  • This is a Tier list that people have been asking for for quite some time. I didn't want to make it because I play Civ 6 in a slightly alternative way, and being honest I didn't want to put my opinions out there in the wider sphere for people to judge until I was certain I had a good handle on how everyone played.
    After 3,000 hours of Deity and a complete Deity hall of fame, as well as building a significant YT channel based on Civ 6 play... I can finally say I'm ready to submit my list.
    Remember to keep all thoughts and opinions kind and constructive. You won't agree with me, I can guarentee it, on all choices. That's OK!
    Anyway, this video took me a LONG time to make so please do help me to spread it around. I'd love for people to see it!

      honestly? I think you're one of the 2 or 3 best single player Civ 6 players around. You play in a different style than most (I don't know if I've ever seen you win by Domination, for example, though I'm sure you've done so at least once), but you win consistently even with ridiculous challenges or mods thrown in your way. So yeah, I think anyone who refuses to at least listen carefully and respectfully to your opinions deserves nothing but to be ignored.

    • @harjutapa
      @harjutapa 2 роки тому +1

      And like, as one example, your play is what made me realize how incredibly good pillaging is. I'd been watching Civ 6 UA-camrs for years, and no one else had ever emphasized it, or even really USED it much.

      Just having watched the first seven minutes your explanations really remind me of filthyrobots standards back in civ 5 to a degree. How strong are the bonuses and how consistent are they. All around amazing like civ 5 Persia? Top tier. Amazing bonus but very fragile (Germany in civ 5) or inconsistent (Spain)? No tier one for you.

      So with Kupe "resources can't be harvested". That's actually not including woods, rainforest, and marsh. That only applies to bonus resources (since those are the only resources that can be harvested without mods) I'm fairly certain I have chopped rainforests and marsh with Kupe to increase appeal. It's just things like wheat, cows, copper, stone that I couldn't get rid of. Kupe can also crush features by putting districts on them, but not resources.

    That was a fantastic tier list! Ditching the S-F ranking made this much better. No shade to other lists, but once you've seen one, you've just about seen them all with just a handful of civs shifting around.
    I almost didn't watch this, but I'm so glad I did. Not only was it a refreshing take on the concept, but all the time you spent going through each of these civs has made me want to play some I haven't or didn't really appreciate where their strengths fit. Your content is always delightful and original and this monumental effort was no different. Thanks so much - off to go try out a new civ!

    I know it's a time commitment, but I would like to see a Marathon speed game. It can uploaded once a week or once a fortnight, as a side game alongside your main playthrough, but I think it would be interesting to see what happens when the game is forced to spend more time in each era.

      The problem with marathon and epic is that production is slowed down as well. So nothing really changes, other than just adding a bunch of idle turns. Need to install a mod that keeps production the same to have that desired effect.

    Great thinking. I like your ranking criteria - general vs situational - makes a lot more sense than just S-F. I have a few minor points:
    1. Maori can chop forests and jungles, and drain marshes. What they can't do is get rid of bonus resources.
    2. To me, Mali is situationally excellent - you need that desert but you always get the first pantheon, which has to be the desert folklore holy site adjacency booster. Then with Work Ethic you can have +16 production per holy site. This allows you to get your districts and wonders quickly and then you use your mega cash to pay for buildings and units.
    3. The other day I was doing Eleanor France on that hugest YANM. I started my conquest in Austria and ended the game having taken, without a fight, all the Balkans, Asia Minor, Italy, Palestine/Syria, Arabia, Egypt plus involuntary acquisition of every city state on the way. If your criterion was "fun" I'd rank her pretty near the top.
    4. By definition, Korea is "situationally" whatever due to the seowon, more so than Greece. So too is Scythia - I think you fudged it when you said they could always conquer a nearby city if they didn't spawn near horses...
    5. If only Brazil didn't remove jungle when you place a district... it would be excellent.
    6. You forgot to mention... that the free cavalry Byzantium gets are forever free of maintenance costs - you can upgrade them to tanks and not worry about oil or global warming... and Gaul gets men at arms with iron working.

    If you're ever lucky enough to play a Nubia game with a lot of desert floodplains, Lady of the Reeds and Marshes plus the nubian pyramids will make them all worth a minimum of 4 food, 2 production, and 2 faith. The tiles become so juicy.

    1:46 I have no problem if you don't wanna play every game on deity, sometimes it's fun to dial it back to emperor and seeing what you can get away with. I'll readily admit that I opened the video, skipped to the end to see the list, thought, "whoa, that's different," and then had to watch the whole thing. Your focus on Civs that have greater flexibility makes this list super unique and helpful (I've had so many instances where I've endlessly re-rolled my starts, trying to get a perfect area for leaders like Bull Moose Teddy, Pachacuti, etc.). After seeing your analysis, I definitely want to go back and try out Civs that I'd largely dismissed and to revisit a bunch that don't get as much love as they deserve.

