I always imagined the carving on the root of Links treehouse was something he made himself. He was the one Kokiri who was always a little different from the rest, and while his neighbors were content to live out their serene life in the forest, he dreamed of adventure and making a name for himself.

I love this series a lot. The thing that sets it apart from simply picking apart how well a game world emulates reality through its mechanics, is the emphasis on player immersion and the emotions the developers can potentially evoke from them. Being able to articulate this so well demonstrates very impressive emotional intelligence.

I love the vibe the Kokkiri Forest has. I loved just hanging out here and there and exploring all the corners to see what else of interest I could find.
I also love just staring at the canyons in Metroid Prime 2 Echoes. I love the art direction of that game.
Also just watching the vistas in Xenoblade. Playing it on an emulator and setting the resolution to 1080p makes the art style really sell its beauty.

@@PretzelYT Xenoblade gives you the ability to manipulate the time of day, so you can take several shots of the same location during various weather effects and different hours.
In case you do, have in mind that the weather can't be directly controlled by the player, but every 12 in-hours game has a chance of the weather changing. You can set the clock to 12am, then keep shifting between am and pm until you get the desired effect, save the game, then shift the time to get the time of day you want without losing the weather effect.

I know this is an old video, but I'm just gonna chime in a bit about Kokiri Forest - it's extremely unlikely they have contact with other settlements, for two reasons. For one, they're not really supposed to leave the forest - the other Kokiri make a big deal of Link leaving the forest at the start of the game. Going the other direction, people who enter the Lost Woods turn in to either Stalfos if they're adults, or Skull Kids if they're children. It's a little unclear if this only applies to the area that's literally called "Lost Woods" in game, or the whole forest. Presumably, the reason Link is fine despite living there is due to having the spirit of the hero and/or the Triforce of Courage. It should also be said that the Kokiri are forest spirits. By the time of Wind Waker, they've changed into Koroks, but unlike the Zora, it is never explicitly stated that they "evolved." So, while this *would* be a retcon, there is a distinct possibiliy that the Koroks already existed before the time of Ocarina of Time, but when Link's mother arrived in the Lost Woods while fleeing conflict with her baby, the Deku Tree decided that it would be best for the Koroks to take on a form that more closely resembles that of Link himself, so that he wouldn't grow up feeling alone, and dubbed them "Kokiri." So while they certainly still have to eat and stuff, them being magical beings of the forest (whether they're Koroks that transformed, or whether Kokiri are a separate thing), I think it stands to reason that the forest holds all that they need in order to survive. Of course, that may not have proven true for long if Link didn't stop Ganondorf, since he seemingly used some sort of dark magic to poison the Deku Tree. That sort of tracks, since in A Link to the Past or any of the following games, there's no real evidence of living Kokiri. But in the intermittent state that Kokiri Forest is in during the events of Ocarina of time, I don't see it being a huge issue for them that they're sort of cut off from the rest of the world.
(I really hope none of this came across as "ummm, actually here's why you're wrong," that was very much not my intention, the Zelda series is just one of my many hyperfixations, this comment is all meant in good fun!)

  • @oldmetalhippyoldmetalhippy1971

Cool Videos! I've been watching your Zelda themed vids. I remember the first time I saw the very first 1986 Zelda it blew my mind. It was miles above anything else available at the time. It was in a class of it's own. 37 years later BotW and the upcoming TotK have both given me that same feeling. Wow what am I looking at?!?! Big nod to Ocarina of Time. Epona! You really got my nostalgia flowing even more!
After thought, I suppose the thing that really hooks me with Zelda games is that they have heart. Real heart with a pervasive spirituality toward all things good.

First time through a game I always take my time dicking around. Notice things like this. But then you replay a game and you're in gamer mode and roll/sprint past shit and skip cutscenes. It's like a metaphor for growing up. As a child you don't prioritize the way you do as an adult so you spend/waste time on things that don't "need" the time. But as an adult you waste your time on things you hate out of obligation or "need" like the need to pay rent or eat...

I believe the tools in the kokiri houses were meant to hint at how their houses are literal carved out trees. The shop is a very obvious stump shape.
I think those trees were seeded by the great deku tree himself, though that is more my headcanon than anything official I know of.
They're a very secluded bunch like the Gerudo, so it makes sense for them to also have some sustainable food source.

Link's house is odd. If you look at the view through link's window, it does not seem to match what you see outside... The view most closely resembles the tall tree trunks around the bridge that connects kokiri forest to hyrule field, suggesting that link's house was placed away from the main village. The agricultural tools retroactively make more sense when/if you obtain the "easter egg" reward (a cow) from lon lon ranch horse race time trial in the future that malon delivers to your house (not sure how malon knew where your house is), but it does not explain why the tools were already there long before that.

The windmill is titled "?" because it's the same area as Dampe's grave. Each area can only have one title - I'm not sure if they went with the question mark because Dampe's grave was supposed to be a mysterious, unknown location and the windmill was just collateral damage, or if it was just because they didn't want to give either room an inaccurate title.

Could also be that, due to Link being formerly from the literal backwoods that is Kokiri Village, he's got absolutely zero context on what this huge place with the spinny stuff(a Windmill) is, so he just throws up his hands in confusion and just goes '?'.
At least, that's how I see it. Now, why does he know about the other places then? Well, I reckon the Deku Tree told him stories.

How do you freely move the camera around, is there some kind of mod/AR code? I want to get some footage for a video but not sure how.
Also, do you get any ad revenue from this video? I'm worried about making anything with Nintendo content and it getting copyright claimed immediately. (Not a UA-camr yet, I'm still learning how)

I used the Ocarina of Time practice rom for the freecam.
      github.com/glankk/gz
There's an installation guide and user manual on the github. Check out the manual for details on the free camera.
Also, my video is monetized. It SEEMS like Nintendo really only goes after videos that heavily feature modding of recent games? Like I think some big creator had a video taken down recently that showed off multiplayer in Breath of the Wild. For something like what I do, where I just show off stuff in the vanilla game, I'm not too worried about them coming after me. But you'll have to make that judgement on your own based on what you wanna make.

I just stumbled upon this series and I’m hooked. The fact that you can detail these nooks and crannies in my favorite games is just so appealing. I’m grateful for fate for showing me this nice de-stressing series

Of course not, they know their actions are controlled by Control Stick movements and button presses. Remember the girl on the shop overhang who teaches you how to use a fairy? And that's a thing that only continues with later entries: Sue-Belle from Wind Waker tells you what button to press to pick up and set down pots so you can tell your sister, while Jaggle from Twilight Princess wants you to tell his kids to hold L and press A to talk to people from a distance, because they don't get it. (But they do know the controls for using the Slingshot and sword moves.)

I HAVE to cover an Elder Scrolls game one day. I wouldn't be doing this video series justice if I didn't take a stroll through Tamriel at least once.
