Examining The Start of Halo’s Saddest Story

  • There are some great opening missions in Bungie's Halo series.
    The Pillar of Autumn in Halo: Combat Evolved, Cairo Station in Halo 2, and even Dawn in Halo 4 and Warship Gbraakon in Halo Infinite, but none marks the start of a sadder story than Winter Contingency in Halo Reach.
    In this video, I analyse everything Winter Contingency's level design and gameplay to its story, setting and atmosphere, to try and explain why it's such a unique experience, while also drawing comparisons to Long Night Of Solace, Exodus, Lone Wolf and other missions in Halo Reach's campaign.

    I absolutely love how you pointed out how Six’s helmet at the starts seems to depict defeat, where the truth is the absolute opposite. Beautiful!
    Also I overwhelmingly agree with you with the dates. I’ve found it so easy to forget how long time as passed. It would REALLY show just how tough Spartans are to go weeks likely without food, water, and sleep.

    6:20 I would argue that this is Noble Team's training kicking in. Before they encounter the enemy, they do seem distressed at the possibility of the Covenant, but once they had "been engaged" they shut down their emotions and focused on the mission.
    Perhaps a way to get the emotion you wanted is if they had been accompanied by a civilian or a Marine, who promptly lost their shit when you see Covenant

    For those who never noticed, there's a cloaked Elite in the distance at the start of that first level (on the path you take); he's presumably a lookout as he legs it when you get in sight of him. You can kill him if you're quick, but sadly there's no extra dialogue; your teammates just walk over his dead body whilst discussing the possibility of Covenant being present.

    Oh boy.. This is gonna be a long one, sorry.
    The very first scenes, showing the glassed planet, and most importantly, your helmet - Not even just Noble 6's helmet. *Your* helmet. - made it painfully apparent what kind of tale this would be.
    *This was a tale about how you died.*
    Even if the sandbox was not the best of the series, and even if the Fall of Reach has been covered so many fucking times, it's just a nightmare to get an idea as to what's canon and what's not, this opening was what sold me on the game, and why it stands out, even amongst Halo titles. Project Zomboid's famous, or depending on who you ask, infamous line "This is how you died" very much fits Reach. I fucking love this game above all other Halo titles, simply because of the story. Or maybe I'm a sucker for nihilism.
    The most saddening moment, however? No, don't think I quite agree personally. I think many might also agree with me on the fact that Jorge's sacrifice was the single most gutwrenching moment, especially on later playthroughs.
    Jorge-052's death hits home harder than anything else in the game for me, for a multitude of reasons.
    Firstly, he's a Spartan II. The III's, which the rest of Noble Team are comprised of, are very much Spartans, but were originally intended to be disposable in a sense. A means to stall for time, in a losing war, and have more Spartans at the front. Whilst the Spartan II's were truly a foe most from the Covenant would dread facing, the sheer cost and difficulties creating a single Spartan II made them impossible to create more of by the time the Covenant invaded. Halo 4 and Infinite also shed some light as to how some Spartan II's might seem more like living machines, than men and women, likely caused from their indoctrination at a young age, ruthless training, and traumatic surgery procedures. A Spartan III might give you the impression they're not as 'inhumane' as some would think, but a Spartan II may not give you that same idea about them. Halo's 4 and Infinite sell this better than I ever could, honestly. Look into those for better context and explanations.
    Jorge, even as a Spartan II, the least 'human' of all Spartan Generations, proved to be the single most human character out of the bunch, even in Noble Team. Jorge-052 stands out because of his humanity. He shows grief when his homeworld, somewhere he hadn't really grown up in, but still considers home, just due to where he was born, is being ravaged by the ruthless aliens that have come for only the slaughter of humanity. He cracks jokes and quips towards Noble 6, like "Need a ride, Spartan?" Always gets a smirk from me. And he's been seeing combat longer than most of Noble Team had.
    So his death just isn't simply another Spartan having fallen in battle. It's the loss of both the most experience on your team, sure, but the most human. We lost a hero.
    And that's what brings me to the second and final point, and it's just the crushing fact that it was all in vain. Jorge died thinking he had saved the planet. All he managed was to destroy one ship of several, that were headed in to unleash a hell unlike any other you would've encountered at this point. It's oddly fitting that a Son of Reach, with his death, heralded the end of Reach itself.
    Missions got more desperate, you could see the chaos and devastation the Covenant wrought upon the world. Your team starts falling, one by one. Even you are doomed to die on this planet, but not before you literally deliver hope to the Pillar of Autumn. The planet that once looked lush, and was bustling with life, had become a hellscape, all right after that bomb went off.
    And whilst it's of some comfort to know that Jorge would not know what would happen next, he still gave his life on the assumption that he had saved reach. Instead, he died for no true advantage over the enemy, for what was to come afterwards.
    Thanks for coming to me Ted Talk.

