Feeling really bad for Rita now. I had no clue her life was so terrible. Some of those guys sounded awful, not even counting her evil father.
That being said, I was shocked that her ex husbands appeared in court to DEFEND her from charges of child neglect. Did not expect that at all.

TheJulianStephens I just mean that Orson cheated on her a bunch and, while things seemed to have ended up alright with the Prince, there was probably a bit of a legal struggle over custody, especially when their daughter was technically a royal. It surprised me they’d go the extra mile to protect her. They weren’t the messiest divorces, but still 🤷‍♀️

I thought the same thing but also this was back when women were quite literally thought of as only being caregivers and men being SOLELY the sperm donors when it comes to child care so I mean I wouldn’t think it too crazy to assume that they didn’t want the responsibility 🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @Lauren.E.O

Keren Dela Cruz Also a good point. I was just impressed by Aly in particular, because it seemed like he’d fought for some level of custody of his daughter before (even going so far as to try bribing Rita into raising her in his religion), and this trial could have been the perfect way for him to win back custody if he wanted to. The fact that he defended the mother of his child even though it probably went against his own interests is extremely noble of him.
I actually just looked up a bit about their divorce and it got pretty nasty, so his good will to her later on was doubly impressive.

I've read that victims of domestic violence frequently suffer from undiagnosed CTE (the neurological condition boxers and football players get). If Rita was suffering mood swings and bouts of forgetfulness - she might not have had Alzheimers.

@@marille1694 That's not always the reason, while there are cases where the father doesn't want to have anything to do with their child there are also those that can see that taking away their children from their mother would be damaging both emotionally and psychologically. Most settle for shared custody or give the full custody to the mother with the father recieving visitation rights, this is also when they settle on the amount of child support to be paid for the children's expenses. Child Support doesn't allows equal a parent not caring for their child, it can mean that even though the father isn't there they still want to support and provide for them as best they can. Don't forget there are plenty of cases that are the complete opposite where the mother doesn't want the kids while the father does or they realize that their kids would be better off with the father.

Difference is that Grace Kelly passed away due to a car crash because of crashing to "quite a high" road to bottom due to arguing with her daugther and Diana passed away due to a car crash because of being chased by the paparazzi. Also another difference is that Prince Rainier III didn't divorce with Grace Kelly but Prince Charles did divorce with Diana on 1996.

Lee did not make the film Grey Gardens. She hired the documentary film makers Albert and David Maysles to make a film about her childhood on Long Island, but when she realized that they were focusing the film on her cousins, the Edies, she canceled the project and seized the footage. The Maysles started over and the resulting film was Grey Gardens.

Rita was an incredible actress with such a powerful presence on screen. It's clear to see in films like Gilda and The Lady From Shanghai how she was coming more into her own in that era and asserting herself. It's such a shame that most of the important people in her life seemed to use and/or abuse her.
Grace Kelly was the closest thing to American royalty even before she became a princess. Her wedding gown is one of the best dresses I've seen. But her story reminds us that becoming royalty is actually a very gilded cage. That said, I can't imagine the survivor's guilt that Stephanie must have felt. From everything I've heard her children say, despite her unhappy marriage she really did love her children and influenced them greatly.
And wow, I honestly didn't know that Lee was involved with Onassis before Jackie. That has to make for awkward family holidays. Still, she lived a very full life to say the least.
