What happened to all the old videos? I can't see anything older than a year! I keep coming back here to reference the top ten videos to pick what to read :(
Read it as an original. I won't go into things, but LOVED it (80's/90's). Every time this comes up in the news (this year it has gotten quieter), I would think the same things. From out of nowhere you bring up an awesome ...errrr "subject". Great episode.
After over twenty years of working in mental health, sadly I have to say that there are literally thousands of people who given the right circumstances could do something terrible like this. That these people have access to books with disturbing content does not bother me. That these people could have access to guns, as they do in the US, is disturbing.
@@JaySun333 Fun fact: before Arnie took over the lead in Running Man, Superman himself, Christopher Reeve was supposed to play the main hero. It could have been a faithful adaptation of the book.
It's kind of pricey, given the rarity of the item these days. In case you have a kindle or something similar, I suggest you check "library genesis" out.
@@MediaDeathCult Huge King fan, so the debate is always there re Rage and his decision. A correct one I feel, because it was his own personal choice, befitting a sensible approach. Clearly it hasn't changed the horrendous issue playing out in the United States, so the argument remains about the folly of book banning but the video addresses the topic well. I really should run over to Discord, I'm missing out on the channel!!
I didn't mention this in the video, and don't mean to throw fuel on the fire, but King was in a financial position to pull the book, it was never going to make a dent in his wallet, possibly quite the opposite. I wonder if the same decision would have been made if Rage was his only successful novel?
@@MediaDeathCult no, I understand that, I was going off on a tangent slightly about that book and the debate in broader terms. It's true, would he have pulled it had it been that?, who knows. I wonder are there other novels that exist, similar to Rage, or even more divisive, that aren't on our wavelengths simply due to lack of popularity? Which are not linked in to the broader conversation with school shootings. A conversation for another day I suppose. (Patrick)
Nice video essay aside, where's the backlog content at, Cult Leader? We wanted to reminiscence good old times rewatching big ass book hauls and bookholic Moid dragging books around on a leash. Cheers!
Remaining books should have messages stamped in them which direct people who feel that may act out the story, to seek help. I do not know what psychological services exist in other countries but in Canada, the phone number 988 reaches a suicide support line. I have read that shooters have many similarities to those who have suicidal thoughts, so perhaps the same service could be used.
Though i usually hate censorship, i think it's cool of King to act out of what he felt was a moral responsibility. I can never fault a man who has morals (as long as he isn't using those morals to abuse and persecute people obviously). I would love to own a physical copy though
I'd totally forgotten that Rage was one of the 4 Bachmann books. The Long Walk was my favourite. Must have been an uncomfortable experience having your work of fiction claimed as a direct inspiration for actual death and mayhem. Let's hope there aren't any such incidents claiming this MDC video as a source material! Very interesting video Moid. 👍🔫🎬📚
The American library for the blind still has an audio version of the four early Richard Bachman novels. I downloaded it again after watching this video just in case of any censorship Shenanigans at the library for the blind.
I read Rage in the Bachman Books when I was about 15. I enjoyed it. That one, The Long Walk, and Apt Pupil from Different Seasons, were the books I considered to be King's darkest. I also remember watching the news after Columbine (just one state over) and wondering if the kids were acting out the plot of Rage. Wild book with a terrifying history. Great video looking at a rough topic, Moid!
I think it still has the reverse-effect. Rage is far more talked about than it's nature & quality deserves. It's a worse story (IMHO) than all the other stories in the Bachman Books, but it's possibly the most talked about because it was "banned".
What a tough subject to consider. Of course I don't think subjects should be taken off the table for consideration and discussion. But I have to ask myself if I think that those early incidents would have occurred if Rage hadn't been written, and I have to admit that I don't think they would have. I think that book inspired the incidents, and if it did, what kind of responsibility do those of us who create have? The only answer can be is that we continue to tell the truth as we see it, and not let even incidents like this stop us. Because damaged people will cause harm, and it's best to consider it before it happens, even if a few take it the wrong way. It's a horrible thing to have to consider, but I think it's the only way that a society can respond to this kind of darkness in it.
Less "banned" and more "stopped production." There's more than one bookstore in my city where I've seen The Bachman Books available for purchase. He is right about them finding other "inspirations." The same thing happens every time there's a mass shooting: the immediate search for a media scapegoat. It doesn't matter if it's Catcher in the Rye, Rage, or heavy metal music. Everyone wants to believe that either the kid(s) were inspired by "dark" media or because they had access to guns. No one ever thinks that the kids were messed up. Mental health, especially in youth, is a massive modern blindspot. But then, it always has been, hasn't it? Oh, let's not forget my favorite; NRA advocates who blame it on "bad parenting." Ultimately, it is King's work and he can do as he pleases with it. Including discontinuing it. It hasn't made the world a better place (unless you hate the book) but it also hasn't made it worse.
One might wonder what the effects would have been had it been made required reading. Sometimes bringing issues to light is better than keeping people in the dark about it. Might have made for easier identification of troubled individuals with open discussions. I'm more to leaning towards the devil you know is better than the devil you don't ideal.
Interesting discussion of Rage and why Stephen King had it banned because of all the horrible school shootings in American. I can see why he had to do it, and I respect his discision. It must play on his conscious that these disturbed kids read his book and decide to emulate the story. But that book is available on eBay like you mention -and I had a copy once. Stephen king earlier works are more darker and violent than his recent stuff. Personally, I prefer his old books and short stories.
Has the bible ever inspired real world murders? King distanced himself from Rage because he bowed to pressure. All other interpretations are coping mechanisms. Of all incidents in King's long and storied career, this shows the most weakness. Censorship is bad.
The irony here for me is that you normally sit there doing your videos with a hand gun in a shoulder holster. I've have never understood why you want to wear that gun in your videos. It looks like some love affair with the worst of American life.
i should be asleep and need to wake up for an event in 5 hours, but you know what's better than sleep? a MDC vid
Love the Long Walk. You keep raising your editing game! This should have a lot more views.
Thanks, and I agree, some videos are just born to struggle
Great video! What happened to all the older videos of interviews w/ authors?! Kinda bummed.
Moid, you're always at your best when you tackle the deeper side of Sci-Fi. Thanks for what you do.

same situation here - couldn't find old interviews with authors. I really liked those.
I came here to say the same.
Did you ever find out ?
Cheers
When you started the list my stomach sank. I can't speak for everyone but as a 39 year old American I knew what was coming.😣

I read Rage in the four book collection. I really liked the Long Walk.
Film adaptation is incoming.. apparently. The Long Walk was the stand-out to my young mind. I preferred his version of The Running Man too.

“Nobody knows what happened after the blinds were drawn.”
That’s the thing I remember from Rage.
Came by to rewatch great interviews. They're purged? Moved or hidden?
I guess I will buy a copy if I come across it.

heartbreaking about your older videos. I was working my way through them. Is there any possible way they can be restored?
A video made on the right side of taste snd sensibility. Well done.
I hope so, thank you

Woohoo!!!! Stephen King!!!

In Stephen King's defense: cocaine is a helluva drug
...and by his own admission he REALLY loved the nose candy
