Wargames Atlantic: Dark Age Irish Warriors unboxed, kitbashed, and built!

  • While I impatiently wait for the spiders and space dwarfs to make their way to my side of the hemisphere, I couldn't resist the lure of a big box of plastic from Wargames Atlantic any longer. It was either these guys or the Persians, but the Irish come with a bunch of attack dogs so the decision was pretty quick.
    The sprue looks nice upon initial inspection. One thing to note is everyone has a left arm already attached to their body. This is an easy to fix issue for most of you converters, but something to be aware of. Each sprue frame has 6 warriors and 2 dogs, so you end up with a good solid warband of 30 guys and 10 woofers. Each sprue has two cloaks, which I forgot to even put on the initial batch of guys I built (and naturally already started painting).
    There's enough spears for each and every model, but other hand weapons are a bit more limited, and you only end up with a grand total of 5 slings when all is said and done. To balance that out there's a good selection of heads (which absolutely need to be fiddled with on other bodies) and shields of assorted shapes and sizes.
    My only other nitpicky issues are the lack of plenty of scabbards/ sheathed blades for everyone, and the fact that there isn't a single body with shoes on across the entire kit. YES, I am aware they tended to fight barefoot. It would have been nice to have at least one guy with a pair.
    The scabbards I can probably source from another kit or two at least. As always I couldn't leave well enough alone and had to start tinkering with other bits...
    I thought the arm issue would make things feel limited, but having built a good dozen and a half guys now, it hasn't been an issue.
    I feel like these guys would make a nice set of adversaries for skirmish games that need a little more mundane encounters, in addition to more historically accurate games.
    As always I look forward to seeing what WGA are cooking up next!

    I see these kinds of boxes on the shelf or on a site and dismiss them. "I don't need historical Irish warriors", I'd muse. Then I see the sprue and think, "Yes, I need those wolves, and those bodies, and those cloaks!"

      The wolves and cloaks were a clincher for me as well. Since I forgot to glue all the cloaks on I've been experimenting on what other models can wear them. They're pretty versatile bits!
      Plus the warriors themselves turn out pretty nice, if you don't mind an entirely barefoot gang of toughs!

    I've built 4 boxes of these for my Dark Ages armies. The parts mix perfelctly with Gripping Beast minis (heads, arms, weapons) along with other WA kits like Romans and Goths.

    Nice review! They're looking nice, even if I don't have a use for them. For now at least!
    Looking forward to your review of the Wargames Atlantic spiders.

    Actually a rly cool kit! Been iching to make a beastmen army for 9th age using historicals as base troops and these are good candidates

    Lack of archers is historically correct! For some reason the Irish of this period did not use them. The lack of shoes is not. They had a style of sandal and leather slipper in this period. Some might fight bare foot but many would have had something.

    you mentioned 3d printed bases. My question is with all of the heads and arms that I now have from buying Northstar and Fireforge Games kits, are there any kits with just bodies, or 3d files with just bodies? Because that would be a great way to utilize all these extra bits I now have

    Thanks for all this great content! I've been binging these videos and I think I'm about to take the plunge with these and a bunch of the Frostgrave models.
    Is anyone doing modular ninja/samurai like these?

      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  3 роки тому +1

      Dude, I wish. I'm sure it'll happen eventually. There were some modular ninjas in plastic for Shadows of Brimstone. They aren't as sharp in regards to details as these, and there aren't as many, but they do have a few options included- and Shadows of Brimstone is a fun board game as well!

      Not at this quality level, to my knowledge. Warlord Games has plastic Sengoku-era samurai and ashigaru, but they aren't great.

    How do you think these stack up against gripping beast

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  24 дні тому

      Much more defined and a bit truer scale. Not to knock on Gripping Beast, but they're sculpts tend to be a bit more squat and heroic. I'm somewhat curious how they'd work together. I'd say if they're painted and based similarly it wouldn't be too bad.

    most thick weapons on minis look BLOODY STUPID lol .. I use paper clips for polearms (and slings!) and cut swords from the tough plastic of yogurt lids :) they wont break, ever! and they look like real weapons do not fucking stupid logs for spears or swords that look sharp as any club lol
    Ps .. putting sandals on bare feet isnt any trick just use a thick paint and imagine a combat boot with the toes cut out, looks quite roman
