- I recently bought this Studer B67 mk1 from a friend of mine. It has been recapped and fully aligned about two years ago and it still holds up :) I decided to play an excerpt from a copy (of a copy of a copy...) of the production master of Pink Floyd's The Wall. This is still one of my best sounding tapes.

This is by far the best quality of the album I've ever heard. It's so high quality, you can hear Roger's vocal effects behind the band. You can HEAR THE ECHO.
"You can HEAR THE ECHO." - Yeah, this was the most baffling part for me as well! Like in the "silent" parts I heard echo instead of hiss!

This is the best sounding media in the world...nothing comes close..even not Vinyl..
What memories! This Studer reel-to-reel was just over $5,000.00 back in 1978, when it was first released. I think to myself, "My, what a treasure of quality audio!" And, I'm also reminded of how the Sony Betamax was about $1,500.00, around that time, and now, you can find some of those same Betamax units for under $50! This is keeping in mind that $50 today is $50, but $5,000 or $1,500 back then is now x3 or x4 those amounts!
Fortunately, the price of these decks is holding up quite well, at least here in Europe. Similar, non-VU versions of the B67 go for 1000€ on eBay in an as-is condition. Serviced units with warranty, equipped with VU meters can go for as much as 5000€! Insane.
Also, high-end VCRs still cost quite a bit. I feel lucky that I found my Panasonic NV-FS200 (known as the AG-1980 in the States) for 130€ shipped. They go mostly for more than 250€.

WOW soo clear high frequencies and transients. This sounds better than every other format you can find anywhere (except the master copy of the album of course)

I wish they would go back to these tapes and release CDs from them because this sounds better than any of the "remasters" I've ever owned, and I had quite a few over the years.
Check out the mofi edition. From what I heard they directly ripped it from the master tape. My copy sounds pretty good(in my opinion)
Not sure about The Wall, but the best Dark Side of the Moon I ever heard was on a MoFi CD. The one with golden surface, released in the late 80s or early 90s. That thing was damn close to my tape copy.
Sounds so crisp, great stuff.
That is the thing about some analog recordings on youtube. Sweet even after 2 compressions/decompressions. I' d like to have the first digital recording! Attilas's setup always sound awesome! Thank you
Be aware that the digitalization process is lossless, so the only true compression is the UA-cam compression which is a very good quality compression (to my ears).
@@william_mazza UA-cam compression of audio is the worst ! You can do a quick search on UA-cam itself and you will find comparison between it and Spotify , Apple music , tidal etc UA-cam looses slot of mid and highs

I doubt I'd get these in India.

According to youtube stats there is atleast 4 dB of headroom.
But sounds as loud as other typical songs on YT.
Testament to the recording/mastering skills of the era.
What an amazing sound!!! If it sounds like this converted to digital on your computer and then converted again on youtube, I wonder live from your equipment.
My thoughts exactly when a good tape/vinyl gets the correct recording attention...

You can imagine the sound if you connect a good valve amplifier and a good speakers like Proac, Harbeth, Spendor, Epos, Monitor Audio...Really wonderful!!!

I've done the comparison to my The Wall '79 and 2016 remastered vinyls, and I like more the clarity of what I can hear from your YT'ed version. I can't imagine how beautiful it must sound in real life. Congrats, my friend! Yoh have a real treasure!!

It’s better than my CD copy, it was my dads copy and the condition isn’t great but it sounded amazing but it was quiet. This has amazing bass without overwhelming the rest of the music.

I recently acquired this same model Studer (B67 MkI). I need to move a bunch of stuff around before I can actually use it. Can't wait! I started using open reel tape in 1980 when I was 13 years old. I've loved it ever since!

I' m not surprised, I also own a B67 MK I from 1978, the last year they where produced, in 1979 came the MK II.
Before that I owned several recorders like Akai Philips and Teac, now it's only Revox and Studer, what else !!
You can actually hear David Gilmour's strings make contact with the frets on the Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2 solo. Absolutely mind blowing sound quality

I believe his uncle/relative worked in audio in Central Europe in the 70s.
To press lps for then Czechoslovakia? you need a copy of the tape.
EMI would take the real master, safety copy that for production.
0 gen is then stored and those 1st gen copies used to make lps.
Take one of those and copy it, send the 2nd gen to Prague to make CZ lp pressings.
This would be 2 or even 3 steps from original.
0) Original tape in vault
1) UK production masters (many) copies of 0
2) Regional production masters (many) made as copy if 1
3) Maybe one more step copy of 2
This could be 3 steps removed from the master tape.
@@sammencia7945 love these myths about the origin of my tapes :) All I can tell is that this is at least the 5th generation copy, if not more down the line, however I can't disclose the source.

