Love the new tires and the Borla exhaust amazing job! This and the last video makes me wanna work on my dad’s Ford 1986 Bronco so bad lol.
Just a heads up on the tires. I saw the date code @2:32. They date back to the 24th week of 2007.
Aic valve. Is your surgery problem
Black Magic bought Wesley's Bleach White n now it's crap. Used Wesley's on all my parents whitewall tires back in the day. Now it's back to Comet powder cleaner which was my 2nd favorite.
After spending thousands in the early 00's on fox body Mustangs and their piss poor ECU's and EFI system the best mod i did was to go with a carburetor. Now that we have Retro-EFI systems I wouldn't consider spending $1 on the OG fox body EFI stuff (even aftermarket). Been building hot rods and muscle cars for 25+ years....and I only recommend two systems; Fi-Tech and the Summit Racing MAX-500, (Old holley sniper is plagued with issues, no experience with Sniper II). I'd go with an Edelbrock "air gap" intake (Performer rpm if no hood clearance) and the Fi-Tech system. You'd also need a return-style fuel system good for 40+psi (Fi-tech makes a drop-in in-tank pump module) and a different distributor (Summit Racing branded ignition stuff is good/ affordable, stay away from MSD!). For heads you can't go wrong with AFR, Edelbrock, Trick-Flow, etc.... Just make sure when you do heads to upgrade the valve train (roller rockers, correct length hardened push rods, quality rocker studs, ARP head bolts).
Glad you took the Flowmasters off. I wanted them when I was younger due to the sound and got mac and liked them a lot better plus they perform way better. The surge is the IAC. Don't dump that kind of money into that 302 you can build a 351 stroker cheaper and have a more powerful and more durable motor. Seriously don't play with that Hypereutectic piston 302. Also I'm not 100% sure on this because I'm not a 302 guy but I'm pretty sure the trick flow intake is the best one. 5k is also pretty steep for an intake and heads like really steep. You can get 4.6 2v parts cheaper than that and the pushrod stuff is way cheaper.
Idle air control valve is searching for a good mixture. Maybe be vacuum leak or wore aic
Air idle control valve is the surging issue. Very common on those motors.
Thumbs up so you can get your own place with a lift and a big garage.
Tire and wheel choice is spot on. Now for the bad news...you're too much of a perfectionist to not restore that car. When it comes time to put "rings" in that engine, just get a crate engine with a carburetor, it will fix the surging issue in the process. It's the way that car needs to be. It will be cheaper in the long run.
That wesleys used to be awesome to bring the kawasaki green seats back to life. Great video!
Not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but check the pinion angle. Can cause vibrations/damage if it is wrong.
Yes if it's too strait it will cause alot more shake than you would think, plus it's good for them needle bearings to move a full rotation! Makes ur universals last longer!
Much better wheels! And I was a big fan of the corvette and was really looking forward to that resto but I must say… I am sooo glad you traded it up for the mustang. Your judgment is on point, and I must add you are looking fit my man!!! 💪👊
😂 Like most jobs, they can either take 2 hours or 4 days….🤣🤣
Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 👍
Terrible spacers, need hub centric. Those ones drop on the lugs uneven when you put them on and while driving will be unbalanced
Im just here for next top quad series . Everyone on youtube are doing car stuff
Dirty IAC? My dad's ranger did something similar until I cleaned it out. I know that isn't the same engine, but I have also had a few 5.0's and I feel like that could help. Might look into it.
Bro you trusting those stands was something else
They have locks in them so they can't drop on you
Yeah man, my dad used to have a bottle of that white wall cleaner by the same brand hanging around the garage for years. If I remember correctly, and I know that I do, it worked fantastic. It would bring the white wall letters back so great.
Frame off restoration? It's a unibody platform with a K member up front, bro. Contact Detriot Speed if you want to do it right and get rid of all of that 1960's upper & lower control arm stuff with those dinosaur ball joints. If you want to get rid of the wheel hop, put a set of ladder bars on the rear end. That'll take care of the axle wrap.
Wheels and tires look great good choice. Your surge problem is coming from a vacuum leak or IAC valve is wore out that car needs a carburetor on it and that will fix the surging problem. Great video it's a nice change of pace watching you wrench on the old thing I know you and this thing will be pretty much a off the frame restoration by time you are finished with it. Wonder what you will pick up next to bring back to life.
If I’m not mistaken I believe that the surging the related to the TPS needed to be recalibrated. The UA-cam channel BREW2L had a video explaining how to fix this problem. Best of luck with the Mustang.
Just my advice to control wheel hop on launch is either looking into “cal trac” traction bars or old school traction bars, they’ll help control forward leaf springs compression which causes the wheels to hop and be pushed back over and over again as shown when you launched it, obviously new rear shocks would be helpful as well, those two options are the most affordable and bang for buck! Love your vids!
