I heard this song throughout my childhood, my parents would always turn the radio up in the car when it came on. Much, much later I found out that it was number one in my country (Switzerland) the week I was born. Since my parents were always happy when the song came on (I'm pretty sure they never actually listened to the lyrics, not sure whether THEY were aware it was number one during my birth...), it's a song that puts me in a nostalgic happy place despite of the lyrics. I love that I can hold both thoughts in my head at the same time.

One of my favorites at the time. I was just a kid. Now, after going through so much and losing so many loved ones, this reminds me to enjoy the simple things, like the beauty of a spring day. No one gets to have them forever, so enjoy them as much as possible and don't take them for granted.
Thank you for this one! :)

I wasn't born when this song was released (nowhere near, 1984, eleven years after the fact), however fast forward to the winter of 1987, me and my sister (who was 7 or 8 months old) stay the night at my grandparents because the heating was out of order.
I distinctly remember my nannan (grandmother)getting this record out and dancing with me to it. It's the only memory I have of her personally as she died soon after. So yeah, this song means a lot to me.

It's ironic that this song would come up recommended in my queue now. I first heard this song on the radio in 1974 and it really touched me but I remember thinking that I was young and healthy, my family was dong fine, and I would file this song away in my memory for another time. Now, my time is getting very close and I am sitting here looking out the window at such a beautiful day; but there is no one left to say goodbye to as I outlived everyone who was in my life. FYI
In a Songfacts interview with Terry Jacks, he said that after his version was released, he had dinner in Brussels with Jacques Brel, who told him about writing the song. "It was about an old man who was dying of a broken heart because his best friend was screwing his wife," Jacks said. "He wrote this in a whorehouse in Tangiers, and the words were quite different. The song originally he used to do on stage and it was in a march form, like, 'Bom ba DUM, bom ba DUM.' Quite a different thing. This old man was dying of a broken heart and he was saying goodbye to his priest and his best friend and his wife, who cheated on him. Her name was Francoise, and it went, 'Adieu, Francoise, my trusted wife, without you I'd have had a lonely life. You cheated lots of times but then I forgave you in the end, though your lover was my friend.'" Thanks to Songfacts.

While most people consider Terry a one hit wonder, he's far from it. At the age of 18, Terry formed his band The Chessmen with guitarist Guy Sobell. The Chessmen had 4 top ten hits in Canada between 1964 and 1966. He later formed The Poppy Family with his wife Susan Pesklevits (later Jacks). The Poppy Family had several hits in Canada. Plus an international hit called "Which Way You Goin' Billy", The song reached #1 in Canada and #2 in the U.S. The song "Seasons In The Sun" was originally going to be recorded by the Beach Boys with Terry as producer. The Beach Boys later decided not to and Terry decided to record it himself. He won 2 Juno Awards and it became one of the best selling recordings in Canada of all time.

I'm not recommending that you react to the song I'm about tell you about because it's too obscure, but if you want to hear his gem, listen to "Concrete Sea" by the same Terry Jack's. This song is melancholy too, but it hits you in that part of your soul that recognizes greatness.

My favorite since I was a little girl.... Plus my name is Michelle 🤗 Everytime I hear it, it reminds of my father but, he didn't die back then in the physical form, he did in my heart.... He wasn't a nice man and I was the black sheep to him. I was only 4 at the time and felt his hatred but I always wanted him to say he loved me but never really did. So when I hear this song I imagine him telling me I brought him happiness. Wow I just poured my guts out didn't I? 😏

This song actually came out when I was 9, so I took the lyrics HELLA seriously, lol!

I had this record! (Yes, record, I'm that old.) Biggest fight I remember ever having with my little brother was when he accidentally broke it. 😂

Funny story: we went down to the record store and were allowed to pick out one 45 each. I picked Billy Don't Be a Hero and my brother chose this one (in spite of the fact I told him he didn't like this song!). He bought it anyway and sure enough, he hated it and wound up giving it to me! I would up with two of my favorite songs from that time :)

@@laurakennedy9250 -- So? Much of the music in the Top 40 was sappy back then. Including this one. It was the best music. I was 11. I had a friend named Billy that was moving to another state and the song reminded me of him.

@@laurakennedy9250 yeah it was the best. Seriously? You wake up on the wrong side of the bed again? I never asked you to critique my taste in music, which happens to include all of those bands you listed too.

I lost my mom just over 5 years ago. It's not a day I don't think of her. Took me a little over 3 weeks not to go in her room and asking what she wants for breakfast. I just wish there was a way to know how much your family means to you before it's too late. I made sure my mom knew I loved her. Famous quote of a young gentleman on America's got talent. The death of a loved one is like a brick in your pocket it never really goes away. I lost my passion for baking the day my mom passed away. If you like songs like this listen to Cherokee people. A man was caught on their land and they were going to kill him. He promised if they let him go he'd write a song honoring their race of people. I'm glad he kept his promise. I'm parked Choctaw.
