At the age of 32 I had a ruptured disc resulting in Cauda Equina Syndrome in 2003. Spent several months in therapy learning to walk again and had to use a catheter for 9 months. I’ve been pain-free for 15 years following my emergency surgery. There’s residual weakness and numbness in my calves and feet but I considered myself fully cured when I was able to stop using the catheter.

When I had spine problem it took 6 mths for doctors to take me seriously. They weren't happy that they have to sent me to do mri.. I cried for all that time. After 2 mths mri.. They said 'oh yeah, it looks bad.' same for my ankle torn ligament. That took a year! 'yeah, it looks bad.' doctors are unreliable.

So 10/10 excruciating pain especially when I try to stand up. The pain is worse when I'm up and my legs try to buckle at the knee. I've always had back pain but this is beyond any pain I've ever felt. Sciatica pain is just horrible. I can’t walk now due to the pain. Can make maybe 10 steps, hopping on my good leg. Going to doctors for therapy. I can drive my car, but I need a wheelchair going into the hospital. All I do is try to find a position where pain is only at level 2 or 3. One wrong move and I’m at level 10. Pain meds are very important and never strong enough…

Your pelvic region will be fragile for a while since you just had a baby so REST and TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF! I totally know what your going through and its so painful but my symptoms basically healed within a week after birth (until I messed up and hiked down a mountain with a wall tent last week... it was on a sled I didn't even lift it but punching through the snow I think did me no favors ahah) so just remember the miracle your body performed not too long ago and dont push it. Thoroughly amused at the “go to urgent care” comment. I have numbness in my groin, down my leg/shin. Went to the ER and was sent packing after a shot of muscle relaxer. It has been 3 weeks now and i’m still about 2 weeks out from getting my MR scans done. Add another few days to a week to get back into the doctor after that. You get the picture. Meanwhile, walking is becoming harder and harder. Sleep is near impossible, dorsiflexion is paralyzed and life sucks.
Here’s hoping I don’t have permanent nerve damage by the time somebody actually helps me instead of peddling referrals and prescriptions.

Subsequently, Drs diagnosed myeloma from a blood test. So if symptoms are getting progressively worse, it is possible that you may have myeloma which can be detected with a simple blood test. My legs and feet go really numb just getting up from sleep and walking across the house.
I even have nerve impingement in my neck that causes my shins to tingle when I look down with my head. Not a single doctor will do anything to help.

Had Cauda Equina about a year ago. Had been in agonising pain for months got off sofa and my leg pain got a lot worse despite my leg feeling a little numb at the same point. Following morning went to the hospital as saddle region was also numb. Everthing was so numb I was no longer in pain so that was a bonus. I was using a zimmer frame to walk by end of the day. Three days later I was operated on (would have been that day but hospital looked at old mri). Luckily for me and the hospital given the mistake over 6 months I regained full usage of everthing but took lots of physio. Only slight different is a spot of numbness on one leg. So glad I recognised the symptoms and went straight to the hospital even if thier mistake did not help. The scary bit was when I eventual got surgery and he read the detail for consent he said you probably won't regain function you have currently lost, glad he was wrong.

I had cauda equina and the symptoms I had were slightly different I stopped passing urine and had pain coming round into my pelvis, groin and down the front of my thigh. My Dr told me I had a urine infection! Went on holiday, came back early, saw a different Dr and was rushed to the SGH in Glasgow for emergency surgery. I was 27 and I've been left with permanent nerve damage on my right side. If I hadn't been so ill, I would have taken her to court for negligence. Same with disability, I was refused it because according to someone who worked in an office my condition would get better. By the time I was 38 I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis and have used a cane since. I recently found out that I have in my cervical spine, reduced lordosis, c5/6 and c6/7 have degenerative changes. Retrolosthesis at l5/s1. L3/l4, l4/l5 and l5/s1 bulging discs, severe spinal stenosis at l5/s1 and bulging discs in my thoracic spine. That was all there in my scan from 5 years ago when they diagnosed the stenosis but never told me about the other signs of degeneration. I have very little faith in the medical profession here in the Scotland. I found these things out from a trauma specialist! I'm so thankful for the exercises that you put up, between them, my yoga and my massages I just manage to get out a couple of days a week for a wee while!

