This was interesting, never really thought about it in terms of explicit “orthodoxy”. I had honestly not heard about the Ryogemon before. Would you say there is such a thing as Jōdo Shinshū “heresies”?
Good to hear from you Noah. If by heresy you mean deviation from accepted doctrine, the answer is "yes". And historically, the Tannisho would be an example of an effort to clarify such. That said, there is not to my knowledge a concept of punishment for heresy. Also, current definitions might be different from those in the past. John ❤I have been listening a lot to “ego podcast “ (Buddhism ) which I find to be accurate in content and context , instructional , able to explain difficult concepts ..let me know how you find it
Okay so I parsed a little 9:05 11:43 They read well together. It feels like the Monshin has more to say than just an update of language. Like maybe he wants to write a commentary? Somebody should do future Buddhists the favor of asking him write one cause I think y'all might be walking into one of those historical controversies I've read so much about. Good luck!
Thanks again for the great video. I wanted to share my opinion but I just started practicing Shin Buddhism over a year ago. So I will follow the traditional way and interpretation. What I appreciate though from the japanese teachers is that they are very careful in translation to make the teachings clear as possible. A great example I had in the past days was the phrase "to believe in" vs "To have faith" or "To remove all doubts". As english is my second language, all these phrase means the same to me but my teacher is very patient in explaning the differences to me. I realised how vulnerable I am to misbelieve and deviations.
At this point in my life I merely want to bathe my mind and spirit in the purity of Shin ran and Rennyo and Tannisho. Controversy is for the young, John. Namu Amida Butsu
Thanks for covering this, my venerable dharma brother John. I've personally no time for modernism in pure land discourse, other than to combat it. The state of BCA is quite regrettable in my opinion, although some individual churches are still very good (not overly familiar with yours), it seems to vary wildely. To me, Master Shinran's Tannisho (as put forth by Yuen Bo) tells me all I need to know about the steadfastness of our shinjin. Why the Otani-Ha ever thought it would justify their own divergence? This is still beyond me. With deep gratitude, Nik Namu Amida Butsu
Thanks, Nik. Let me make you aware that Reve. Takata of the West LA Buddhist Temple is offering a 4 session series on the Tannisho, on Saturdays. You can find detail on their website. If you decide to join, I will "see" you there. Gassho, John

The "modern" version is.beautiful, as is the original. The later seems.almost a response to the original.

Interesting observation, Ray. I get what you are saying. -John