    Fantastic list, almost everything makes complete sense.
    My only note that stood out a bit, wouldn't one be able to make the case that Canada is situationally excellent. If you get a map with low/no appeal or tundra near you most of your bonuses are unavailable.
    Thank you for this useful and very instructive list!

      Casual multiplayer with friends rather than deity singleplayer so not the same thing, but my last Khmer game was an outrageous blowout and while I attributed that to luck (4p game where I stole one player's early settler while another opponent got wrecked by a bad spawn and the third went all-in on religion to no avail) the Khmer's own abilities absolutely set up the snowball. I genuinely forgot how much faith I had because I was just focusing on infrastructure, suddenly pulled an apostle wall out of thin air when I needed it, and then my yields were going brrr so hard that I literally gained about as much culture per turn from Antananarivo suzerainty as at least one player did total. It was genuinely like I was playing against the Settler AI rather than three non-inept humans. And I'm not even that good! I mostly play on Prince!!

    Agree with your opinions on most of the civ's! India's Dharma ability is very underrated, his 2 extra missionary charges work well with Scripture 50% more powerful charges (with printing tech) and his 100% religious trade pressure meaning he will always be a threat religious wise (even without missionaries) making him just outstanding and a beast. I'd dare say religion is the building block for all game types, it's extremely powerful even for nonreligious games. I wish they would buff Indian Leader skills, especially Gandhi. Also love Khmer, very good civ. Good tier list!

    I've been playing Babylon straight for the last month on deity and I agree with the points about teching beyond your ability to upgrade such as unlocking Lineman by killing a unit with a knight and thus soft locking you out of square rigging which require musketmen (solution is to levy). They can warp the world's barbarians, like building an oil well in 1500 BC and suddenly there are barb spec ops spawning next to pikeman, hilarious. Babylon focused is beyond busted, even above crusading Byzantium knights in almost all situations and even better if settled on a river. Their only odd quirk is that for some reason they seemed to struggle with getting into tier 2 government and they really really really need to kill 3 barbarians and be able to build an iron mind to get going otherwise they are in very rough spot, though their rough spot is better then Byzantium without a religion.

      Just a heads up if you didn't know but the 'own 2 bombard' and 3 musketman eurekas are busted right now, they've been changed to trebuchets and line infantry respectively but for some reason the text description of the eureka wasn't changed to reflect that. That was just a random side note, your point is still valid though for sure

    Thanks for the video. It is both informative and insightful, and I tend to agree with you where you disagree with the conventional wisdom. That said, I would rank Babylon and the Maya higher, the former for the reasons in my earlier comment, the latter because it is good at helping you survive the early game against Deity AI, and once well past the early game, superior human strategic ability lets you compensate for those 15% yield maluses.

    I tend to build industrial zones as the first district with Babylon. Mines are a good improvement anyway, so you would often get three of them very early, and industrial zones may be the first district you unlock. Unlike any other specialty district, they increase that one city's most important yield, production, while all the other specialty districts increase empire-wide yields like culture, gold, or faith, so there is a certain logic to building the zone it first. Other civs that have to wait until the Medieval to unlock can't build it first in their early cities, so you don't have the habit of building it early. It is true that Babylon can unlock the permission to build units, wonder, districts, and buildings eras ahead of everyone else, but struggle to take advantage because their cities are still stuck in those earlier eras in terms of their productive capacity. That's why Babylon is given the palgum, and why it should prioritize getting techs that boost tile yields, so it can get bigger and more productive cities quickly to sort of halfway compensate for the high costs of all the advanced era goodies it can unlock.

    • @matthewmanzi9504
      @matthewmanzi9504 2 роки тому +2

      My personal thought is Babylon is S tier once you play and get a strategy for them. Once you master them, they are the most broken Civ in the game.

    • @2gtomkins
      @2gtomkins 2 роки тому

      @@matthewmanzi9504Babylon is arguably the most over-powered civ, and you can win along just about any route using its gifts. My point is that taking full advantage of the ability it gives you to unlock at least selected techs earlier than even deity level AI competitors requires you to emphasize also pumping up your production point output early. Those advanced units, buildings, and wonders all have advanced price tags as well, so you need to get your yields up to try to match the higher cost in production points.

    Great list man. Really insightful. It's utterly mental that they have 3 French leaders and none of them are Napoleon. What's the deal? I think he's a great general but it's weird. I think the civ games were a) trying to be a bit more inclusive with the leaders (which I totally get and has taught me lots about people I would have never have known about before) and b) they try not to use the same ones every time - Napoleon was in a bunch of other civs - but yeah I would have expected him to pop up at some point!