See the doctor sooner or later? Most of us can't get an appointment with a doctor, especially a physiatrist, for weeks, sonetimes months. Worse, some places like Kaiser Permanente have Radiologists who, as per Kaiser, take "10 to 14 "Business days" to read, interpret and sign MRI. It's beyond ridiculous.

I’ve gone to my doctor 3 times within 2weeks the first time they prescribed steroids by mouth and a nerve med to take at night which didn’t nothing for me. I went back again and they gave me a injection in my butt cheek which didn’t nothing. I went back the other day and they gave me muscle relaxers and referred me to physical therapy and physical medicine. Aug 24 physical medicine and Aug. 26 physical therapy start for me. Wish me luck as i lay here in pain typing.

Mckenzie method helped alot more with the pain than all the meds I was given. I stopped Gabapentin bc it gave me vertigo, which made everything worst. Plus it didn't help one bit. Every other med prescribed did nothing (except the opium) helped with pain. I also tried cupping, because my legs were feeling hard and stiff, it helped with the hardness. He saw a bad curve forming in the low back and adjusted me all over . I needed all over adjustments based on my XRays . The pain relief was immediate and I overdid it around the house because I could move again so freely without pain for the first time in 3 weeks . Now my low back is frozen in pain . It was hard ti get out of bed this morning. I laid around all day resting yesterday. The more rest I get , the worse it hurts. Can you recommend something I can do to stretch away the pain ? Or light exercises ? I’m going back to see him at 8:30 when he opens tomorrow. I just want to enjoy my last day off . Moving too much hurts . But laying around will guarantee I will hurt worst tomorrow. Thanks guys ! 🤗

    Hi Bob and Brad
I'm a 50 year old male who since 2014 has had a problem and lower back pain.
I work Polishing marble floors that include a twisting motion since 2007 and for 5 year before this I worked in a factory lifting marble and granite 8 hours a day.
4 days ago I was in my kitchen on my knees sorting my tool box out for tools I needed to do a job and I simply bent forward and my left side of my lower back went into spasm and for a couple of days I was in extreme pain and now as I write this I am better but my back went out so easily.
Should I see a back specialist to check me out?
I did go to the ER room and the doctor said that I should give up my job.
He prescribed pain and anti inflammation medication but this has happened a few times since 2014.
I take extreme caution when I'm working Polishing floors but when I'm working I'm constantly twisting my back from left to right..
    What should I do?
I can't quit my job but I'm not getting any younger and when I'm in bed and if I move a certain way my back goes into spasm.
Any advice would be most welcome and appreciated

I'm 22 now but back in high school when I was 17 got sciatica. In high school I went to the gym most the time and played a lot sports to keep me busy. But one day I was doing legs specifically "dead lifting" and I pulled my back.. went to the doctors the next day and found out I had sciatica and herniated disk. In my case when my sciatica happen it felt like a sharp pain down my leg which pretty much made my whole entire leg numb for 4-6 months.
It took about 4-6 months for me to fully recover from it. Back when I was in high school I would walk around the school to go to my regular classes but in PE class I would usually sit out and going up the stairs was a challenge. Especially bending, turning my body, and getting up in the morning were the worst.
After about 1 month or 2 with sciatica I would just try to just walk for about 10 mins, do some stretches to help relax the pain. Month 3-4 I slowly start to feel less "tingling" down my right leg and has more feeling to it so I would so some exercises and stretches to help it. As month 5-6 came my pain in my leg was less and it was no longer a sharp pain down my leg. More like tingling down my leg. Month 6-7 I slowly got back into my daily exercises.
its been 4 years since my sciatica has been that bad but I still remember the pain I had to go through for the months. I know I still have sciatica and the fact that it never goes away sucks. To this day Sometimes I would feel pinching in my back when I bend. Sometimes it bothers me sometimes it doesn't but overall I can say I fully recovered from it. I have feeling in my right leg and can bend to an extent but not where it makes my back hurt.

