its a really good camera not good in low light (if you don't long expouse) because of noise but i really like it and its on a professsional level trust me ! buy it if you are on a budget just get a prime lens with F1.4 or 2 and you are in the game
No, we didn't have video production classes at school. We hardly had any computers either. Consider yourself lucky. What we did have though were English language classes which are still amazingly useful.
Thank you for your review. It is still relevant in 2018! I stumbled upon a 550D/T2i this week. No sense in buying the latest & greatest retail model offered, just upgrade as availability and budget allows. They all do much more than I am capable of utilizing anyway.
You are seriously the best camera reviewer on the net. You're very fair, you cover everything important and above all your reviews are easy to understand someone relatively new to photography like myself. Thank-you!
If you're into wildlife photography, having the right lenses will be more important than a full-frame body. The smaller APS-C sensor is actually beneficial for shots of distant subjects.
Shot this with my t2i, definitely a good starter camera. Check out the photo let me know what you guys think! www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=7723302
skbenergy Thanks! Just got into it about 6 months ago snapping pics, always loved aviation though hah. I see on your avatar you have a pic of BA looks like 777! Check out more pics on the page by clicking "more" from my name, I also have a pg on airliners.net and planespotters.net as well. let me know if you have a page i'll check out etc!
MOHAMMED ZAHEER wow cool :), this is my aviation channel, i use a canon T3I bu i just got a 55 to 250 zoom lens i have always been using the smaller lens, i love doing videos in my free time. I live on a small island in the Caribbean name St Kitts and i love to show of what we have to offer :) feel free to check it out when u get some time
@VideoDocR It's an interesting observation, but I'm certainly not hiding anything myself! I haven't noticed one brand being particularly more prone to failure or returns than another. You'll hear more complaints about the bigger brands in any category though as they simple sell more units. Most reviewers look at a product at the start of its life, so the best people to comment are the stores which handle the returns.
@hbuglilly If its clicking, that could be the lens aperture adjusting as the brightness changes. Try shooting with manual exposures and fix the aperture - see the manual. The stabilisaiton motor can also sometimes be heard,. so you may want to switch off IS.
Excellent review!! ...i have just recently bought my T2i but i'm having a little problem with while recording video.... it's just that it says " movie recording has been stopped automatically" once i have recorded a few ten seconds of the video... this did not happen earlier.... i've been trying to see if it's any settings error but ...no luck...... I hope you have the answer to this one ....thanks!!
In Live Vire the mirror stays up and the sensor and screen remain active. This all consumes power and heats up the sensor, so most live view modes switch off after a set time.
@davidcapi Thanks for trying to support us! You may also want to try B&H through cameralabs . com when they are back in stock. An imported model will only be guarenteed for the country it's from (so if it breaks in the warranty period, it'll need to go back to the USA), and it'll come with a US mains plug, but you can swap the cable for a local one if preferred, or use an adapter plug. The charger will work anywhere.
@mickysim123 It's not that they break at that point, it's just a guarenteed number before the timing of the shutter may not be as acurate - you're looking at about 100k shots for consumer mode, 150k for semi-pro and 300k for pro bodies.
@Sa6ee The remote control program is called EOS Utility and comes with al recent Canon DSLRs including your 500D - it should be on the main software CD which came with it.
@criticaltinker Thanks, much appreciated! PS - nice lens too... make sure you tell us why you went for that one in the 'which 50mm did you buy' thread in the Canon section of the cameralabs forum...
@HappyDude224 The 50mm f1.8 becomes a short telephoto lens on the 600D / 550D, so while it's great for portraits, it's too long for general-purpose shots. As such I wouldn't recommend it as your only lens. So if those are your only two choices, get the 550D with the 18-55, then buy the 50mm later if you get into portraits or low light work.
To shot with the screen you need to put it in Live View - see your manual. But using the 'hole' is the way this kind of camera was meant to be used for most of the time and you'll find the focusing is very slow when using the screen.
@BurgarProduction Do you mean in the live view segment? It was on a tripod, but the 10x magnified view is very powerful, so even blowing on the lens will show a wobble!
@awsomepossum1340 Sadly not, the viewfinder on a DSLR requires the mirror to be down - and when filming video, the mirror is up. If you want to film video with a viewfinder, you'll need a mirrorless ILC like a Sony NEX or Micro Four Thirds.
Tough decision... I'd go for the D3200 if you're a beginner who'd appreciate the guide mode. I'd go for the other two if the flip out screens would be useful to you. I have no personal preference!
