Whenever im dperessed or stressed with life, i just listen to this man talk about life the universe and evertyhing, with a nice cup of tea, and i feel alot better. Thank you Stephen Fry
That fact he mentioned how lucky he was to attend University reveals his humility I'm part of the Backadder generation so no stranger to his comic genius An all round nice guy Peace from New Zealand ✌
What a F**king joy and how ludicrously sensible! Never before have I ever hero worshiped and maybe that's saying too much, but as you say Stephen ...admire ! but that doesn't really say enough!
Stephen Fry is one of the rare people who can talk in an undirected manner for 30 minutes, and he's perhaps the only person who, after he's done, I want to hug rather than strangle.
Unfortunately, I have to disagree with him on the point that people who are really good got there through social contacts. The musicians, artists, scientists, etc. who are incredibly incredible usually spend all their time neurotically doing what they are so good at alone. The question is whether that is something you want. Do you want to be the best, the first, the fastest, or rather enjoy a nonsensicle journey with your friends getting lost for hours on a one mile way looking at the daisies?
@qwertyness4 He was during his teens, for credit card theft. He later explained it as probably a result of his bipolarity (manic-depressive), which needed an outlet. He has made a very good documentary on bipolarity in which he addresses it, and his youth, at length. Highly recommend checking it out.
God told Abraham that He would lead a great nation of people and that they will set themselves apart.. "chosen" if you will. That was the outward sign of that covenant.
I understand that. being "forced" to do what your parents say is right.I do.I was raised by what comedian Jim Gaffigan would call a Shiite Catholic and attended Catholic school 1-12th. NOT knocking the Catholic the faith. Mom still kind views me as a "heathen" of sorts cause I know longer go to Catholic mass yet I am also the only one of her 4 kids who goes to church at all.Now when I go to church God pulls up a chair and shoots it to me straight. Its about relationship, not ritual.
C. Hitchens on heroes(regarding a fan of his saying Hitchens was his hero): that's too bad, because when you have a hero you take whatever that person says without questioning it. Not his exact words but smth like that.
So we should respect the mutilation of genitals if someone says thats what they believe?I'll point out that while yes you did include medical purposes and yes he didn't specifically say that he was circumcised for religious purposes (although it was pretty heavily hinted at) you also said that we should respect the religious circumcisions too and that is a disgusting idea. Furthermore, there is almost no evidence that circumcision is medically necessary except in very few, very specific cases.
Ah, while the medical portion may be for those very few, very specific cases, they still happen. Stephen Fry may be (or have been) one of those cases. And while you think it is disgusting to have your foreskin removed for religious purposes, than that's your opinion. However, there are many who think it's right. Such as the Jewish. They believe it is right. And that is their opinion. Those are their views.
Except that the religious force it upon newborn babies who have no say in the matter. If an adult person converted to Judaism and decided to become circumsized, that's his own business. But nobody, religious beliefs be damned, has the right to force that on someone else.

"Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well."
I admire Stephen Fry

My philosophy completely...But may I say Michlette...there is no such thing as A WISE PERSON ...But some of us have more wise moments than others..
i would be every so happy if Stephen Fry found me interesting. I so want to pick his brain, and learn from him.
I think Stephen Fry might be turning into Dumbledore
@Heckytorr then why, may i ask, did you click on a link to a video of him talking?

I try to when I can

We won't think bad of you. Most of us will probably agree.
@qwertyness4 When he was growing up, he was a bit wayward.
@SohnoJam LOL, I do, too.
@xedra You could, I do.
I am not here to debate.. I just wanted to answer his question. I believe in God so I think by your response you don't.

Meh, good point...
0 DISLIKES :D
And? So what if he had his foreskin removed? It was either for religious of medical purposes, and you should respecr that, especially the latter.
I am not sure of the religion reason, but the medical reason might be an infection of some sort.
