedal platform. Cheers!
+rocxNroll It could depend on the output of the pickups of your guitar. Or your amp may be modded. And maybe the circuit of the amp has changed somewhat over the years. Cheers
How are you getting that much gain using only one channel and not jumping channels? Remember in my other video i said you weren't getting ENOUGH gain (HW)...this is crazy!!!! So Volume 2 is off and no PPIMV?? I gotta get me one of these...
+Brian Keller I really hope you see these...that is beyond sick gain...way more than my HW...I'm not understanding your explanation of your settings, especially the volume/channel usage and settings. If you could articulate that, I would be forever grateful cause this is nuts
Hi Brian! I'm only using channel 1 and the volume is on 1 and 3 in the video. The EQ knobs are all set on 5. I'm playing the same amp on volume 8 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/kv6IrhZD46Y/v-deo.html Cheers Johan
Brian Keller yeah my 77 1987 is super clean at this level. I currently have a 120pf Bright cap which is part of it. But when I had a 4700pf it was still mild at 1.
+Dennis Nilssen Hi, only a couple of times. They work great for slight attenuation but less so for heavy attenuation, as I have understood it, based on my very limited experience.
Hi Johan, great video as always! Is this amp modified in any way, or is it "out of the box"? Also, how much did the attenuator lower the volume in this recording? I'm a noobie when it comes to "real" tube amps and attenuators, so please forgive me if any of the questions are pointless, ha ha! Cheers!
+Lynx Brickstein Hi! No they are good questions. This amp is completely stock without mods. Without the attenuator it would be around 120dB with these settings and this was at bedroom volume level, slightly above 90dB I think. So I knocked of about 30dB with the attenuator. Cheers Johan
+Johan Segeborn Reason for asking is the schematic online for the 1987X dated 13-5-93 non FX loop model shows 5881. The later 1987XL EL34. Love your vids, Cracking walnuts with your skull crunch.
Thanks! I'm gonna compare the 1987x to a 1977 2204 in an upcoming clip. The later JMP sounds more like New wave of British heavy metal and the 1987x sounds very much old Kiss and Zeppelin. But both amps can do both genres great. Cheers
You have the best tone, the best amps, the best guitars, the best videos and probably the best channel on UA-cam. Specially for a Marshall lover.
I love it! Greetings from Norway :-D
+Shafferhead Thanks my friend! Greetings from Gothenburg Sweden!
Don't forget the collection of vintage shorts-second to none! (just kidding Johan, another excellent Marshall/Les Paul video as usual).
You probably dont care but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all of the latest series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother for the last few days :)
@Bronson Vance Yea, I have been watching on Instaflixxer for since november myself :)
This could be the best distortion/drive i've ever heard
That makes me very glad to hear!
Just bought this bad boy with Marshall 1982 AJH 4x12 slanted cab - (Jimi Hendrix limited edition cab) and 16 ohm HotPlate included. Over the moon... Thanks for the video.
After skipping forward it took me a while to realize that this wasn't a comparison video and all of those heavenly tones came from one amp... Wow!
Got one of these 2 years ago and I play it everyday. Thanks for all the Marshall videos
+Jeremiah Mountain Thanks Jeremiah, maybe the greatest contemporary Marshall amp, Cheers
Aloha Johan! Man, let me tell you Braddah....it doesn’t matter what you play, you simply have the MOJO in your bones....everything you play and play through sounds awesome. Yeah me to, i might get one of these 1987x amps! I just hope they don't go out of production like everything else im looking to buy
Yeah same I'm saving up for a JMP
In every video you are playing guitar in , you have never gotten a bad tone !
I think you might have missed your calling Johan .
You should be on a world tour right now !
excellent playing and tone .
cheers.
+old school Thanks, that's very nice of you :-)
Amazing. Definitely will keep an eye out for one of these (used). They pop up every now and then around here.
Thanks! Marshall has still got it for sure
I'm amazing by how much gain is on tap for this amp. And it has a really tight low end. Something the older plexi's sometimes don't have. Great job!
*amazed
+Gabriel Castellar Thank Gabriel, yeah this one's a great reissue
+Gabriel Castellar that's the Super Distortion pickup for you, called that because it's sheer output drives these old cleaner amps into full blown overdrive really fast :)

+Rick McCargar Glad that the videos were put to some use! :-) it's really a great amp. Cheers
Beautiful tone with a little touch of Bass.
Thanks Gabriel!
very inspiring~! cool playing / guitar voice/tone
Thanks Jim!
Sounds like it has teeth. THANKS JOHAN!!
