Make sure to watch the director's cut. Added loads more stuff explaining things and had more money so the soundtrack is another level.
He's in an alternate/tangent universe and has to sacrifice himself for it to close. If he doesn't then it could destroy the "real" universe where everyone he loves exist. He's a hero.
It's my favourite film because there are things that line up with my life. I saw the director's cut first so I've never been able to enjoy the theatrical cut.

so its not a metaphor or anything from what i can tell everything youre seeing is lieral, his being alive shouldnt have happened because it wasnt his fate so he realises that everything that happened on Halloween is his fault, he uses the storm to go back in time which also takes the jet engine that kills him back, and then gretchen waving at his mother is to do with all of the book stuff
