I have literally no preference on neck joints really. I rarely get up high enough for the heel to be an issue and tonally, I've always been able to get where I want to be as long as I've got a decent amp behind me - or a decent OD pedal infront of a not so decent amp. The joys of being a punk guitarist! :D

I have a Peavy HPEX with a thru neck and got it for $40.00 reason being? Had a cracked neck. I was able to glue the crack and clamp it. Always got a guitar since I can't sell it for much and I like the feel of it compared to most others guitars I have owned.
Back in the 60s I had a friend who broke the neck on his Les Paul Special ( almost identical to an SG (c1959? ) ) near the heel, so it has happened. He explained some kind of weird drop and the neck hit something right in a spot to break there without hitting the headstock. Unfortunately his dad did a horrible job gluing it together with *GASP* epoxy!
The neck construction is of paramount importance to the player because the neck-to-body interface will (must!) affect string vibration in many ways. The neck construction therefore does much to create the overall tone of the guitar. And we (hopefully!) all know what it's like when a guitar you're playing has a tone that just DOES something to you. Your playing can go up a notch or two just because your liking of what's going on thrusts you into wanting to hear something you've never thought to play before. If you go for it, you might hit it and achieve a personal best -- or a string of personal bests.
I know what I WANT to like, what I WANT to be my jam, but I also know what WORKS for me..and they are unfortunately not the same thing. For some reason a good satin, unfinished, bolt-on neck just works for me. I do LOVE a great neck thru and set in but bolt-ons just feel right.
As a woodworker it seems to me that a neck thru design would be the easiest and cheapest way to make a guitar. There is no issue of aligning and attaching the neck. And laminating various pieces would be strong and minimize warping. Small strips of wood are economical compared to large ones.
Unfortunately laminated wood doesn't vibrate and resonate in a nice way for musical instruments. You can find guitars with laminated parts (especially tops) but most of them sound quite dull.

I can't see how resonance from the wood could matter much since the pickups simply produce electric signals generated by magnetism from string movement. E.g. unless you are not plugged in, the resonance won't come through the amp. If it matters in any significant way, it has not been demonstrated in any obvious accepted way.

Earlier I thought the strings and wood would create an interactive system that dampens some frequencies more than others, but it seems that the wood resonates so little that it simply doesn't affect the strings in a noticeable way.
A small update: Late last year, I scored my first neck-through guitar. The price was VERY low, as the guitar arrived at my door after a somewhat-less-than-$200 expenditure. Now I've at least one of all the major neck joints. Oh, and in case you didn't notice, I don't get lazy with the term "neck-through!"😎
Just to touch on what you weren't here to talk about. Wood has nothing to do with the sound of a solid body electric in my opinion. Maybe on a semi hollow it might but probably not even then. It's your string gage and your pick ups wiring and pots. Hand any guitar player any guitar of any wood with his preferred pickups in it and it'll sound like him
Love a neck-through. My last guitar was a USA Soloist, but I'm not spending that on a guitar again. Just ordered a $300 bolt on, and might upgrade pickups at some point. The setup is what matters. This guitar will do what I need it to do.
Jared needs to tell Epi that he wants an all maple one next time, maple body, maple neck - and then go for walnut body/neck for the one after if they'll let him. :-)

Just like a V shaped guitar has better upper fret access over a single cut guitar. That said, none of the neck joint types will hinder your ability to play efficiently. If it was marketing hype companies would only be using neck thru for all mid to high tier guitars, yet Fender most pricey guitars have bolt on necks, so do some ESP guitars (mostly Snapper and SN series), and high tier Ibanez guitars too. Rather than calling it marketing hype i would call it misconception. Many people believe that a bolt-on neck affects sustain and tone in a bad way (which has been proven wrong many times). By the way Dimebag didn't use solid state amps his entire career, it actually used them for some time because there weren't many high gain tube amps around, but he eventually switched to tube amps once the Krank was released.
Electric guitars operate through picking up string vibrations with a magnetic field. "Tonewoods" make absolutely no difference in the sound through the amp as long as the pickups are the same and at the same distance from the bridge and from the strings.
If I tap on the body with my knuckles, I hear a knock from my amp. If I talk into the pickup I hear it in the amp. Different woods vibrate differently. Different body styles sound different. It mostly is the pickups and amp. But if you have enough time to hear it, woods make a difference. A very little difference
The biggest thing for me is when traveling on airplanes the bolt on the neck is better. I can just take the guitar apart and put it in my carryon. Set neck I have to check it and there is a risk of damage or getting lost at baggage claim....that's why my travel guitar has always been a strat.
To my failing and continuously hearing damaged ears (believe it or not, not from loud music but due to health issues and firearms) and peasant-level hearing... A decent guitar and a good guitarist just sound the same regardless of the neck joint method. I guarantee you I wouldn't be able to tell the difference through audio quality.

All things being equal, the neck-thru resonates the fundamental the best, and sounds the best acoustically. But plugged-in the tone is darker because the overtones are less present due to the stronger fundamental, and sustains less because more of the energy from the strings goes into the body. Ironically it is the somewhat flawed design (in terms of acoustic resonance) of the bolt-on which gives Fender-style guitars their 'brighter' tone. Less fundamental = more overtones present in the plugged-in tone.

@Aquatic Mullet The tone of your electric guitar is 95% derived from the pickups and amp. The remaining 5% can be compensated for by adjusting your amp settings. As for sustain, that depends more on the guitar weight than the type guitar. Again, the sustain difference between, say, a Gibson LP and an Ibanez S series is so minimal that the average listener cannot detect in a mix.

I have no preference on the neck joint style. For me it’s how the neck feels. Nothing more, nothing less. A very well explained video on neck joints.
For me it’s purely aesthetic, bolt ons just bugs me after having a neck through with pinstripes.

There's something about a really lightweight neck thru. Set necks too. Like an old SG or Special. Like lightning rods.

I prefer neck thru guitars, like My kiesel (Carvin) Scb 2015.... Unless I'm playing a stratocaster, then I like bolt on necks

A good bolt-on neck won't creak or move at all. That's only a thing if they did a bad job putting it on there.