I could not stand up straight. It was a stiff feeling. Like I would try to stand up straight but something happened that stopped me from being able to , in the form of extreme pain. All movements were very painful. I was bed ridden for a few days to a week then I went back to work but I had severe pain when I stood up and I had to shift from hip to hip constantly for relief. Needless to say went for an mri and on the report they declared I needed immediate treatment and the back surgeon said i needed immediate surgery. My disc had exploded and I had fragments embedded in something I can’t remember name he said. Had surgery on my l5 and I have had pain ever since and that was 9 years ago but now something has happened again and I’m having pain in lower back where it goes to my outside hips and I can’t move my legs sometimes as if it’s locked up. Dang looking at some of the comments here. A lot of you need to get second opinions. A doctor shouldn't be ignoring your concerns. However, they also shouldn't be immediately DOOM AND GLOOM. Now for my story:
Last week I literally tried to jump out of bed when i woke up(I was feeling happy i had a 4 day weekend coming up). When I quickly hiked my knees up to my chest I felt the worst feeling I've had in my life. I double over in pain, I couldnt stand up. If i could reach my gun at that moment I would've strongly considered ending it.
In 15 min that excruciating pain that shot down my right leg subsided into an almost unbearable pain similar to pulling a quad. Now I'm 39, and extremely active and fit so i thought that's what it was, i went to hard on leg day the day before. So I treated it like that, rested the leg, ice packs and compression. After a day of that i added walking around for at least 10 minutes, I also went to a sport injury place, took some xrays which didnt show anything obvious like bone spurs, but they DID notice my L4-L5 disc could be bulging, a CT scan would tell more. Right then and there i new i had severe sciatic nerve damage. I started electrotherapy and back adjustments. Started physical therapy and changed how I sleep. Within 2 days most of the effects of acute pain were gone. Except I had numbness in my right leg below my knee and noticed my knee would buckle sometimes and felt weak.
This Tuesday I went to an emergency doctor for another pair of eyes. Well after describing my symptoms, they deemed a CT scan "medically necessary" so insurance covered it(yay). But their diagnosis made it sound like i was about to die any minute "You have a protrusion in L4-L5 and bad swelling in S1. You will not recovery from this, you need surgery here's this expensive neurosurgeon we work with."
I am standing there showing that i can balance on one leg, on my toes without locking my knee, with no pain. They wrote me prescriptions for cyclobenzaprine and prednisone and told me to see the specialist.
As an aid to my healing, I am taking the prednisone as directed, and continuing my chiro and PT as normal. I am not taking any other meds. Its been 1 week since, I still have no pain and my leg numbness is slowly going away, its only about a 4 inch patch on the front of my shin bone.
I expect to make a full recovery in 4-6 weeks and will taper up my leg exercises again with help from my PT to improve form. Also, I found out my right leg is longer than the other and i got a left leaning scoliosis, so that knowledge will help me in the future.
I guess I got lucky, but Im not counting on luck anymore, I am going to be more careful stretch regulary before and after work outs and train myself to bend at the hip more.

Going to the ER does not help. They immediately treat you as if you are trying to get pain meds EVEN IF YOU ALREADY GET THEM!
So you have to go to specialists but have to have lots of money because even if you have insurance in won't cover much for things like this.
I am miserable but with thousands spent and no real help I have given up on getting help.

Mine is the worst at night and early in the morning but goes away after a few hours of being on my feet. You never indicated why this could be more serious. What could it be? Laying down and sitting in certain positions really irritates it.

Back pain is usually worse when you get up and move around. Best to see your doctor to where they can get an MRI ordered and blood work done to see if something is occurring within the bone itself.

That is unfortunate, I've had doctors brush away my issues like that as well. My Sciatica pain is mostly in my left leg, but sometimes in my foot and a little in my back.
Walking for a hour or so used to make it go mostly away, now it is excruciating to walk for even just a few minutes and just doing even minor stuff like playing with my pets is painful.
The best advice I can offer is keep trying different stretches that these and other Sciatica videos show until one relieves some pain for you, and do them every time you need some relief.
That has helped a bit for me, but it is still painful, just not as painful.
I hope you find something that helps, I wish you the best!

      I’m sorry for you.
Look up the symptoms of Sciatica.
Then look up exercises to relieve it.
Bob and Brad have some videos on that.

It’s been two months and almost no pain but I still get sore sometimes. Walking, stretches, and icing/heat therapy. First two weeks were the worst. Even though it’s painful you gotta force yourself to try and get up as much as possible, eventually you get the strength to walk.

I've had lower back pain for some time, but recently after working in the yard and cleaning the garage, I developed severe back pain in my lower back down to my left side so bad I couldn't stand to put my weight on my foot. I went to two different clinics and finally to a local ER and a week later, I'm still not any better. I was given pain meds and muscle relaxers, but they have done very little good. It's been a nightmare with little relief. Don't know where to turn now. I can barely get around because of the intense pain. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