    The first firefight, in my opinion, does have a setpiece to it. When you initially arrive, you see the lone Skirmisher yell out. By the time you get to the ground floor, a few Grunts have arrived in the courtyard. As you keep moving, you notice more and more enemies in the area where it initially looked like there was only the one. For me, this totally was a setpiece since it completely changed my understanding of the threat which the Covenant posed and the scale of the invasion.

  • @terribleterror5786
    @terribleterror5786 Рік тому +63

    The build-up to the covenant appearing in the first area is also great for because it has a double effect.
    If you are a new player who is playing Reach as your FIRST Halo (most people MCC do this because of the way the games are sorted), it is a great way to introduce Covenant as this merciless threat shown by the dead troopers and hiding farmers.
    For veteran players back in 2010, who already knew all about the Covenant from previous halos, this is still a good re-introduction, but this mostly serves as the introduction for the new enemy: the Skirmisher. The Skirmishers are not only the first enemies you hear and see in this game, but you also see one howling on a rooftop really putting the focus on it for a second.

      In the lore, there’s a lot of Hungarian natives on Reach, which is why George also speaks it. When he speaks to that civilian, he says the exact same in Hungarian before repeating it in English.
      I’m not sure why Bungie chose this, but there were a lot of Hungarian settlers originally in the US, so I assumed it was some kind of mirrored history approach in terms of colonization 🤷‍♂️

    For me Winter Contingency in the best Intro level in the Halo saga. As you told in the video, it set the tone and the gameplay for the entire game. You start slow with an investigation mission; the tension grows until you find the enemy; the gameplay became open and you have the freedom to choose the path; at the end you experience a CQC battle. Everything in one package. The first contact of Covenant is not emphasize like in Halo CE or Halo 2 but the focus is more on the teammates.
    The level of details is high as always in Bungie games. For example in the torture room, you can find the footprints of Skirmishers and Elites.
    Fun facts:
    - with Haunted skull on, you can see the skull inside your helmet in the intro cutscene;
    - the forerunner symbol seen on the fishermen outposts are very similar to the ones in the AotCR level.
    As always, excellent video and looking forward for the new ones!!
    P.S. Due to your high experience with Halo, i think it will be very interesting a theme video about one gameplay aspect across the games. For example, best Tank/flight/sniper sessions in Halo Bungie games.

    So something about this level that just stood out to me as I watched the video: I get the feeling that part of the design in this mission of going from wide open slopes and valleys down to tight corridors is to funnel the player into a claustrophobic, uncomfortable and even anxious situation in a new place. The music in the last section accentuates this for me because of the pace (and maybe my own impatience) at trying to take out the first zealot before it can run into the hallway...and I think that tension, and anxiety carries over into the rest of the story where we feel like we get a few gasps of air, then promptly gut-checked as we lose more and more all around us.
    Setting us up for that isolated end of the game rather than the open, bombastic and triumphant trajectories of the original trilogy.
    That said, I do tend to put myself through Legendary campaigns *first*.....so there's always an underlying level of tension in new levels for me 😅 (Flashes back to H2 Regret)

