I made this video before programming the Asteroid Field mock-up to help try and decide which mic positions to use for CSS & CSW, so just thought I might as well share it here now in case it's useful to anyone else. This is for the most recent versions of CSS & CSW at the time of posting this.
This is: all possible mic position combinations on their default volumes - there are virtually infinite possibilities as the volumes can be adjusted on each mic, but this is a good starting point anyway to get an idea of how they sound in particular combinations together. The sound is completely dry - no reverb at all, just to give a clearer picture of each combo.
It's a pretty tedious process to make this stuff, so I imagine it's even more boring to watch, especially if you don't actually own the libraries - so I've tried to add every possible transition on the free version of Davinci Resolve to keep it mildly entertaining. Apologies for the tacky film-making.

Thanks for doing this! With CSW, my favorite mic is overhead, and my favorite combo is OH and Main. Main and Room seem like a good combo if I want a very distant, in-the-background sound. OH and Close seems best for when I want a closer sound.
Yeah that’s the way isn’t it - great to have the options to choose between!
Great video. I'd love to see more people do videos just like this one on more libraries. (I'm amazed at how infrequently other UA-camrs demo close mics on some libraries - especially Orchestral Tools.) With CSW it's interesting that the role of the overheads seems to differ so much between woodwinds and strings. It's as if all woodwind mixes without the overheads seem narrower than similar mixes with strings. So I think with the woodwinds I'd plan to include at least a little of the overheads all the time, even for up-close sounds.
Yeah, totally agree - in fact the OH mics are my “close” mics for woodwinds!
This video took absolutely *ages* to make so I can definitely understand why there aren’t more of them around haha
I can't decide. They all sound good after about 3 seconds.
Do you encounter any phasing issues when combining mic positions, or is that already handled by the sample library?
None that I‘ve noticed, but I know combining mics can cause this. I think the main issue for phasing is copied & pasted parts, with all the same cc data, which is why I’m always a big fan of trying to play every line if you have the time. Some instruments are definitely made to deal with copying & pasting (I know if you paste Horn 1 part from Infinite Brass onto the other 5 Horns, it still sounds great - I even try it in another video on here) but some libraries aren’t built for it
Which is your go-to for woodwinds and strings?
Depends on the project, but I think I used O/M/R and S/S/M for Asteroid Field (for a slightly closer/older sound), and I also reduced the Overhead mic slightly.
I use the default strings mic much more than the woodwinds one
@@simonpassmore Thank you :)
@@simonpassmore Do you EQ CSS?
@@sivaramakrishnanmeenakshis167 I do, I can't remember what my go-to is but I think I copied it from a Joel Dollie video haha. I'll open up a project later & let you know!
@@simonpassmore Sure thank you