I wish this guy would hold a class on how to review, well, anything. So many reviews today are simply some guy trying to cram in as many catchy adjectives as possible, which results in me watching a 10 minute video with about 30 seconds of useful information. This reviewer actually spent the majority of the time reviewing the camera. Much thanks!
Just last Saturday, I purchased the Canon EOS Rebel T2i, my first DSLR camera and must say that I was very impressed with the features after trying it out. The photos were very detailed and clear, which was what I was looking for a camera that takes crisp clear photos. I enjoy watching this review and I am glad that I purchased this camera for it is above my expectations. Thanks for sharing.
@FIGHTTHECABLE Did you look at the results pages on my review? I compared it against the D90 which has the same image quality as the D5000, and I think you'd agree the 550D is far from terrible. Also, while the D5000 only has 720p video at 24fps, the 550D has 720 and 1080p at a choice of frame rates. But as I said at the end of this video, that's not to say it's for everyone.
You may think it's redundant, and I certainly don't like repeating it all the time, but judging from all the questions asking if they're the same thing, it's necessary!
@Rocknthebounce Blimey, he's a postive kind of guy! Yes the 5D and 7D are tougher cameras - they're semi-pro models - but the 550D / T2i will be fine for many years so long as you don't drop it or give it a hard bash.
Hi, there is a very useful video, one question what does the EXP SIM in the bottom right screen stand for. I have it showing a lot on my 550d. Is my SIM card getting full up, or is it something else? Many thanks .Mike.
Learned more about Canon's 2Ti from this 20min review than I would have after hours of trying to process the manual through an ADD gray-matter haze. Very helpful, clear and concise information along with a pleasant and highly informed presentation. Invaluable, thanks for taking the time to put in the hard work, you should be on the tele. Brilliant!
Gordon, you are the God of camera reviews. After watching your videos I'm actually hoping for more cameras to come out, simply so you can make reviews of them. Truly, you have made purchasing my first DSLR an easy task. Thank you.
@SeanThomasTV I can assure you that all of the video you see here was filmed by me. I provide originals at cameralabs . com, but if people are uploading them here and claiming them as their own, then they are violating my copyright. Please provide usernames.
bro can you please tell me can i buy d550 or 650.........what is the pros and corn,,,,,,i am not rich .......also so please give me a advice......i collect these money for several monthsto buy a good camera
@criticaltinker Glad to be of service! I hope you clicked the Amazon link at cameralabs . com before ordering - the price is the same, but they pay a little commission, and that's the only thing which pays for my work and these reviews! Please see the partner stores page at cameralabs . com!
@ibo852 You can mount a DSLR on many telescopes, but they tend to be bigger models with removeable eyepieces and 2in focusing tubes. Ask at your local telescope shop...
@castingsinkers Doesn't anyone read the manual anymore?! It's been a while since I tested it, but I think it was High ISO expansion in custom settings.
I see 40Ds on sale on ebay for about 250-350 bucks. The problem is there's since been a 50D, 60D and now a 70D is coming soon. The 40D is an old camera in digital terms and you may not get much for it anymore.
Hi Gordon, After all the reserch, I finally got my T2i 18-135mm from New egg, This is my first DSLR Camera, and thanks to you, I learn a lot from your show ! agian thank you !!
@TechCuber That's good to know... Some SanDisk Extreme 3's are Class 6 - definitely worth checking. Maybe yours was a 'failed' class 6, which performs better than average Class 4s...
@AETrainingDavid97 $780 is the cheapest price you'll find for the 550D / T2i, but always check the stores as you may not like their reputation. You may prefer to shop at the more famous ones, in which case the price will be closer to 899. Either way though, please do go through my site - thanks!
@xXxNoXGirlyXGirlxXx Do you mean my video clips? Everything you see here was filmed with the 18-135mm kit lens. But note cheaper kits may come with the shorter 18-55mm.
Excellent review - have just gone and bought one of these. My first DSLR since the Canon 300D... way back. Not been into photography over the last few years and just getting back into it so hoping this model is going to meet my expectations and get me back into aviation photography. Thanks again for a very informative review, certainly helped with my decison making.
@TylerVanderkooy Use the lowest ISO and really close down the aperture, maybe like f22. A 30 minute exposure is very long and will let in a LOT of light, You may need to try some shorter exposures first, like 5 minutes, or even 1 minute until you get a feel of the correct exposure.
I'm up in the air over the 550d and the 60d. Not going to make a decision until you post a review of the 60d.. Your reviews are the best on the net. Thanx Gordon!
That was a serious review! I went to the full review at cameralabs & was amazed. I bought a T2i back in Oct and was just looking at reviews to see what people where saying. Its my 1st DSLR and I enjoy it. Your review is awesome! I learned about the pros & cons. I have been taking DSLR youtube tutorials for about 2 weeks and now have a better understanding of what makes a good camera good compared to my entry T2i. I love the review and I think the T2i is a great beginner DSLR.
@Mastamarek I never went away! Remember I do many more reviews at cameralabs . com - only a handful are shown here. I won't be doing any pro bodies though.
