- This video gives a quick glimpse of what typically takes place at track events around the country. This are my favorite car events of the year and are the best way to improve your driving skills on a regular basis. THIS IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR READING YOUR CLUBS RULES AND TRACK REGULATIONS! This is simply a look behind the curtain in hopes that it will encourage to join us at the track. Thanks so much for watching and be safe :)

I have spent the few months literally saying to my friends "I wanna get into track days I just don't know anyone that does them regularly to explain the process." Thank you Larry for the knowledge and taking the time to make the video. This video is one of your best yet.
Something which needs to be touched on;
Stock/lightly "modified" street cars(figure the typical power/handling mods without the "proper" first mods) will generally boil brake fluid in 3-4 laps, will be overheating in 2-3 laps(and probably flashing warning lights by 5), and oil temps will be going nuts. Auto transmissions might start acting funny in 2-3 laps. This is for smaller tracks, if it has longer straights you may get away with a few more laps.
Larger radiators, oil coolers, trans coolers, later-spec brake fluid(DOT 3 boils at 205C, DOT 5 at 260C, make sure your seals/hoses can take it), brake ducts, everything you can do to keep it cool. Water/meth may be beneficial to keep charge temps down and in turn reduce load on the coolant, water spray(ie. some Evos/others run it) on your intercooler.
More "race" driven brake pads will perform better than standard street pads(ie. EBC Yellow Stuff or equivalent for your vehicle, it's what I use and can vouch for but there are plenty of other great pads)
It isn't fun running out of brakes into a sharp corner and ending up in the dirt ahah
Maybe true for American cars. Not so for the Germans and Swedes.
I bashed my stock Volvo S40 T4 for 8 hours around the Salzburgring two times last fall. I only stopped for gas.
First time it was pouring rain and I had great fun. I was basically alone on the track.
Second time was bone dry and I could practice the racing line the whole day. At the end of the day, my fresh brake pads were done and so was I.
But no overheating, no brake fade, no trouble.
And this car is 23 years old.
My friend's equally old V6 Ford Probe however... It had an aftermarket oil cooler and still managed to overheat. Slow, sluggish and bitchy. Poor dude watched me run rings around him.
All cars on track require at least pads, brake fluid and cooling system upgrades.
Sowy but upgrade brakes and cooling and suspension before even thinking of boosting the pony power. And tires. Lol
@@Thunder_Yoda call bullshit on 8hrs unless you were crusing at 100kph.
Instructors don’t let newbies drive so fast they will melt brakes and tires the first weekend out. It’s about learning how to drive at a track and by day 2 getting a little speed on. I’d say by second or third outing and the hook has caught time to get tires and better brake pads and go from there.
There's really no solid track "how to" videos. These are great for people wanting to get into it
Those wheels are perfect for the car.
Where I live we don't have tracks, we only have a quarter mile but it's only open for about 3 hours and it's all old. We usually street race in a straight street that is about 1/2 mile next to a football stadium. The police come sometimes to "shut us down" but all they do is charge about 1$ per car and leave us be. Yet the government releases videos saying how street racing is wrong, how it's a criminal action, and that the police do the best they can to shut us down. Instead of opening a race track. This is in Mexico, btw.
Ahhhh....responsible street racing.😀
I had a lot of fun at Palmer in June. Went to an open track day, were some folks from COM Sports Car Club there. They are an excellent group to run with. Only fifteen people there for the day, two of us in my run group. We had the track to ourselves! So much fun.
Good advice here for people new to HPDE. One thing he didn't mention is fluid changes. I flush the brake fluid before every event (Motive bleeder FTW). If not flushing for every event, a bleed should definitely be done! If the car is a daily, bleed after the event too. The fresher the fluid, the higher the boiling point. You do not want to boil the brake fluid. Change the oil. Consider changing the coolant if it hasn't been done recently. Transmission and differential fluid should be changed more frequently than normal if car is being tracked. If you are having a speed shop do the tech inspection and work, they should go over this.
You should also try and get an instructor that drives the same type of car, or has in the past. Let the instructor drive the start of the first session to show you the line. Brake early, focus on keeping the car positioned where instructed. Try to memorize the track and the locations of the flag stations(corner workers). Don't go out there expecting to drift like Chris Harris.
Also, the anti-skid systems (if car has them) should be left on for the first few track days. Then think about going into the performance mode or turning the systems off. Keep in mind that they work by activating the brakes and will increase the amount of heat being put into the brake system (another reason to make sure the brake fluid is new).
If you are looking at mods for track prep: roll bar/cage or harness bar + 6 point harnesses are #1. It is a lot easier to feel what the car is doing if your body isn't flopping around. Also much safer if an accident should occur. Increase safety, increase longevity (essentially cooling for the various systems, brakes, engine, oil, trans&diff), only then increase power.