    I genuinely feel like winter contingency would be a much better mission if the encounters were reversed. You enter the communications relay, get ambushed by the elites, fight your way out into the courtyard, then into the open outdoor area to rescue surviving troops.
    The elite ambush cutscene is great, and would make for a much more striking intro to the covenant than just seeing some skirmishers and grunts standing around in a field.
    And the current buildup to the covenant reveal is hard to really take seriously when
    A: youre standing outside amidst some gorgeous scenery in the middle of the day
    And
    B: you likely already know its gonna be the covenant
    Moving the tension building segment to inside a claustrophobic dark abandoned comms array could be much more effective and atmospheric

    I wonder if the cutscene with the elites towards the end was originally supposed to be the reveal of the Covenant in Reach. Think about it like this:
    1) Slow burn where you slowly piece together that something is VERY wrong, and that it's the Covenant.
    2) ELITES! Big surprise, intense cutscene, gets you hyped.
    3) Fight your way through Covenant. (This probably gets moved up in my hypothetical scenario because it's hard to keep that intense pace up the whole time, especially if you want to introduce the enemies slowly, starting without Elites.)
    4) Ending. Probably the courtyard firefight. You would need a bit of a set piece moment to cap this off satisfactorily, and I'm not sure exactly what springs to mind. Maybe air support comes in and wipes out the Covenant, etc.

    I recently got MCC because I've never fully finished all of the Halo games. I started with reach, and it was a blast. Every mission was very fun, and while there were a couple dull moments, it was miles better than what came next. Combat evolved was... Bad. It 100% had its moments, and the atmosphere of the game was great. That flashlight constantly running out while I'm fighting the flood was extremely scary and I loved it. Whatever the case, the game is just so damn repetitive. If I had to define insanity, I'd probably say "the library". The difference in quality and level design between Halo CE and Reach is insane. Obviously CE is older so I cut it some major slack, but I just love where Bungie left halo off before 343 put their stinky hands all over it.

      Ha this will give you a chuckle given your comments - Combat Evolved is actually my favourite. Of course, there's a certain amount of bias given it was the first game in the series I played, but man alive is the first half of that game (up to end of 343 Guilty Spark) absolutely fudging brilliant. Second half I agree is majorly repetitive and has some big issues, but the first is one of my favorite runs of levels in any game. It's so beautifully paced.

    • @NotARussianDisinfoBot
      @NotARussianDisinfoBot Рік тому +1

      Heresy! Just kidding. I really like Reach. CE was my first Halo game, and it absolutely blew my mind and I would argue revolutionized FPS games. Compared to games now, it can seem too old and boring. I do think it did an awesome job of storytelling and creating feelings of awe in the player, though. The feeling of being lost in space on a giant mystical hula hoop absolutely blew my mind as a 10 year old and greatly influenced my imagination for the rest of my life. That's something that I really didn't get from the other titles as much, and definitely not from the 343 era.

  • @torb-no
    @torb-no Рік тому +2

    One of the things I really loved about Reach is how a lot of its level design and gameplay harkened back to CE. Not for sake of nostalgia, but honestly, I think it just works so well. CE didn't have that many specific epic moments (like 3), but it just had a lot of really solid encounters, and for me, this level demonstrates that principle for Reach as well. I also love how it got some of the more open-level design you saw in CE as well.
    That being said, I still agree that there maybe could be more of an emotional crescendo when they discover the Covenant. I mean, it's probably realistic that the spartans, who are highly trained to take them on probably aren't that shocked, but it would still have worked so much better if they reacted more.
    AFAIK the graphics in the MCC is slightly subdued compared to the original, though that might have been fixed at this point. It's still absolutely less vibrant than previous games.
    I also think maybe you should use the reticle position that the games shipped with. Reach shipped with lowered and I think that shows a lot of its map off better (it was designed with that in mind after all). That being said, it's up to you… and maybe I'm overreacting because I miss it in Infinite. 😅
    Thanks for an entertaining video as always!