Hi Gordon, I watched this review yesterday, a full day after you posted it, and it was still at the lowest res..... it's amazing how long it takes UA-cam to convert it to 1080p. I'm now loading it again, and will watch it at 1080p. I was dead set on the 7D, but you have convinced me the 550D is the way to go - From the rave reviews of this camera, I'm going to say it's getting the same hoopla that the Canon G2 did back in 2001 , and what an amazing camera it was. Thanks Gordon
@ptlofts Here are the "extra" features that the 7D offers: 1.) Magnesium body. The 550D is sturdy, but it's not made of magnesium, like the 7D. However, that also makes the 550D a lighter camera. 2.) Higher burst rate. Due to the 7D's sensor (exact same size as the 550D - crop factor = 1.6), you can shoot 8 frames per second on the 7D (only 3.7 fps on the 550D). 3.) The 7D has a 100% viewfinder, so what you see is what will appear on the image. The 550D's viewfinder only shows about 98%.
This has easily been the most informative review of any product I've seen on UA-cam and a clear example of how this stuff should be done. Keep it up! Would you still recommend this camera for video now at the price point? Thanks again!
I just want to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I visited your web page by accident through Google and bang. I have spent days looking for a good all purpose lens for the Canon 550D, and what took me days just took less than hour to have a clear idea. Not only that you also highlight other lenses that can suit different purpose, so Thank You!
@ayudan24688 You can do the computer-based remote control with ANY of the current Canon DSLRs - the software is called EOS Utility and comes with the camera.
@BobbyDigital1980 DSLRs have the potentiual for lower noise in low light thanks to their much bigger sensors, BUT most won't autofocus while filming and you'll only see a real benefit in noise if the DSLR lens has a similar f-number to your camcorder. If you use the DSLR kit lens, it will have a bigger f-number than a camcorder and therefore gather much less light, so much of the big sensor benefit is lost compensating for the dim lens.
I bought myself 550D last year as a birthday present and it never disappointed me. I know it's not the best camera out there but I think it's a brilliant camera to learn and love photography. I learned from my 550D that talent is not in the camera but the photographer himself. So don't distress yourself about deciding which camera to buy. Just buy the camera which you think is the best for you. It can be canon, nikon, etc. But thumbs up if you are a canon fan. =]
I'm a moderate beginner in photography as well and I bought the 550D last friday. I can report that for photography, this camera is as great as for the videomaking. I was recommended by several people (salesmen and canon-using friends) that the 550D was better for beginners with some experience, because it would give you more possibilities than the D3100. I didn't have the opportunity to compare it with the very similar D3100, so if you do, grab it! But as far as the Canon concernes, it great!
@dragongundam88 Well the 1.2 will gather more light than the 1.4, but only a little and it costs a LOT more. I think of the three Canon 50mm lenses, the 1.4 strikes the best balance of price and performance. PS - just remember to buy it through one of the partner stores at cameralabs . com to support me - thanks!
@griffinn2 The lens used throughout this video was the EF-S 18-135mm IS - this is the kit lens in some parts of the world. I have a full review of it at cameralabs . com.
Hi everyone, be sure to check back when YT has finished processing the video - it was uploaded in 1080p, so it should look quite good - I hope! And of course, make sure you visit my full review at cameralabs . com - there's a link right below the video window...
Great review! my teacher recommended this camera as a good starter on digital (I'm used to film but I've been planning to switch to digital because it takes too much time and energy to develop film these days) Your video has officially persuaded me to upgrade my system! Thanks so much!
how come you're not a partner, your reviews are the most proffesional work I've seen in youtube universe, filled with unboxing videos from 12 year old. Thanks for the great job.
@cameralabs Thanks for the help man! I've decided on getting this camera thanks to all your video reviews and your full reviews. You speak very clearly and show off all the features in an easy to understand way. As easy as it can be explained for such an advanced camera anyway. Keep it up!
Wow, what can i say. Awesome video. I'm a noob and looking to get into this photography lark and have pretty much decided on a 550d. Your tone and voice is super clear and demeanour for presenting is excellent. Just away to check out your cameralab site now. Thanks again.
its a really good camera not good in low light (if you don't long expouse) because of noise but i really like it and its on a professsional level trust me ! buy it if you are on a budget just get a prime lens with F1.4 or 2 and you are in the game
You're welcome, thanks for finding it! Ah, the good old days when one of my camera reviews could gather over a million views!
You are seriously the best camera reviewer on the net. You're very fair, you cover everything important and above all your reviews are easy to understand someone relatively new to photography like myself. Thank-you!
Very informative review, thanks Gordon.

