Whenever someone complains about how making execution more user friendly makes a game scrubby, I direct them to this game so they can see the opposite extreme.
It nice to see how Ryu got tougher over time. He went from a young man with a glass jaw who couldn't reliably throw a fireball, to an extremely shredded warrior with a majestic beard.

How the HELL did Capcom decide to make a sequel to this trainwreck? WHO said "ok this is a great game guys we should make a sequel focussing on Ryu"
They didn't . After they made final fight one, capcom told their team to make a final fight 2. Instead, they used what they learned making final fight to make street fighter 2.
+vonschuhart That makes more sense than that the direct sequel to the worst fighting game suddenly should become the best fighting game ever made. SF was more or the less the first 1v1 fighter with health bars. There were lots of 1v1 games like Way of the Exploding First, International Karate, IK+ on various 8/16-bit computers at the time. Common amongst them all was that the first hit resets the fighters and scores a point.

Roronoa Zoro No. I was "back in the 80s". Games didn't look this bad. Or play this bad. You had perfectly fine fighting games with 8-way joystick controls+fire button on 8-bit and 16-bit computers. This was just an unplayable trainwreck. But it was a totally different thing, no health bars, super meters and such.
Search for International Karate/IK+ or Way of the Exploding Fist on youtube for examples of good games in the genre. Or Yie Are Kung Fu even.

The backgrounds in this game are actually really nice.
I remember when this game first came out and there were crowds of people at the arcade surrounding it watching it being played or waiting for their turn. We were fascinated by it because it was something never seen before.

im super late on commenting this but if you rewatch the first match ever Against Sagat, Max... Not only that he got robbed of the first round since he got the first hit on sagat for round 1, and ended in a tie. but there was no 4th round (Final round) the game just said "Fuck you max! try again!" and robbed him completely out of his first try against sagat. GOD im so livid! that would have been incredible seeing a 1st try into sagat and IMO i think he first tried it lol

OH GOD SAGAT'S THEME MY EEEEEEAAAAAAARS
People that haven’t played the game (and some people that have, I reckon) might be curious why this game feels so unresponsive, even with a modern fight stick.
The issue lies in the way the game handles button inputs; unlike later Street Fighter games, and most video games, SFI Ryu attacks based on when you release the button rather than when you press it. This is why the normals feel so sluggish; the game is going off when the button is released. Knowing this makes the specials significantly easier.
This counter intuitive system is almost certainly a result of the original arcade control scheme for the game, in which there were huge, stiff buttons that for punch and kick. Hitting the buttons harder would result in a stronger punch and kick. Thus, the game needed to wait until you’d “finished” pressing the button before it could determine the attack. While later SFI cabinets would introduce the now iconic six button layout, this did not fix the release based inputs.
Sidenote, if you can get the janky command down, Shoryuken in this game is genuinely one of the most fucked up moves in fighting game history. Three hits that each do 30% (90% if they all connect), unblockable, has a ton of invincibility frames, and hits on frame 1. Absurd.