Wow. How did they mess up the "Remasters" so much? That is why I prefer listening to my dads original vinyl from the 70s. Sounds 10x better than the digital remasters.
The remasters are all shit because they were created to conform to the idiotic loudness wars.

Pink Floyd The Wall; an absolute masterpiece. I have the gold MFSL. I own a very good music system.sonically, the two CDs are pretty much the best you can find on CD. and in my opinion equal to this band recording here. Who can should get these CDs absolutely!
To my ears the MFSL gold CDs have much to much bass. Although it seems to be good at the first listening, it's annoying in the further sessions. The clarity is superior to many other editions. The latest remaster has no good tonal balance either. On the bottom line i like the first CD edition mastering most. And it's very close to the master here.

Wow, It still sounds amazing despite youtube compression, but pay attention to the pre emphasis of some early digital recording, some editions of the wall has it, sounds like it has the top end a little too emphasized.
Sounds just like when I played it back in 1979, on a JVC QL-A2 Quart Locked Direct Drive Turntable, a JVC JA-S22 Integrated Amplifier, and Mordaunt Short Pageant Speakers!
Sounds just like when I played it last week, on a PHILIPS CD104 CD Player with Dual Mono 14 Bit Dacs (1984), a Musical Fidelity B200 Integrated Amplifier (1990), and Mordaunt Short Pageant Speakers! (1979)

I have an original 1st US pressing of this album and it sounds very good along with a 1990 Mobile Fidelity Ultra CD of The Wall album. This totally blows those away the Mofi gold CD comes a little close to this. Thank you very much for sharing these production masters with us. If you don't mind me asking how did you come in possession of them?

How in the hell did you manage to get this!?
For anyone who wants a good CD copy of the wall, the first US Columbia CD (C2K 36183) from 1985 should sound just as good as this. It's the same digital mastering as the first Japanese 50DP Sony CD, which should be a flat transfer or really close to it.
@Mike P Yeah it is a production copy, forget to mention that, but I doubt they did any EQ on it. Also de-emphasis is very easily to do in software, I use SoX.
@Mike P I actually do, are you actually sure you have the first issue from 1985. Check peak levels in EAC and compare them to the 50DP Sony disc. If not, shut up and don't act like a prick.

Could someone correct me, please - I intentionally did not listen simultanesously to "retail" version of the album, but I believe, some audio effects are missing in Pt.1 (children screaming at playground) - that's why it sounds more "dynamically expanded"? The rest two songs sound pretty similar to "release" versions.

Even with lossy YT compression and 8 DDD steps it is obvious this sounds incredible.
I have a copy of the best sounding lp of The Wall - a USA promo pressing.
This sounds much better.
Why 8 DAD steps? While this tape is a copy (of a copy of a copy) of the production master, it was always kept in the analog domain. There was only one AD conversion on my side, and one DA conversion during playback on your end.

This goes through so many digital compression steps. Your app, YT, your ISP crunches it, it gets unpacked when it arrives at the viewer.
It's compressed by YT when you uploaded it.
It is uncompressed when they play it, when my phone decodes it, when my yt app plays it.
You certainly must know - take your phone , connect it to your stereo and play your own upload off youtube at home through your amp.
Then play the tape you have.
That's the huge difference.

@@sammencia7945 yeah, UA-cam does reencode the audio, where quite a bit of quality is lost. Then the only factory which plays a major role in the resulting sound quality during playback is the DAC of the device and the analog circuitry driving the line/headphone output. Decoding the compressed audio results in the same PCM bitstream on any platform, if the decoding is done properly. Of course, the OS could have a very minor impact with the timing of the audio subsystem, but we are splitting hairs here.
The first major quality hit taken is the AD conversion and the other one is UA-cam's audio compression. Anything else is the playback chain is nothing in comparison.

This is a Studer B67 mk1, a fully analog tape machine made between 1973 and 1982.
