    I just became a rookie lifeguard n NYC at age 69 after a rigorous 16 weekly training followed by the dreaded speed test. I am now employed by the City of New York!

    This is for anyone who likes to help communities; who like to do something they love to be doing; and never had the time to do it in the past. At any age if you have the energy and the willing to be a professional as a life guard; like I'm 54 and proud.

    Haha in my training we had to do the rescues without a tube. Makes you appreciate your tube a lot more.

    Thought it was an excellent video to life guarding. i know the first person i saved was the greatest feeling in the world. she had to be transferred by ambulance to hospital. we had started CPR on her. its a ton of responsibility for s 15 year old.

    I'm currently doing a lifeguard course in Ireland and we only use the rescue tube for tows, we never use the backboard (it takes far to long and when they were turning him his head was not supported so if he was in paralysed or unconscious his head would have been bobbing about not to mention he was sliding about in the water!) we do everything by hand and as a team be it only one lifeguard or 5 to 6 we are taught how to teacher the members of the public to aid in getting the casualty out of the water..
    We're just going onto deepwater spinal injury recovery ie vice grip... we have to keep their head steady with out arms and swim with our legs only..
    In the test itself there are 3 timed swims all of which we carry a casualty..

    Can you wear glasses during lifeguard training if you have an athletic strap?

  • @wcresponder
    @wcresponder 10 років тому +1

    The back board is complicating the procedure. One guard in water with their shoulder under the victims hips the other hand on the edge of the pool and the second guard on deck with their arms under the patients arms holding the patients wrists. First guard starts the lift and the second lifts straight up and takes a step back and places patient on deck. Easy peasy.

    Not sure if I’ll get a response but why not: I’m going into lifeguard training, and while I don’t look it, I’m about twice the age of most people going in (30). Will that be an advantage or disadvantage?

    There are sometimes signs of telling whether a person has a spinal injury such as a protrusion around the neck area. Another one is if the victim has blood or a milky substance coming from there nose or ears.

  • @amberview30
    @amberview30 11 років тому +1

    How would you know whether a person has a spinal injury or not? A doctor has to do an xray to figure that out usually or by asking questions. It's kind of hard to ask an unconscious person if they have issues. It might be easier to get a big person out with the board I would think...leverage?

    • @ryandolan8522

      I know this is old, but I feel like it is an important topic. At our pools, its dependant on if we suspect a spinal injury from their mechanism of injury. For example, if someone dived in the no diving zone and hit their head on the bottom. We might suspect a spinal injury, and backboard them. Of course we cant know for sure if there is a spinal injury like a doctor can, but we do our best to help prevent further injury if we think an incident could have caused a spinal injury. Hope this helps.

    Guys, come on.....They are practising for the particular object, which is water.
    They can't do other excersises(except if they want by their own).This is that they have to do .To give their best part of theirselves everytime is thah needed.TO SAVE OTHERS WHEN THAT NEEDS. So they can't do squat or bodybuilding or anything else.BECAUSE IT DOESN'T NEED TO DO. :)

    Unless you like to sit around and stare at water for 8-12hrs for less pay, I don't recommend this job. I use to be a lifeguard and any type of rescue is rare

      That’s what they were practicing when they said passive victim. If it’s passive submerged you would need a backboard. Watch at 4:45

    I almost drowned my first time trying a deep water spinal rescue

  • @obi-wankenobi9201
    @obi-wankenobi9201 5 років тому

    Not trying to diss their trainings or anything, but I feel like they’re relying too much on equipment. Having to use the tube for anything but an active victim is not a good use of time. How would you carry a victim to the deck if you didn’t have an aid. Also, would not use the backboard for anything but a spinal. They are heavy as hell and what would you do if your facility only had one in the other side of the deck? Even if it’s right next to you, it is still faster to just pull them out without it.
    Other than that, they are learning important lifesaving skills, and may one day save lives.

    • @jodylong5208

      Obi-Wan U use the backboard to prevent any further injuries to the victim! and yes the backboard is used only for spinal injuries. Raechel L. (using moms account)

    passive submerged skill...contact then start pulling the line and climbing up. HAHAHAHA what a bloody waste of time. Grab victim and start kicking to the surface then roll them and then hit the throttle and get them out of there no muss no fuss no entanglement factor not putzing around with a rescue tube in a pool.
    Man lifeguarding is going backwards.