Welcome to the classic full frame off restoration hack job group my friend! My classic truck is the same way when I bought it when I was young and dumb. Every time I worked on it 10 more things would pop up to the point I lost interest and it's been sitting for a few years. Recently I decided to get back into it and have some fun again. Watching your videos reminds me of the blood sweat and bulged disks I've dumped into ours. Just remember, don't have to get it right just get it running and fix as it goes. Keep up the great content!
Good call on the tire and rim combo. As much as I love the Cragers, I like what you did better.
the idle is probably off because the O2 heating elements arent working properly. or you have a vacuum leak in the intake system somewhere . .when you grind metal by cars , please cover the paint and glass , those sparks get embedded in the paint and glass being they are molten temp , and then rust over time and etch the glass. and with wheel spacers, always go hubcentric , they are usually sold as vehicle/brand specific . but you see how when you put your apcer on the holes were oblong and it wasn't sitting centralized . def important.
Mike, pull the shaft and inspect the slipjoint. It may be worn. If the tailshaft housing is removeable, the bushing can be replaced easily enough. Looked like the rear seal was seeping, so replace it. Spicer Ujoints only!! No cheap ones!! Make certain they have zerks on em so you can do proper maintenance. Get a damn extension and go for it!! The tailshaft typically does float some. The bushing and slipjoint support it. polish the slipjount with 150 or 220 grit paper and lube the seal groove with a light grease. The slipjoint is fine, POLISH it!!
Marginal or dirty MAF sensor... I am assuming someone bastardized an EFI system in there! If so, it really needs proper calibration and also look at the ECT. Engine Coolant Sensor. If it is faulty, it can affect performance across the board.
A big cam takes away from low end torque, making streetable driving less than pleasant. A mild cam is fine since they are typically designed around a good balance of torque and horsiepower. A ProFlo system is a very nice system buuuuuut, you have to really know how to tune them and let them learn from there. Stay away from FiTech since they are a pain in the ass for setup. MSI also makes a nice system. I prefer the port injection systems over TBI systems.
Always been a Chevy person myself however these older mustangs do have an awesome look to them! Going to be a sick build and can’t wait to see it done you never disappoint
Dude your idle surge could be a ton of things IAC? O2 sensors? MAF? get a code reader and look at codes fuel trims etc! Oh not to mention vacuum leaks or EGR!
Sweet! And wow mike wearing a cap facing forward! This has to be the first video that happened! I feel naked without mine haha. You could put some sound det inside for the drone noise. And I had a msd spark box on mine. Helped a lot! A good distributor, cap button and plug wires too. And spark plugs while your at it.
Buy an old car they said… it’ll be fun they said 😂😂😂, I have a 70 chevelle and 68 el Camino, the fun never stops, Alan Whittaker said it best on drag week, you gotta love working on your car to love this sport 😂 btw when it comes time for cylinder heads AFR is the way to go if you can drop the cash for them
I had a 92’ F-150 5.0L and it had the exact same idol when cold, my dads 91’F-150 5.0L has that same idol thing. I’ve heard it in a number of fords, maybe it’s just me but it might just be a 90’s EFI ford thing 🤷
Went to put new pads in my truck. Figured I better fix the oil leak. 2 months later and I'm still fixing the high pressure oil system and resealing everything. Just can't find the time to do it
You can still get bleche white, it's made by black magic and it works just as good in my opinion. I also use bleche white on white plastics. It works amazing to get stains and stubborn grime on white plastics.
It's called "while you're in there syndrome" 🤣They make a special tool for exhaust work it's called a Sawzall 🤣
Fuel tech 450 or a 550 fuel management will make it easy to tune!.. and if your thinking turbo or supercharge in the future!
Looks like a new driveshaft. I would be weary that it could be a China driveshaft. I’ve heard really poor things about China driveshafts. I’m only halfway through the video but you should look into getting the driveshaft balanced professionally
@michaelSabo that westly’s bleche white is the best thing they make if you want tires to look brand new. I’ve been using it for almost 20 years. Black magic owns the company now but it’s still the same product that you can get at Walmart. It works great on fourwheeler plastics to if you want to take mud grim from off them. Just wet the plastics, spray the bleche white on them and let it sit 20-30 seconds and wash it off. Works wonders and is great stuff
Stick to dirtbikes/atv’s man. These old cars are endless moneypits if you’re planning to do this properly. 😅
Dude Mike I’m not even a mustang fan but I can most definitely appreciate some classic muscle. I’m loving this series Mike. Keep up the amazing videos bro. Seriously you are easily one of the best builders in UA-cam in my opinion.

I've owned two foxbody mustangs with 5.0's. If I were you I would take the stock EFI off and go straight carb. I think that would be your best bet. the old ECU's were junk in the mustangs back in the day.
Mike! Honestly at at beginning I was upset to loose the crager wheels but once you installed the new wheels I completely understand why you got them ! It looks way better than before, so much more original yet tough. Also you kinda are a perfectionist , i mean that as compliment. I am too myself that’s why I can relate to your ways . It always pisses me off when people say things are right or in great condition then when you look into it you find bullshit like you found with drive shaft /seal and trans mount ! Also have you cleaned or inspected the idle air control valve on the 5.0 ? Sounds like a possibility for your issue.