    • @BenPlaysGames
      @BenPlaysGames  Рік тому +2

      No worries Torb!
      Absolutely, Reach feels really CE like in places and generally feels like the most open since that game. And, I live for big, open environments in Halo, so it's always been one of my favourites to return to.
      It just seems so weird that there's ten minutes or so of pretty decent build up and then not much fanfare when the Covenant appear. I always think back to 343 Guilty Spark and how they built tension before you're ambushed in that room when everything goes bonkers, a much better way to do it.
      I also did not know about the colour changes or the change to the reticle at all, so thanks for pointing that out - will tweak for my next one on the game. Is there anything else like that I should be aware of across the MCC?

    • @torb-no
      @torb-no Рік тому +1

      @@BenPlaysGames It's kinda hard to know since I don't know what you're aware of. But I know a UA-camr called why (or something like that) has these comparison videos showcasing differences between MCC and originals.
      As far as graphics go, CE graphics should be pretty close to OG at this point. I believe 2 has gotten pretty close. There's still work to be done on 3, ODST and Reach. In either case, just playing it on the latest MCC version will net you the latest graphics fixes anyway, so that approach is probably fine. It should be noted that some of the graphical glitches in Reach in particular are highly affected by resolution, so playing something closer to OG (pretty low) resolution at this moment in time will afaik give you are more authentic image. Anyway, don't sweat it.
      As for reticle placement, here's how the originals were:
      Centred: CE, 5, Infinite
      Lowered: 2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4
      I'm still waiting for lowered setting for Infinite! It would look so good!

    I honestly will go to my grave being able to remember Reach’s opening drum beats. Suffice to say Reach is a beloved game to nearly everyone. Honestly, as pathetic as this is, it truly made me happy back then. Me and my best friend would always start “clans”, then download base maps off the file share and modify them to our liking, like an ad-hoc Minecraft. The customs, the voice chat, Invasion, being deathly afraid of Inheritors or anyone past standard military ranks… good old times, and I’m thankful that we atleast have these communities online to share each other’s memories

    I love the detail of the elite going straight to Kat to kill her. I forget the specifics, but I’ve had a working theory that her death later in the game is premeditated by that same Elite in the drop ship that shoots her. I think it was a punishment from the fanatical Zealot class elite group, the same group that was trying to find religious artifacts on Reach, which is in the data that those dead scientists had discovered.
    Also, in the cutscene where Kat dies, she misses hitting the elevator button on her first try, accidentally ensuring she was more isolated from the other Spartans when they picked her off. I definitely think the Zealots were hunting her because it all seems too convenient. Why didn’t the elites shoot the other Spartans? They had no weapons.
    I hope my meaning comes through, this idea has been bouncing around my head for years and I’ve never seen anybody else ever mention it

    I found myself disliking this level quite a lot. Felt that there are major inconsistencies with the abilities of the Spartans and the lore of Spartans
    1) with their neural interface, Spartans do not need to put their finger to their helmet to answer a radio. They simply need to think of their squad mate for the suit to open a communication link. They do not need to put finger to helmet like a 20th century trooper
    2) If Carter has read all the files of noble 6, he should be aware of how capable noble 6 is. He does not need to tell noble 6 that break is over. That line is just cringy and unnecessary.
    3)Spartans can jump from quite great heights. The part where the pilot having to drop the Spartans into the LZ so close to the ground at the relay stations is totally unnecessary. They can simply jump off the falcon and start engaging the covenant, or to jump onto the walkways running close to the roof and start flanking, and what we got instead was Carter instructing the pilot to make an unnecessary landing and dragging the cutscenes.
    Nevertheless, the points in the review are all spot on.
