Keep in mind American Football came from Rugby. In the early days it looked way more like rugby. The backward pass y'all speak of is called a lateral which is the 1 thing that shows American football came from Rugby. You rarely see the lateral anymore except in a last ditch effort with no time left on the clock. I do wish it was utilized more. See New Orleans Saints vs Jaguars roundabout 2004. There's a few other of those plays that make for classic highlight reels.
