So they spents millions on the new 707’s just to get rid of them and use older trains? great idea south western rail, you guys are geniuses. It would have been worth it if they got back the slam doors, and the great 442’s.
It is now cheaper to order new trains than to refit older trains and South West Railways want just one or two types of train so hence that is why they have ordered new aventras.
Because the cost of borrowing money is so low. The train companies deem it more cost effective to purchase new trains of one or two types resulting in lower maintenance costs and lasting 30-35 years than having to maintain lots of older types, that may last 15 years.
It is pure economics. They will save money or they would not do it. I agree that should not happen to South West Trains stable (Class 458, 456, 707), and the recent retractioning of Class 455 to store Class 707 at Wimbledon, it is a waste.
Diversion or they can be going to a depot like for instance some of the Swr go to a depot which uses a bit of the District line between Wimbledon park & Putney.
Every 7 years there is a new franchise owner, After SWR is Probably Crossrail 2 Which will run through the network. The class 701 Aventras will replace the 707 which will run on the suburban Lines, possibly the 707 Will be scrapped or given but the 458/5 Will maybe be given to Southeastern. Farewell Swt Farewell...
They aren’t being scrapped - they are owned by angel trains who will lease then elsewhere. They will be replaced by Aventras which will also be leased to SWR. The lease on the Aventras is cheaper for SWR than the 707’s.
The 458s are staying they are replacing the unwanted 422s which are going to scrap they are going to be 4 cars and 100mph to be used on the Portsmouth direct line.

Nope. The operator now is South Western railway who is part of the first group. South West trains was part of stagecoach group.

How comes I saw the same company operating around the gatwick, croydon and victoria area?
You probably mistaked it or a diversion.

Yes, the new operator wants to have them replaced along with the Classes 455 , 456 and 458/5.
That might be the dumbest decision I've heard. Money gone down the drain. Literally replacing new trains with new trains. I can't even..