I LOVE that description :-D Thanks

I'm looking at one exactly like this (presuming this is the one with the bypassable effects loop on the rear panel) and I think this video sold me on it. Sounds so great. I'm going to have to unload my Orange OR120 now.
ahhhhhh johan good too see a man than loves his work,,,,another cool vid cheers,,,
Awesome Playing and Recording!
Thanks Chris!
Got one.... they’re a powerhouse.
I have a 2013 Reissue - outstanding amp.
This was awesome friend, You just got yourself a new subscriber man.
+James Florin Thanks bro! Welcome to the channel! Cheers Johan
Sounds heavenly.
Now that's pure tone - I want this tone already but my Blackstar HT20 combo running through my mesa vertical 2x12 is sensational for the money but I want your tone when I have $$$$
As always, amazing tone. And that Super distortion sounds amazing.
Thanks! Glad to hear that. Yeah that pickup turned out great in this guitar. Cheers
Cherry bust Les Paul, great sounding Marshall, Kiss inspired riffs, yeah!
Same as Ian MacKaye
Sounds really good! Lots of clarity. I love that kind of glassy, brash sound with humbuckers. My Vox definitely can't do that! Need a Marshall for it!
+Zachary Drummond Thanks Zachary! Yeah that balanced brightness is very Marshally! Cheers Johan
Tat is 1 HELLUVA BEAST of a MARSHALL !!
very nice sounding !!! Your videos are great. Kiss rules !!!
Thanks Alexandre! They do indeed rule! Cheers
That sounds amazing.
Thanks Johan this thing sounds brutal!
Thanks! Brutal is the ultimate compliment!
Keep em coming i really like your videos very entertaining for gear nerds like me.
I can totally here Ride the Lightning oozing from the first section, especially with an SD-1 or some type of booster
+Preston Spicer Thanks :-)
My favorite Marshall !
Cheers Bob!
Sounds great! I've wondered about mixing 75 and 55Hz speakers. Sounds like a great speaker mix
Thanks! It's convenient to be able to choose which to close mic. Cheers
wow..it breaks up that fast? is that normal? I heard a lot of guys clip the bright cap to tame that gain..i didn't realize it was this gainy...was the original like this? thanks
Great demo as usual 👍. I just saw Buckcherry tonight and Keith sounded killer. I think he was using one of these bad boys 👌

Another suggestions : jtm45hw vs jtm45 2245 (pcb reissue), Friedman be100 and 50w small box compare to your Marshall ?
Good idea!
And maybe some really expensive Germino amps too.
I actually played a Germino with the same setup here, so they're compareable
ua-cam.com/video/SeL25mbC8lc/v-deo.html
I had a PCB JTM45 RI. Also a fine amp. You get that rectifier "sag" with that amp that you don't really get with the 1987. My JTM would really get any louder above 4 or 5, just nastier. I think this is the one steve hackett use for the recent years. 🖖Johan
Youll be legend
Hi Johan, I have that amp and it's killer... But mine really hiss a lot on the bright channel, and the presence knob make some "woofy" noise when I turn it, do you have the same issue?
Great sound! Not a terribly big fan of the straight cab sound, but it's still awesome!
Thanks Billy!
@johan segeborn, I have a question, Can 1987X MK2 reissue , can be used as bass guitar amp or not ? How does it sound ?
hello Johan, how do you get this great sound out of 1987x? Do you use any pedal or post effects? I just got a 1987x. Hi Johan, do you know what's the sound impact with the cathode circuit of the bright channel which is not the same as the original (2K7/680n) ? Thanks !
Hi, a lower resistance means more gain. I have seen 1987X with both 2700 and 820 there
So it's means, the 1987 have more gain than the one with 2K7/680n ?
1987 had 820/680 before '69 but 2700/680 after. I have seen both versions on 1987x schedules
Sounds remarkably good! I had one from 1992 and that amp was amazing. The harmonics, feedback and tone were all there, esp with good tubes.

Mats Frånlund I have seen the schematic and see a 2k7. Don’t know where you see the 820. Link ?
in this amps all 2 resistors on v1 chatode are 0.820 k . I have it …

Cheers Johan
has great gain with that pickup,, did you ever bridge the channels on that amp?
+DANTHETUBEMAN Thanks! I have, but it takes some of the attack away, so I'd rather change something else in the chain. Cheers
Nasty little beast - just like a cranked Marshall is supposed to sound - nice one, Johan!
+JacknCocaine Thanks, yeah they still got it for sure
Holy shit that sounds awesome!
Thanks Tuomas!
I really like yours demo.
Just a question, when we see an attenuator, I suppose you use it?