That trans mount needs fixed asap. Motor mounts are probably fine but can’t hurt to check them. It runs rough when cold because the old fords did that. Iac could be a problem or just because it’s swapped and something isn’t right. A carb would fix it. Or a new efi set up.
The Pro XS I have got louder over time. I wouldn't call it loud but it has more sound broken in. Those band clamps you had, I had my pipes want to migrate out of them. I solved it by both using red rtv to seal and drilling 2 small holes through them and installing 2 stainless pop rivets through the clamps to keep the pipes from separating.
The wheels are perfect. I'm really glad you didn't put big wheels on it. Old iron should never have big wheels. Not a big fan of the car stuff, but happy to see you with a muscle car.
No other engine sounds like the fuelie 5.0L HO + Flowmasters = sounds of the late 80's early 90's.
Love the magnums. I hate anything bigger than 15 inch wheels on these cars. That wheelhop that you experienced in the previous video is murder on drive train parts. That is likely what broke the trans mount at some point. Traction bars and rear suspension work will cure it.
Leaking tranny could be solved using jack stands at the rear end only. Wrong parts from the store. Bring in a sample of what your replacing. A car this old has after era parts on it as you have said. 👍✌️
I love the look of this thing! Makes me want to get a classic muscle car. Excited to see the progress. Sounds awesome!
Take the mufflers with you to an exhaust shop and have them and new piping put on it’s actually fairly cheap!
Hey you should do a collaboration with knicade pavich would we awesome
Bleach white is great and even better if you let it sit for a couple minutes before scrubbing.
I have a 01 ram 2500 I had a busted trans mount that I drove on for years in bad shape just changed it and it made a pretty significant difference when shifting on a regular cruise you don't really notice it but when it's time to get on it that mount is crucial 💯
my names westley but i’m older than 1996 😂 great video mike
Love this content love the car black with the perfect amount of chrome and the wheels were the perfect touch on the car and the borlas sound perfect and idle air control valve is your idle problem it's typical on those year motors or you have a vacume leak sweet ride brother!
The wheel hopping on hard launching, is what knocked the trans mount out, fix the wheel hopping issue.
Usually on startup you have a high idle from the choke on a carb, could be not working. Most are automatic chokes on the carbs and they stick.
De carbon the throttle body remove the IAC and clean those ports also. ECT are known for going bad.
I wanted to change my rear sprocket on my RM 250 I had to grind down the last nut I ended up gouging into the hub, sent the hubs out to get powder coated and I ended up doing the entire bike frame off restoration. I started in May of this year still not done
cars with cams will be more difficult to drive at lower speeds due to the surging from the cam. Also, I would definitely get it tuned.
Get a new Idle air control valve. Very common to go bad on 90s and 2000s ford engines. Ive replaced 4.
Properly mounted, quality trac bars should help with the vibration when spinning the tires too.
Turn up your cold idle screw. It won't want to keep surging / dieing on you.
The vette is still there 17:14 nice upgrade man.. coyote swap in the future?
Once out I will switch to new the whole thing, instead of switching parts slowly
Your videos are a source of inspiration! How wonderful to see such a passionate approach to creating content.✋ ) 🖤.
I love this it feels like the shows I use to watch as a kid about rebuilding classic cars
Bro! You didn’t go with Flowmasters? Everyone knows to run Flows with the 5 oh
The number of times I have laid on the floor under my car like that... 😂😂😂
It's more fun to work on bikes, isn't it?^^
Need to order a black widow exhaust kit make your life a lot easier. Made your own.
I am soooo freaking happy you ended up with a 67. My favorite car period.
Brillo pads for the lettering worked for me back in the day
A full length Michael Sabo engine rebuild of this engine would be the best thing ever
Not a mustang guy, even a Ford for that matter but that shit is pretty gangster
Those wheels and tires look AWESOME man
If you need to get iron ore stains off from something that Wesley's works well.
😢should have bought a Mopar or Chevy ! Less headaches!
Your smoking issue is most likely valve Guide seals tires and wheels are spot on 👍
Hey bro I dm u on i.g. I think I know why she runs like that on startup.
does Dad like the Mustang over the Vette build?
You may be able to clean that idle air control valve to get rid of the surging idle.
The car is cold. That’s why is does that.
This is wild ur doing aa badass old mustang. Sweat ass bikes quads and now cars
Wouldn't that worn out trans mount just cause the seal to fail again?
Surge could be your IAC. Or tps maybe.
I love the sound of that car and that’s before ain’t heard it changed yet
Bro why did you put those grandpa wheels on there.
I used bleach white when I had white walls it works great
Ps that busted mount is a very big deal in your vibration.
Ya bro you brave messin wit that exhaust
Just use SOS pads for the white letters
To be honest most exhaust shops weld like that
Sounds like the choke needs some attention
The Magnum 500 are way nicer man!!!
32:57 Love the t shirt man🔥, looks awesome
I like the exhaust tone!
This one time, in Band Clamp...
