Gencer was one of the greatest Aidas ever, it is your loss that you can't appreciate that, maybe it's your speakers, or maybe it's your ears, but she was a truly fabulous Aida. And she did have a big career outside of Italy
At 26 january 1957 sang Leyla Gencer the the role of the second priores in the word-premiere of the "Dialoques des Carmelites" by Francis Poulenc. On CD you remains some parts of this. Listen to it and you will get tears in your eyes. Leyla was a great artist. Hans from NL.
She never made a commercial recording she was never offered one don't know why perhaps she was a victim of her time golden age of opera there was a plethora of outstanding and great singers even the ones considered 3rd rate were better than most singers currently in opera
this is the best rendition of this song!!!! She just upped Callas hands down!!! I love Gencer b/c she has a voice of her own. Which only the greatest of Divas have conquered. Her pianissimo are similar to that of Caballe.!!
There was no magazine behind this woman, but she had a very strong and beautiful voice. Leyla ( Laila) means night and beautiful woman with black hair...
Leyla Gencer has a beautiful voice. I can see why she's revered. My only quibble is that since not everyone knows Italian, it's too bad that English or (perhaps more appropriately) Turkish subtitles could not have been added to this recording.
Leyla had the same problem as other beautiful sopranos at that time. The media-hipe between Callas and Tabaldi made everyone blind for the othes sopranos. Think for instance at Virzinea Zeani or (my favourite)Magda Olivero.

And Price also sang beautifully into her 70s. She made different choices to preserve her instrument. Gencer and Callas burned white hot, but not for very long. Doesn't mean Price was any less a singer.
@FoggyRoad81 50s and 60s were the most productive years of Gencer. There are many recordings of her even from mid-80s here on UA-cam. Just search! Even I have uploaded one of her arias from Roberto Devereoux, 1974.
I love Gencer in this repertory... I hate all the glottals in the belcanto and dramatic coloratura, and plus her coloratura is not so accurate.. But this is sublime.!
Je ne sais moreno2314 si vous comprenez le francais mais je tiens à vous dire que vous avez le droit de ne pas aimer Gencer mais sa réputation n'est plus à faire. @yodavidnavarro Perhaps.. Listen to callas live 1953 performance of Aida at Covent Garden. this aria is beautiful.. Price however to me defined the role.
Ahahah! I can see that. Although L.Price's voice is a bit too husky for me to listen to after so long. I do have Price's "Prima Donna" album and let me assure you it is the best of everything from her! She even sings stratospheric Ds, Eflats, and E naturals from famous arias! Making them her own in that powerful voice of hers!
I don't doubt you speak the truth about Schwartzkopf. I would, however, like to know the source of your statement. Caballe, while direct rivals with Gencer in the 60's and 70's in their Donizetti heroines, at least shared bel canto in common. It is fascinating to contemplate WHY Schwartkopf would have anything to do with Gencer since their repertory was almost entirely different, with the exception of a few Mozartian roles. As you well know, Schwarzkopf by the mid 60's became a leider singer.
I listened to Gwyneth Jones as well, very good singing, but her singing Aida ( she is a slave..) does not give me the emotions Gencer conveying with her voice.
I am being fair, I just said I love her in this..Aida... I hate her in the dramatic coloratura repertoire. She is a very good singer, in her fach, just as they all are. Each of them have a fach, no matter how much they try to fool themselves.
You are so disrespectful of great artists it's shameful you write like this in Spanish on You Tube, shame on you, clean the wax out of your ear, she was a fabulous soprano, a great Aida for the ages, this aria is sung beautifully, in every way!

Wonderful voice and musician. But the high C is sung forte; Verdi wrote pianissimo (or more precisely: "un fil di voce" > a wire of voice). For that exercice, Caballé remains the queen.
@@beachfanatic2010 I don't contest; at this time, her voice was huge and she could sing very, very powerfully. But, in other occasions, she demonstrate her ability to sing pianissimo up to the top Eb (La Sonnambula).

Leyla Gencer That is why their approach is so similar,Calas and Gencer have many things in common artistically
I find that Price's voice is very beautiful in a classic traditional way: even someone not steeped in opera could recognize immediately that Price's voice is self-evidently gorgeous. Moreover her first recording of Aida (with Vickers, Gorr, Solti) is arguably the finest studio Aida on the market. At the same time, Gencer, with a more individual and less luxuriant sound, has a vocal range and a variety of vocal color down to a richer low, whose breadth, from the low to a fine subito piano in the top, matches the great Aidas of the first half of the 20th century somewhat more closely. It's a case of quality versus quantity. The quality of Price's instrument is simply staggering. The entire upper half of her instrument has a unique glow all its own. I'll always be grateful I saw her sensational Forza Leonora in 1972 (her peak), a part that lies high throughout and was ideal for her. Aida's role needs great presence in the low as much as the top, and this is why Gencer is a closer match, if not as traditionally beautiful.