Or You play at bedroom level?
Hi, Johan, nice video! Let me ask you... I have a 1987X 2005 and had to substitute the 3 preamp tubes. I put all TungSol in V1, V2 and V3. I'm not satisfied with the results... Much bright, a little of "fizz" on the overdrive. But, all the way, I have another Marshall amps and like to use TungSol just to get a little more sustains, gain and brightness. What you recommend to change this situation? Best regards!
+MrDPallone Thanks! I actually have the original Marshall Tungsols in my 1987X and like it. What speakers are you using?
+Johan Segeborn Using 2X12 Greenbacks... I have impression that the V2 tube (EQ) is pushing a little too much with TungSol... I don't know, LOL!! The amp sounds different than before, less "creamy"... That's the dilemma... I love TungSol!
+MrDPallone Have you tried different biases?
Thanks, Johan... I will try. All the best!!
Perikado Thanks, man!!
natural drive
Wow that sounds like a bluesrock machine to me 👍
+Leif Ångqvist thanks, yeah Marshall has still got it!
Great demo! One question though: when you say " All knobs on 12 o'clock except Vol 1=1" or "Vol 1=4", do you mean positions 1 o'clock and 4 o'clock?
Thanks, no the volume was at 1 out of 10. No cleans there.. :-)
It breaks up nicely at 1 and 4!
Yeah, it does crunch better than the 100W I think
@@JohanSegeborn there is so little clean headroom in this beast?
Johan what setting is the THD Hotplate on for this demo?
Hi Mike, it's on -16dB with the continous knob at 2 o'clock
Wow sounds great! Thanks for the info.
What was the switches set?
I have the same amp...run it full on with SG standard through Torpedo Live and still can't get this tasty distortion you have...time to change pickups then? :)
Really sounds great. You have played many great originals... How do you feel this compares to an early 70s 50w?
I think they're close, this one is a bit brighter and has more gain though
best sound ever
+Thomas Janssen Yeah they did a great Reissue with the 1987X
You videos never disappoint
Have you ever done a demo on the jcm 2000 TSL ?
.It gets a lot of hate on marshall forums but I
completely LOVE mine.Maybe I got a magic one.
And thoughts on it ?
+robert rogers Hi, I've played one and I really liked it. A demo of the TSL is indeed long overdue. Cheers Johan
Johan, I have to know. Is that 2x12 the same dimensions as the 2045, just on its end, rather than side? I have had several 2045, and two of the 1x12 that went with the 20 watt setups, and they were pretty much the same size.
I am very curious to know the dimensions, like the depth of that cabinet, :)
It sure sounds pretty, huh? Keep having fun, all these vids are great for us gear nuts.
+soundboy57 Hi! External measurements: 30cm deep and 66 cm wide and the same height as a regular 4x12. Cheers Johan
Interesting. Thanks!
/Thomas
Tjena Thomas, jo micken bidrar men den distar i princip direkt i high level inputen. Kul att du gillade demon. Jag älskade stärkaren, så den kommer att få mycket speltid framöver. Hälsningar Johan
Monster tone!!
vol 1 and 4 is the real level or 13 and 16 o'clock?
Good rock sound 🔊
+Mark Wooly Thanks Mark! :-)
his tone reminds me of early acdc
Thanks, you make my day! :-)
What is being used for the reverb in this vid?
Have you tried the same amp but with he David Bray mod?
Is that one hand wired your playing?Cheers
Hi Chad, no it's a standard PCB
Hey Johan-thanks for the Review (i recently asked you to do one on the 1987x....)
I myselfe own a very beat-up but great sounding 1987x and play it as my main amp....
NIce! How does the 1987 feel in comparison to the 1959 in your opinion? Probably a bit hotter than a vintage one, no?
Cheers!
Hi Sylvain, it almost breaks up right away with this pickup
I LOVE the clean tone on this amp... though I'm running the amp on 1 fed to a 1960A cab, with a Seymour Duncan Jazz neck position on a Les Paul with the volume way rolled back :D
I love the videos you put together. Great tones. Have you put your video clips on Instagram?
Ok I have to ask Johan..Do you own "all" of the amps, cabs, and guitars you show in your videos?
+John Spina unfortunately no :-) I have very nice friends ;-)
I need friends like that! ;o)
Cheers
Johan Segeborn thanx! I will probably use it to get the volume down a bit for rehearsals and stuff.
Is it a question of how much I attenuate or how much I crank the amp? Can I crank the amp but h
Just attenuate a bit or is it impossible to crank the amp with a 50w attenuator?
