Eric is a great product developper. He is both technical in the world of amateur astronomy and good at listening to customers and the market in general.
I cannot speak for Celestron, but total price needs to be considered as some of the cameras people are using are already many thousand dollars. The images I am getting with it are awesome anyway, and this is just the beginning of this design. The good news, is that Celestron has purposefully made the camera upgradable without buying a new scope, so keep your eyes open for more to come.
As they said in the interview, the price of chips has dropped drastically… and for $4,000 + tax, seems like they could have picked a newer chip (like the Starvis 671). I do think it will be a great scope when its released.
Have you ever used a RASA? It’s crazy how fast it is. I guess my point is I never buy camera sensors, I buy into good optics and ride the upgrade sensor phase. No matter what they put in there, even top of the line today, won’t be anything compared to what we will have in 5 years. Things are moving too quickly to chase camera technology. The experience is what matters, and I think bang for the buck from a user experience you get is worth the premium considering you are getting a whole integrated system that simply works. My Losmandy system with Stellarvue scope cannot keep up when it comes to productivity. I have a mount top computer with touch screen and can remote in through TeamViewer and mess around with all of the Frankenstein imaging rig, or I can sit on my couch and teach my kids about space and science, technology, engineering, and math. I think it’s a preference. To each their own.
Agreed. I think the RASA scope will perform well. Just didn’t understand Celestron using a 6 year old Sony chip. I enjoy Visual, EAA, and now imaging - to each their own. 👍

Watching interview-interesting. Question on Origin. Why was an older Sony chip used? Thanks

Is there a barlow / powermate option so we can do high res Lunar, Solar, and Planetary EAA with it?
I don’t believe that’s currently a feature.

Exciting to have new products that break old paradigms.
It would be nice to bring the Origins android app and rasberi pi controller to be used to other celestron or not scopes.
It is pretty slick. I just placed a new video up for the podcast Telescopes 101” and did an “In-Focus Product Spotlight” on Origin. Check it out.
