  • The first argument for biological filtration is that it helps to maintain healthy water quality. Fish and other organisms produce waste products such as ammonia and nitrite. These compounds can be harmful to fish and can cause stress, illness, and even death. Biological filtration helps to break down these compounds, reducing their concentration in the water and maintaining a healthy environment for the fish.
The second argumentr for biological filtration is that it helps to establish a stable environment in the aquarium. Without biological filtration, waste products can build up quickly in the aquarium, leading to spikes in ammonia and nitrite levels. These spikes can cause stress to the fish and can lead to fluctuations in pH and other water parameters. By using biological filtration, the aquarium can maintain a more stable environment, which is beneficial for the overall health of the aquarium inhabitants.
The third argument for biological filtration is that it is cost-effective and easy to maintain. Biological filtration does not require expensive equipment or chemicals. It simply requires a source of beneficial bacteria, which can be established through the use of filter media, live rock, or other substrates. Once established, the bacteria will continue to break down waste products, requiring only occasional maintenance such as cleaning the filter media.
An example of the importance of biological filtration can be seen in marine aquariums. Marine fish and invertebrates are often more sensitive to changes in water quality than freshwater fish. Without proper biological filtration, waste products can quickly build up in a marine aquarium, leading to health problems for the fish and other organisms. In addition, marine aquariums often have delicate and complex ecosystems that require stable water parameters to thrive. Biological filtration can help to maintain these parameters, promoting the health of the entire ecosystem.
Another example of the importance of biological filtration can be seen in planted aquariums. In planted aquariums, plants use nitrate as a source of nutrients. Without biological filtration, nitrate levels can become too low for the plants to thrive. By using biological filtration, the aquarium can maintain a healthy balance of nitrate, promoting the growth of the plants and creating a more natural and aesthetically pleasing environment.
In conclusion, biological filtration is a critical component of maintaining a healthy and stable aquarium environment. It helps to break down waste products, maintain water quality, and establish a stable ecosystem. By using biological filtration, aquarium hobbyists can create a more natural and sustainable environment for their fish and other organisms.

Another question please .do you strive for a certain ph/gh/kh for the rainbows?

I aim for a pH of around 6.5-7. Luckily thats the range that comes from my tap. Now, kH and gH are a contentious issue. Some regulate it, some dont. Now, i do add a small amout of buffer to my tank, but only because my tap water reads as 0. I wish i could give a clearer answer, but its hard finding out if its a myth or not. They do say between 5-15dkH though. Id ask at your lfs though. I recently ran a poll on YT about it. Majority leave it alone

@BGN_Aquariums definitely easier to leave it alone. The ph in my currently stocked 70gal is 7.0 so I am probably good at leaving it alone. Need kh/gh test kit so I don't know on that one yet... thanks again for the advice.🙂

Hi Russ. (did i get your name right?) Do you have any issues with that red tail shark? I really like them but have heard they might be mean to cories or other fish? Thanks!

Yes mate. Im Russ. He is peaceful 99% of the time. When feeding he does get a little aggressive, thinks all the food is for him😂 he chases the Rainbowfish and minnow, but ive never seen him ho fo the corys. They do get more territorial after reaching 1 yr old

@toddbigeasy if you’re going for heavy planting, id definitely get on. Everything soon looses him in the plants