No, you can crank it. You just can’t attenuate all the way down to bedroom volume level. I’m for instance often using my 100W Super Lead with Mass 100
There is something weird with your 1987x. It wasn't supposed to have a crunch sound on volume 1!!!!!!!
and full distorsion on volume 4 ????? i have a 1987x.... for arrive at that distorsion volume must be over 5/6
@@albecenex4890 It really depends on the pickups and guitar volume.
By 1 and 4 he means “o’clock”
sounds good to me!
Thanks! :-)
Thanks! Check out this link for tube operation:
www.groovetubes.com/support/#replacement
I'm gonna do a clip about that very subject soon.
Look forward to it.
Killer tone and playing! Sounds as good as any vintage Marshall, to me anyway! Bet the Hotplate is knocking off some of the shrill highs too?
Thanks Andy! Though I'm afraid that the Hotplate adds highs in this case. Cheers
+Johan Segeborn Sounds more like your metal panel 70's heads, I think. Either way, killer tone that proves Marshall's still making killer amps (reissues)!
They do indeed!
Hey. How does this amp handle pedals? Maybe an OCD for a little extra punch/gain? Thanks for the great video!
+Lynge Sailor Thanks, I have a very limited experience of pedals I'm afraid, but since it distorts so early it may not be suited as a pedal platform. Cheers!
Awesome Johan! It breaks up quite early, fairly gritty even on 1?
1 o'clock not 1 of 10
Kyle Adams ? Read the settings properly!
why my 1987x with volume on 1 it's perfect clean? And u have a great crunch!
+rocxNroll It could depend on the output of the pickups of your guitar. Or your amp may be modded. And maybe the circuit of the amp has changed somewhat over the years. Cheers
Def Leopard in a box!
Att svära i kyrkan men… har du testat Amp-1 Bluguitar??? Lite nyfiken själv.
Tjena Leif! Nej men jag ska kolla in den när tillfälle ges! :-) ha det!
How are you getting that much gain using only one channel and not jumping channels? Remember in my other video i said you weren't getting ENOUGH gain (HW)...this is crazy!!!! So Volume 2 is off and no PPIMV?? I gotta get me one of these...
+Brian Keller I mean dude, that's killing an 800...wth is going on in that setup??
+Brian Keller I really hope you see these...that is beyond sick gain...way more than my HW...I'm not understanding your explanation of your settings, especially the volume/channel usage and settings. If you could articulate that, I would be forever grateful cause this is nuts
Yeah, it's got more gain than the original for sure!
Hi Brian! I'm only using channel 1 and the volume is on 1 and 3 in the video. The EQ knobs are all set on 5.
I'm playing the same amp on volume 8 in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/kv6IrhZD46Y/v-deo.html
Cheers Johan
Brian Keller yeah my 77 1987 is super clean at this level. I currently have a 120pf Bright cap which is part of it. But when I had a 4700pf it was still mild at 1.
I wanna come visit you, hang out all day playing these great amps.
+Skully's Woodshed If you're in Sweden just drop by! \m/
You're awesome Johan that you'd invite any of us to your place!
Ever tried a marshall powerbrake instead of the THDs ?
+Dennis Nilssen Hi, only a couple of times. They work great for slight attenuation but less so for heavy attenuation, as I have understood it, based on my very limited experience.
Oh okay, thank you!
Great, thanks! I'm seriously considering getting one of these now, with an attenuator of course.
Is this the 5881 or USA El34, ? Its awesome.
+Zoli Semanate Thanks Zoli! It's the stock Marshall EL34 tubes. The 2245/JTM45 has the 5881 tubes, Cheers Johan
+Johan Segeborn Reason for asking is the schematic online for the 1987X dated 13-5-93 non FX loop model shows 5881. The later 1987XL EL34. Love your vids, Cracking walnuts with your skull crunch.
Thanks Zoli! Cheers
johann u look so robotic ,,,is it that cold in sweden?
Haha, unfortunately yes :-)
That much gain on 1? These amps are beasts!
+Lars Sig Yeah, and unlike many other Marshalls it has a great semi distorted tone
How would that compare to a 1979 2204 JMP? as all your videos, amazing job man. Cheers from Catalunya!
Thanks! I'm gonna compare the 1987x to a 1977 2204 in an upcoming clip. The later JMP sounds more like New wave of British heavy metal and the 1987x sounds very much old Kiss and Zeppelin. But both amps can do both genres great. Cheers
Damn... I need to save up some money!
Perfect :0)
It sounds more like a really smooth jcm 800
+Andrei Tuico Yeah, it's got a bit more gain than the originals
Jesus christ that’s so much gain but good that u dont gotta crank it to get the tones