    I couldn't figure out the Cree, so I played 5 or 6 games in a row with them. Having done so, I would put them as S tier in 1-player diety games. You talk about them being very middle of the road with no clear focus, but that's not true! The Cree are one of the best tall-focused civs in the game (if not the best). The housing from the mekewap and the fact it is essentially a mine that doesn't have to be built on hills, means your cities can grow very large, AND turn that growth into production pretty easily in the early to mid game. Their insane map/diplomatic visibility means they can easily meet every city state on the map very early on, then use their knowledge about the map, opponents, and city states to pick the best victory condition. The Cree can pick any victory condition (besides maybe domination) on any map and crush it. All you have to do is build tall and find the open lane to victory.
    **Also Poundmaker's ability benefits from both camps AND pastures. I never had any trouble in any of my games settling at least one city with 4-5 camps/pastures within three tiles.
    Anyway, loved the video. I agree with pretty much every other ranking. Thanks for putting in the time!

    You displayed a healthy attitude explaining that every civilization has value. Civ VI's balance is much better than Civ V, for instance: Civ V Gandhi at many times would punish the player's expansion, unlike in Civ VI where a civilization with yield trade-offs like the Maya offer unique ways to play. The more, the merrier.

    Previously I wasn't interested in India, since popular opinions kinda see them as boring and I don't really enjoy a religious game. But you just convinced me to start a new India game. Why didn't I think about this previously? Thanks!

      haha - I'm so glad you're up for giving them a go! that's what I love about Civ - it's sometimes being showed something a bit different that helps you to find a path that's good fun

    I'm glad someone actually acknoledges that the Aztecs are an incredibly powerful civ! My first game of civ 6 I played random on difficulty 2 and barely got a science win with them before the 500-turn limit (and didn't even use their abilities because I never declared war and forgot the builder thing was there), but now I'm consistently winning sub-300 on prince. I don't really like the higher difficulties as it feels like the AI just cheats, but I do have a couple deity games I'm playing at the time of writing just to see if I can win. Any tips if someone sees this would be appreciated

      @UrsaRyan  Рік тому

      For deity - just rememeber the advantage the AI has on you will get evened out over time. If you can survive till Atomic era, you'll mostly always win! Try larger maps with more space to expand and you may find it easier to survive the early games

    Just played ottomans on a naval map and the Barbary Corsair was hilarious. Hic sunt dracones and a great admiral and they had 8 movement, could have been 9 if I built the lighthouse, raid card in.... the amount of science, faith, gold, and culture I got in a typical turn was just absurd. I built 4 of em and took em to a different AI coast and declared war on everyone and just went to town. Was one of the most fun things I've ever done in game, so yeah, I can see why someone might say they are the best unit in the game.

      It's been a while since I filmed the series and yeah, I still think they are the best units in Civ. Nothing else can plunder so much resource for you so fast, they are insane!

    55:56 - Does Lithuanian Union only flip the religion if the tiles are culture bombed due to Golden Liberty, or does it work if you have the World Congress Resolution that causes all new districts to culture bomb?

      Any culture bomb works, even picking warrior monks and bombing with a holy site works.

    Good list overall. I liked the way you approached this with situational/general rankings as this better reflected the nature of the game. I think Babylon are undoubtedly generally excellent though. They do run into bottlenecks, especially given that their culture progression will be miles behind science, and eurekas become harder to get the later the game gets, which makes their science penalty really begin to hurt. However, the amount of early game momentum you get is ridiculous. The Maya are also deceptively strong - my fastest science victory was with them. Was a lucky spawn admittedly, but I'd bump them up a couple of tiers. I think you overrate the Aztecs. Their bonuses are nice, but nothing exceptional - +1 from luxuries isn't game changing usually, especially as lots of other civs have bonuses to combat strength that are often easier to get. Not convinced by India still. For me, they're still the weakest civ in the game, though you did an admirable job defending them. I get the potential strength of India, but it's slow and annoying to set up. It feels really inconvenient and awkward with lots of micromanaging. At the end of the day, what does it give you? Super-powered holy sites. The three best beliefs - choral music, feed the world and work ethic - are all great and of course it's really nice to take advantage of all of them, but it's going to take a good investment of time to get this. Stepwells suck too.

      Just a quick one - for India it's the amenities that religions give you which are the kickers - it's a guarenteed +3 in all cities in most games, if you're willing to micromanage - often more. They are very labour intensive but they are honestly just fantastic if you're willing to go the extra mile
