Hello Neil - I had one of these in my box but never used it. Today, after an OK session, I switched to this fly. I am not kidding but on the first drift, I hooked up a 16 inch rainbow. Second cast, I hooked up a similar trout that got away in the fast moving water. 3rd drift, I hooked up a 3rd trout but broke at my tippet ring...I had only one with me on the water so I called it a day and went home. I used a larger size 14, and a 3.2 mm silver bead. It was as a point fly and I had a small pheasant tail on dropper tag that before in the day was catching all the trouts. When used with this fly, they ignored the pheasant tail :). I have never experienced this before. Needless to say that I am watching your video again right now and tying some more in size 14-18 with a set of different color beads (silver, copper, gold & pink) !!!
Hello Stephane, great to hear from you. I share your joy and excitement …… and your disappointment of course. 16” is a fine rainbow.👏🏻 Yes, do carry a few spare tippet rings - I keep mine on a small ‘safety pin’ 🧷 in a small bag. It takes up very little room and as you will know, they are of no use to you in the car or at home. I have no problem with you trying out different colour beads, although the subtlety of the other attractor parts of the fly, may be lost with a pink bead? Hey, I have never tied this fly with a pink bead, so I’ll leave it to you to experiment for us both. I’m delighted to hear that you have had success with this fly and look forward to receiving further instalments. Good luck and tight lines.👌
The pink bead I am using is a light metallic pink that has UV property so I am curious to test it’s added properties to the fly. Plan is to replicate the frenzy I experienced with the original fly and switched to variations to assess effectiveness 😊
Hello John, great to hear from you. I agree that you may want to up the size, but don’t ignore a #18 if things are a bit tough. We know that larger fish are not adverse to a small offering. Thank you for your generous comment. 👍
Hi there! This is a super little pupa/perdigón nymph. I fished this as a nymph for dry dropper in a fishing video - I actually lost too many fish on this visit, but caught a few on the nymph. At the beginning of the video I describe it as ‘nothing special’, but it is!🙈 Here’s a link to that video: ua-cam.com/video/RDHOrwY_LeQ/v-deo.htmlsi=Nmg7iFWnLYy0c-SH
I like this a lot. I find red on a fly fished high in the water column always does well, never thought about the UV , off to tie this now. Thanks Neil.
I love it. That's a winner for sure. The main river I fish is famous for its small flies. Size 28 to 32's. So I'm used to light tippet. That fly will work.
Hello Michael, good to hear from you. I promise you that it catches fish and if it’s a little overcast, all the better. I haven’t had to go lower than a #20, but just fish it how you will. I’m usually on a 7X when I’m fishing this on a dry dropper and the takes can be pretty quick!😉
Helo Neil - really nice tying. Any alternative to the UV rib using Textreme X type UV pearl or is this a must have - I have not been able to find it in USA online providers, only European.
@@russellogden8071 The uv varnish is totally clear and is hardened by a uv light. The uv tinsel creates a rib and is uv reflective. If you do not use the tinsel and just coat it in varnish, you will not have the uv reflection, which is the attractor. 😊
Hello John, thanks for your comment. I can see where you are coming from, although there are many differences! The black body and red tag are very culi roja perdigon, but that’s just about where the similarities end. The Droz is a great little nymph and will catch many fish. Do try out my tying, especially in overcast conditions and I hope that you find it equally, or more, effective. Tight lines.👍
Great fly!! I'll tie it when I am able. Sorry to see the accusations of a rigged drawing. I see the doctor soon, and hope to get the ok for a little bit of fishing!!
Hello Bob, good to hear from you and I hope that the rehabilitation exercises are going smoothly. Yes, I was also sorry to see somebody question my integrity and honesty, but hey, sometimes people are strange that way. That would be really good news if your doctor gave you the ok to get fishing again. Everything in its own time my friend, just be patient.👍
Hello Dale, thank you for your comment. If you have the same ‘tufts’ in your waste bin and want to tie it without the dabs of glue, go ahead! I hope it catches trout for you. Tight lines.🎣
I wouldnt use it because where I life the trout are big here in eastern Canada we use size 12 to 6 hooks forged it seems to be good for small fish though
Hello there, thank you for your comment. I can certainly understand your reticence. Although I do not tie this fly in those sizes, if you have the materials, why not tie one up in proportion, on a 10 or 12 and give it a go? If and when the fishing gets a little difficult, you never know, it might just sneak one out for you? Tight lines. 👍
Hello Joe and thanks for your comment. I haven’t visited the San Juan, but from what I have seen, it can certainly get crowded!🙈 Do give it a try out - size up to you, but nothing too big in my experience. Good luck.👍
It will be a great fly for there in a #20 . One of the reasons I don’t fish there anymore, not just crowded but a lot of zero etiquette fishermen. But still some nice fish.
@@mikekuczynski1552 Mike, I can understand your sentiment entirely! Sometimes you do have a lot of fellow anglers around, but there is no excuse for damn bad form, in fishing or at any other time. Oh would it be, that every angler had the same view as you!👍

I will make a few and try them in size 14 and 16 down under in NZ where my average fish is about 3 lbs. Always a pleasure to watch!.

Hello Mark, indeed, Red is a good colour for brown trout and the UV just gives it the little extra that you want in any fly!!😉
Simple and effective. Well done as always!

Hello Stephane, there will be other UV materials out there that will offer a similar effect, so by all means try one of those.
Niel .I love beans
Hello Russell, I’m very pleased for you - I love them too!!😉
@neilsspanishflybox if your putting uv over perl uv couldnt you just put uv over your perl tincel

Very similar to a pattern I know as a Droz nymph , which I find very effective on the Scottish rivers I fish for both trout and grayling .

what vise is that?
Hello Brian, thank you for your comment. It is a ‘Stonfo Flylab’, made in Italy. Not particularly expensive, but quite functional. 👍
So, mostly glue…and a few tufts of waste from the bin. But mostly glue. I would call this the glue on glue😜

Do you sell flys?

Hello Wayne, thank you for your comment, it’s feels really good to know that I have put a smile on your face.🤷♂️
This should do well on the San Juan tailwater. Going to have to take a trip down and and try it out. I just get frustrated there with crowds.