Once you get out of Novice and are doing events several times a year, you will notice that the car will eat brake pads, rotors, and tires. Keep that in mind before putting $1600 worth of Michelin tires on the car or fancy $400 a piece rotors. This hobby is expensive! I run the cheapest tires I can get with stock rotors and pads (non-ceramic). The extra 1 second a lap is not worth the extra money. HPDEs are not about time, but education and fun. I would rather go to more track days.
I'm getting into track driving. Seeing your cool 911 saddens me. My dad had a gorgeous 1980 911 that he sold. So cool seeing yours on the track. Good vid.
All I can say to all people who want to have fun on trackday event, just go ahead and do it, just be polite, respect other drivers and have fun.
Man, this is a fantastic video. I've been wanting to take my M3 to the track for the past year but am always scared I'll embarrass myself with my lack of track knowledge. I feel a lot more confident after watching this. Thanks :)
I havent watched the whole video, just for the thunbnail and your dedication im pressing like! Im used to grest quality videos from you!
This is a great video. As a novice driver who's only been to the track once, the tips on what to bring and what to do is super helpful. Thanks Larry! - Michael
Larry I will continue and continue to watch your vids I have only subscribed in last 2 months when I came along your channel but I have watched 3/4 of your vids and your true passion for detailing and your passion for these vehicles motivates me to do those extra steps on my car and what makes my car stand out from me and my friends I cannot wait to try your products your a big inspiration and if you could do a vid on how to use your carnuba paste wax please that would be helpful
Thank u!!!
Such a great video Larry, and the resources you provide are invaluable! AMMO NYC is a 'must see' for those who are passionate about car care & those who are true auto enthusiasts! Job well done, and thanks!

You're the best Larry, love everything you do!
Daaamn. I just love your channel. You are such a great person. Thaks for all your knowledge sharing!
+Andre_SS Thank u!
There are tons of "Good" people in HELL just like Larry screaming out in agony. Ask him if he knows the Lord. Ask him if i knows for sure if he'll be going to heaven. If he doesn't know for sure and why, the answer is he'll be headed to Hell, just as he should. especially since his brand logo sports a PHOENIX on it. Larry is down with Satan. don't be decieved.
+ken rosal I am seriously holding to my chair hoping you are trying to be funny, which you are not by the way, and not being serious about that crap you just wrote.
+Fofus Glad this is getting some response. Maybe some of the viewers will be curious enough to learn about the gift of God, and salvation. Why would I be kidding? Obviously because you dont understand, you haven't received the gift of eternal life. Better start searching for God before you die in your sins
+ken rosal Oh, I see... you have a detailing channel too, and you want to spoil Larry's work. Good luck my friend. And that god/satan bullshit doesnt make any sense... Please dont breed.
Your car just looks damn awesome, the wheels are completely perfect for it.
Larry, This is an awesome guide for track day newbies!!! Maybe even too much awesome info haha... I only spoke with you once in person, but I can see that you really have captured your drive and passion for automotive culture, detailing excellence, and racing enthusiasm. What I find extra special about you is that you take the time to share your enjoyment with others for the sole purpose of hoping they find the same joy you do. Cheers to you Larry.
Super video for beginners. Nice 964. One thing that really helps is checking tire temp as well as pressure to really dial that in. Moving up to the point where you add a data logger that lets you see your time vs braking vs lateral forces plotted on a detailed path around the track in sync with a video cam... yeah, now we're talkin.
Very thorough and educational video, thanks for making it. I'm currently building my RX-8 for track and daily use and haven't had any track experience yet, so videos like this definitely help build a bit more understanding and confidence for a beginner like myself. Thanks again and definitely earned a new sub
A quick thanks for a great video. I have my first HPDE day this coming Saturday over at Buttonwillow in So Cal and your video clearly outlines the steps I need to take to prep the car and myself. Granted I've done a number of Auto-X days but being on a track is a whole different beast. Well both the driver and car are ready. Many thanks and best of luck to you sir.
+clubsportZ Sweet! glad it helped.
Thanks mate. Could be your best video ever. Even though it has little to do with cleaning cars, I don't know that this had ever been covered elsewhere!
Thanks Adam!
best track day vid i have seen, thanks for all the great info
I took my 911 out last year and wished I had seen this video first. I don't know if anyone bothers with track day insurance but I tried a number of people and I found Locktons and MORIS were the most competitive. MORIS were VERY fast and helpful.
This is a great guide that's easy to follow and understand for novices. We appreciate the additional steps you've added on how to keep your car looking good on the road after a beating at the track. We utilize similar methods to keep our fleet of exotic supercars looking fresh each day our customers drive them at the track.
