Great presentation, Jim. As a hobbyist, the question "Why bother?" is even more relevant, for I know 'll never see (or expect) a dollar to come from the time and expense put into this wonderful hobby.
Thank you, David. I can certainly understand that but appreciate you saying it’s a wonderful hobby. It really is and every time we get to enjoy it is time well spent!
Great points. Especially the no social media and printing your own work. I’ve done both and can completely say that these two things made the biggest difference. Shoot for you and enjoy. Have a great Christmas and new years!
You are very welcome. I knew it wouldn’t be a video that gets a lot of views, but hoped at least a few that saw it would need to hear it. Glad it was helpful for you. Thank you for watching and letting me know!
Sir, I love that sweater. Looks like something a Green Beret would wear on a Psy-Op or some rugged outdoorsman like yourself would wear while traversing the badlands of hike trails or the local park. Its there a specific name for these type of sweater? Just stumbled on your channel. I'm sure there's more to it than good looking sweaters.
Haha! I’m traveling right now so I don’t have all the details but the company that makes it is fjallraven. They’re popular in Europe but quite pricey. I have a friend that worked for the company and I got a steal of a discount so I stocked up while I could (they no longer work there).
The reality of being a photographer on social media is that you really aren't a photographer. That is to say a person really hasn't made a career in photography but rather they made a career in entertainment. So many videos start with "Hello my name is so and so and I'm a landscape photographer." and I'm like, no you're not you're a youtuber. Take that avenue away and they'll be broke. Most real working pro photographers I know have the worst social media presence because they are out there actually doing it not dreaming it.
Fair points Jason. My only push back would be that some pros do social media well. Clyde butcher comes to mind. Then again, Clyde has a whole team, so that certainly helps. I wouldn’t be ready to say somebody can’t be a pro and be good at social media, I just think they’re often a different skillset (one being an art and the other, to your point, more entertainment/branding). I certainly won’t knock anybody who can do it, it’s just not me.
@@MrNegative for sure and nothing against anybody who finds success on youtube or other social media. I just wanted to point out that isn't what success as a photographer should be judged by. Clyde is a good example of what I'm talking about he is a photographer that happens to do social media well and he has found success with it no doubt but his body of work was made mostly before social media existed. He's a photographer first. Good videos, glad I found your channel.
You’re spot on. I just wanted to call it out so I’m not a big fat hypocrite with my UA-cam channel haha. Clyde actually did a series on how he and his wife started their gallery/preserve. It’s incredible. His photography is amazing but seeing that made me have even that much more Respect for him and his wife.
Great points. A solid theme project is very helpful too.
That’s a great idea. I may need to give that a shot. Also, love the name haha

You’re 100% correct. Merry Christmas and happy new years to you as well!
Needed this, thank you!!!

I agree 100%. Thank you.
Thank you for the feedback, Phillip. I almost didn’t post it because I didn’t want to sound “preachy”. Glad you enjoyed it.
great video! Anyone can take this perspective and apply it to a lot of areas in their life.
Golf came to mind a lot while making this video…

@@MrNegative you're not a hypocrite at all. You give some good advice as far as I'm concerned.
