Unrelated but FYI, this guest passed away a few months after this interview aired.

Great episode. love the century series. Always a pleasure to listen to mr Bruce Gordon, he is amazing. The F-102 Delta Dagger was also in service in my country Greece as well as in Turkey. I've seen retired F-102s from close, big and imposing aircraft.

The 102s also saw a bit of service during Vietnam in the 60s. They served mainly as bomber escorts for the B-52s. 14 were lost, one of them shot down by a MiG-21.

This channel is a real hidden gem. It's so hard to find good aviation podcasts, and the fact that it concerns military craft across so many time periods directly from the personnel that actually operated those aircraft is amazing.

42:10 delta wings tend to have good low speed control due to the vortex lift they have, and also tend to bleed off airspeed much quicker than other wing shapes...they usually have good supersonic performance(very thin wing thickness to cord length Ratio), good deceleration when increasing aoa and good slow speed control( of course given enough power and low enough wing loading) but suffer more in sustained turn performance compared to other wings(due to their higher lift to drag ratio)☝️

32:20 I was not quite doing Mach 2.5 but when I was maybe 17, practicing forced landings during a training area solo over Western Sydney (Australia) in a PA-38 Tomahawk, I got back to the flying school the CFI (Chief flying instructor) was having a chuckle and asked how low below 500ft AGL was I gliding the plane to before re-applying power? I pretended to be dumb and said I understood the instruction was to practice down to 500ft as displayed on the altimeter, elevation out there is just over 200ft. Anyway, the farm I was using as my target for the landing was near an egg laying chicken factory. They got my rego, called the regulators who called the flying school. They were convinced I scared the chooks so much that hardly any of them laid eggs the next day.

landing the delta dagger on icy runways must have required balls of steel. a good question for next episode would be if these aircraft had any sort of anti skid (and how efective it was).

Taking of air shows and smoking. A friend of mine was a tech with the 2009 CF-18 Demo Team and he was doing an A Check after the pilot had flown a member of the media. The jet was being fuelled at the time and after the reporter got out of his flightsuit, he lit a cigarette. My eyes went wide open, then my friend saw this, and kindly asked him to put it out. Not to mention the "no smoking" signs on the fuel truck. Lol

I worked at an FBO for many years and can tell you that we have done the throwing of a lit match into jet fuel and yup, it won’t light. For training the fire department needed use a propane blow torch just to get the fuel to boil on the surface and then become a fine mist/vapor before it would light off. Much the same as diesel which is in the same hazmat category.

Awesome! Although it's kind of a shame you weren't able to get into the SAGE Radar & system, since that's (what I've read) the half of the system that makes the 102 as effective as it was. But that might be another hour program. I will always see the 102 and 106 as "Futuristic" looking, even by today's standards. It is indeed interesting how the very basic shape of these two could be seen in the F-117.

And I have no right or will say something bad about the podcast but please write the time stamp for the guest where it starts.

17:42 that is the exact reasons we take 2 wings over a center line in DCS flight sim
    less drag and more fuel
    .
and i think we figured out the drag thing by experimenting in the sim..... so DCS must be pretty close lol

I remember trying to do an AWACS intercept in the Eagle in DCS once, and decided to bring just a centerline tank because it'd be faster. Hit the sound barrier like a brick and didn't go anywhere till I jettisoned that thing. Very eye opening. Good to know that the configuration that looks better also works better! 👍

Huh? The F-117 owes nothing to the F-102 or 106. The bottom conformation is totally different, even the Delta wing is radically different. The 117 owes more to the RCS modelling program than it does to the F-102. The guy retired in the 70's and knows nothing whatsoever about the 117. You might want to get some of the Lockheed flight and design engineers out here to chat about the design considerations in the 117. That approximate delta wing configuration on the 117 arose out of design some trade-offs between radar return geometry and aerodynamic lift. Seems like a nice guy but totally out of his depth.

    • @yes_head

I get the sense he's referring to the area rule concept, and he's assuming that it has been incorporated into the design of all supersonic aircraft designs since then. The F-117 was subsonic, so he may be technically correct even if he's wrong about that one plane.