We'd love to have you out at an event with us to help perfect of methods and keeping them look like their rolling off the showroom floor. If so, we'd be happy to arrange for you to get out on the track with us. Interested?
+Xtreme Xperience Of course call me at the office to discuss :)
Larry I saw a beautiful white LFA at cars and coffee this last Sunday sporting a nice little ammo decal
One of your GREATEST videos ever!
I’m taking my ‘87 Alfa Spider to Thunderhill on 8/2/19 with my buddies from Reno SCCA and will post this on our website for first timers like me. Well done and excellent production value. 👍👍👍
What a great video! I wish there was something like this when I started 10 years ago--it would have saved me a lot of time and effort up front.
Fast-forward to today, I've been a chief instructor, I'm now an SCCA racer, and I still love going back to instruct new students. About the only thing I'd add: the most common thing I see people do in preparing for a track day is that they go out and put on all of the aftermarket parts they can find before they know 1.) what those parts can and cannot do, and 2.) what the baseline of their car is. Go out and get used to your car the way it was built (or the way it was when you bought it) and address handling, speed, braking issues as you learn to recognize them. (OK, flush your brake fluid with new fluid and buy street/track brake pads before your first track day.)
(By the way, was this filmed at Palmer? That looks great!)
Well done video, I did track days for a number of years and got into instructing with PCA, this brings it all back. Just got a 911 too, maybe time to get back out there!
I wish everyone was like Larry he seems like such a good and genuine dude always willing to teach!
Love your videos bro they are so informative, my car is looking on point thanks to you 🤓
this is exactly what I think most people look for when they want to find a quick and easy guide to follow for their first track day experience. excellent video like always love the channel keep up the amazing work. such an inspiration!
Great Channel!!! I've learned a lot about detailing all the different cars that i've owned and what that particular car likes. Most of all you own a black car & almost all the vehicles i've owned have either been black or some other dark color. Also, thanks for the DE into...hopefully that will help others get out on the track and learn how to drive their car so they can enjoy it that much more. Thanks for posting!!!
by far one of my favorite videos from Larry that isn't fully about detailing. although I love detailing.
Larry, thank you for this fantastic video and the pdf on your website. I'm about to do my first track event next week and i'm trying to be as prepared as can be!
+Ken Engrie My pleasure Ken. Have a blast on the track!
that Porsche is beautiful and the gold wheels are stunning.
Great job, and lots of cool info.
this has to be your best video yet! This is a video I wish I watched four years ago when I got into DE's, it would have been a lot less intimidating. Love seeing the shots of Palmer too!
This video is incredibly helpful, Thanks for making it!
Very informative videos. I use a lot of your detailing techniques on the my 2010 Ford Focus RS mk2 and spread the word between my mates. Kind Regards from Brisbane Australia.
Larry you are my hero. You remind me of my brother.
Fantastic summary! I am a track chair for a neighboring PCA region and I am going to borrow this for all our new students.
+musgt46l Thank you! (which region? Feel free to call me if you want to discuss offline. Number is on the website www.ammonyc.com)
Fantastic representation and very helpful to those who have never done a track day!
Larry I just love the way you are always so geeked out over your Porsche!!! You have motor oil instead of blood running through your veins just like me!! ENJOY!!!!
this is really comprehensive. i think many people will benefit from this.
could you include a list of must have items? you brought a lot of stuff that most people won't have. (ie. hans because most won't have 6 point harness)
Nice I just made one of these for autocross! My first track day is next month! Perfect timing for this vid!
Very informative video for someone like me hoping to one day go to a track day. Thank you for all your great information.
You should check out Calabogie Mortorsport Park in Ontario Canada! You wouldn't be disappointed Sir.
Yeah !!!!! Larry, Spencer and 964 !!!! you 3 are great !!!!!
This is an awesome video - you did a great job. I really wish that a video like this existed when I was starting out as it would have taken the mystery out of going to the track. Nice meeting you at Palmer and keep doing what you are doing!
TRAACK DAY BROOO
i've been racing for a while and I still learn for this xD
Great Vid Larry! - Lots of different angles and aspects of track day that has your style on it :) I wished I had thoroughly waxed my car before my track day - had some nice chunks of rubber flying on my car. I picked and peeled over a dozen rubber splats after a day at the track. Enjoy your next track day!
Excellent video Larry. As someone who is just getting into track days this was very informative. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the great video! Whenever someone asks me about my track stickers at PCA events and how to get involved themselves I always point them to this video.
For me, track prep starts with watching vids of the track in a similar car to mine. If I can, I play a simulator as well on that track.
I also talk to my pals who are going and see what they are taking car wise and if they are using any secondary vehicles with tools/stuff in case of issues.
