This segment of The Last Waltz was not from the live concert on Thanksgiving day at Winter Land in San Francisco, in 1976. Martin Scorsese and The Band felt there should be a coda to the concert, so they got together again in a studio with The Staple Singers and recorded this version of The Weight. As you can see and hear, the result was one of the most iconic performances in history. For me, The Last Waltz was the best Rock Documentary of all time and this song was its' centerpiece. The death of Robbie Robertson has hit me very hard. I miss him and Rick, Levon and Richard, as well. RIP.

You're young so I'll tell you, this was common in the 60s and 70s. People and groups from different genres would sometimes by accident stumble onto some common ground and make music together!!! They found some common threads together and as you see and hear now it worked very well together!!!... music has no color,race,religion or anything!!!! Leon Helm wrote in his memoir that the production was "Too lilly white" as all the bands at the WInterland Ballroom that day in 1976 were all white, so a decision was made to bring in good friends of Levon and Danko, The Staples, to sing with The Band in the performance of this classic song. What a BRILLIANT move that was, like icing on the cake with the sultry voice of Mavis and a different element from Pops Staples.........SIMPLY BRILLIANT! When the video pans to Mavis for her lead singing part I am pretty sure ALL OF TIME STOOD STILL. MAVIS IS ABSOLUTELY MESMERIZING IN THIS VIDEO! One of my favorite videos of all time in the anals of music video.

In the end it was ego's that split them up. The drummer is levon Helms check out some of his midnight rambles. Sadly they are all gone except the piano player and the guy playing the18 string guitar.

Thank you, as a drummer we never really do get our dues. Without a good drummer the band is no good. You have to have a great drummer to have a great band. If a drummer can sing and do background vocals as I do it's even a plus. Again thank you for the shine!!!