I generally take basic tools with me, spare parts possibly, oil, coolant etc.
I also take a few extra bits like camber measuring tool and stuff if I decide to record the day out.
Usually, if it is a serious track day, I take a spare set of wheels with track day tyres on as I drive my car to the track. Need a pressure gauge ;)
I've often lent my low slung car jack to other track goers on the day. Although my track car is quite light at 850 kg I got a two ton one for my M5, which not only is heavier but almost as low as my track car. Normal jacks won't cut it.
Always bring cable ties :)
Jubilee clips are handy too, and I've even needed the odd spare wheel bolt.
Often, I've not needed to overload my car with stuff because if the shit hits the fan I have fellow track goers and sometimes even spectators happy to help. My first track day saw me blow up my engine on a Clio Williams. I got home eventually and the guy that helped me put my car in his own garage and helped me loads. We are best pals now :)
Thank you for the knowledge! The car detailing tips at the beginning kinda blew my mind.
Gorgeous car. Black with the gold wheels look freaking amazing.
You're the man Larry. Great job and keep it up mate.
Helpfull video! not at porsche level yet, but it's the same routine.
I carry oil, a toolbox, and a decent jack in my car, just in case.
Hey Larry - great video, very specific and a great guide for beginners. You can drive through the EZPass with the transponder not on the windshield, FYI.
Thanks for this vid, I've booked my first trackday two weeks ago so this helps a lot. Your C4 looks perfect on the track! Awesome car.
I can't wait for Palmer to be finished. I bet you loved all the rock debris on track. But what a fun track
Thanks this helps a lot. I went to my first track day two weeks ago and am planning my next one. Thanks for the tips.
Nice work Larry!
Larry your the best man! I love this channel
Fantastic video Larry! Captured perfectly. edited flawlessly - and as always hugely informative!
That blue 993. So cool.
+Jue_boy Bill Verburg's RS clone. Great car
+eeterp32 Bill's a certified badass.
eeterp32 ajvasil Neat! Just Google Image searched it.
Thanks for this. I'm just starting to get into modding my car and didn't know how to even get into a track day event.
What an awesome video, thank you for this very clear and concise introduction. I think this could serve as *the* go-to video for anyone interested in tracking a car. Great job!
never close the hood by pressing on the crest. push firmly just below it, on the hood itself. first thing to inspect on a used porsche is the hood crest. if its concave, its been abused in at least one way
Most useful youtube channel I've seen in a while. I'm glad I subscribed and keep it up!
Track day guide to the apocalypse track day. This is incredibly thorough! haha
I love the detailing videos Larry but I hope you keep posting track videos along with them!
Great video...enough said!
HPDE track days are the most fun you will ever have with your car, much more track time than at the drag strip. Added bonus is that if you ever take your car to a show you will be one of the 5% who has actually driven your "track car" on a race track. Lots of posers at car shows, no posers at the track.
Very cool video...you got a new sub. I've been wanting to track my 240sx for a while.
Amazing video! I just wish there were more tracks around me! Only tracks around here are dirt tracks and drag strips! Wheel gel? New product?! CANT WAIT!! :)
You look like a track day pro. Great vid!
Do you race? That's a whole different level and a LOT more fun!
Great video! Very informative with excellent production value. Keep up the good work!
Great video Larry, you covered just about everything. I just came back from a NASA-NE event at Palmer....great new track!
As always, a great video Larry! Really enjoyed it, and full of great advice! Especially for someone like me who has never done a track day but is looking into it in the very near future.
Thanks!
Awesome vid. Very helpful.
Fantastic video, so much information! and what a car man!
holy cow! sounds like I need a race team to get my r53 where it needs to be!
I really like these wheels you have for the track. Car looks a bit more aggressive with them. :) I really liked this vid.
This was a very helpful video when I went on my first track day now I’m hooked 🏁🏁🏁👍
Love your videos Larry! Really appreciate it! I feel like I should be paying you for your detail oriented information!
Another great video Larry! All it's missing is a "Deazle" cameo !
Palmer is such a great track, isn't it? Hope you had a great time. Thanks for the video. I'm going to use it for recruiting others to this amazing hobby/sport. Thanks!!
Very informative! Can't wait to start learning and hitting up Lime Rock soon!
Great video Larry! The 964 is looking great.
Fantastic video!
Looks like you are getting great use of your 964! Keep up the great work!
Really helpful. I wish this video was around when I first started. Thanks Ammo!
Great video. I need to get back into the track. I miss it so much...
Cool vid AMMO!
Very cool car. A classic forever
Awesome video Larry! Please keep more like this coming!!!!
LOVE YOU LARRY
+Guss_Bruss Love you 2!!!!