If you're into wildlife photography, having the right lenses will be more important than a full-frame body. The smaller APS-C sensor is actually beneficial for shots of distant subjects.
Shot this with my t2i, definitely a good starter camera. Check out the photo let me know what you guys think!

@RetroRepair Thankyou! Yes, I'd still recommend it, but if you want a flip-out screen, do also consider the 600D / T3i.
@VideoDocR It's an interesting observation, but I'm certainly not hiding anything myself! I haven't noticed one brand being particularly more prone to failure or returns than another. You'll hear more complaints about the bigger brands in any category though as they simple sell more units.
Wow!! It has been that long my friend. Maybe UA-cam thought I need some touch of nostalgia.
Fascinating how technology has progressed.
@TechCuber it's not in the manual mode, you need to enable ISO expansion in the custom menus - please read the ISOs ection in your manual.
No, sadly you can't record in 1080p at 60fps on any Canon DSLR yet.

@BurgarProduction Do you mean in the live view segment? It was on a tripod, but the 10x magnified view is very powerful, so even blowing on the lens will show a wobble!
@dadiyoki if you're a beginner, get the 1100D or the Nikon D100, or the Panasonic G3
@awsomepossum1340 Sadly not, the viewfinder on a DSLR requires the mirror to be down - and when filming video, the mirror is up. If you want to film video with a viewfinder, you'll need a mirrorless ILC like a Sony NEX or Micro Four Thirds.

@SurftheCity If the camera will be used on or near the board, you might want to seek out a waterproof model instead.
@TechCuber If you don't have the H option you saw in the video, you may need to enable ISO expansion in the Custom menus. It's all in your manual.
@richardarichter123 Sadly not, there's no continuous AF while you're filming. I'd recommend a Sony SLT...

@MrJippaLippa It's an upper entry-level model, but feel free to tell Canon that they're wrong and you're right.
If size and weight is an issue, how about a Sony NEX 5N? It's a great camera and will match the quality of this DSLR.
@Rocknthebounce Blimey, he's a postive kind of guy! Yes the 5D and 7D are tougher cameras - they're semi-pro models - but the 550D / T2i will be fine for many years so long as you don't drop it or give it a hard bash.
EXCELLENT review as always. Have had this camera for over a year now. It's been fantastic!..
Thanks for your review!!!
Hi, there is a very useful video, one question what does the EXP SIM in the bottom right screen stand for. I have it showing a lot on my 550d. Is my SIM card getting full up, or is it something else? Many thanks .Mike.
Don't worry, it's short for exposure simulation. The manual for your camera will explain more.
@youtoolgofckurself I don't get it - what difference does it make if I'm sitting down or standing up?
@xXxmidgexXx Yes, it refers to the speed. The card (or at least the packaging) should be labelled with the class number.
Learned more about Canon's 2Ti from this 20min review than I would have after hours of trying to process the manual through an ADD gray-matter haze.
@LELO202 It's called EOS Utility and comes with the camera.

No, I have just enabled 'ISO expansion' in the menus. Check your manual.
@Jackspadeproductions This is a great choice, but don't forget the 600D / t3i, which is almost the same but with an articulated screen.
@meatwad4900 I hurt it! Unfortunately I shot the footage for several reviews around the same time, so you'll also see it in some upcoming videos!
my 550d max exposure is 6400, i can't find the 12800 expansion. help me please?
Go to custom menu, you can find ISO expansion. Turn that on.
my 550D max ISO's 6400, i can't find the 12800 expansion. i need some guide please...
@NoShadowOfDoubt - it needs about 5.5Mbyte per second. Canon quotes Class 6 or higher as being necessary.
@xXxNoXGirlyXGirlxXx Do you mean my video clips? Everything you see here was filmed with the 18-135mm kit lens. But note cheaper kits may come with the shorter 18-55mm.

@Mastamarek I never went away! Remember I do many more reviews at cameralabs . com - only a handful are shown here. I won't be doing any pro bodies though.
@Anniekynz Hi Annie, I'm actually from the UK, but you generously allowed me to stay in your beautiful country!
@ComradeDragon It's not sunny all of the time here, but it is quite a lot! It's in Queenstown, NZ.
@jsiszero Thanks! Maybe I shouldn't describe it as a brief video tour anymore!
@DIGItalColourMedia Thankyou, that's very kind! Spread the word!
@ptlofts Here are the "extra" features that the 7D offers:
1.) Magnesium body.
@AndTuts You need a class 6 memory card.
@bonkerzTV Thanks, you're welcome.
@RegoParkpoet Thankyou! This video just scratches the surface of my full review at cameralabs . com!
@JimmyJackFarm the equipment is listed in my channel profile...
@AZNFlipy12 Yes it's moving - that's the effect of the Earth rotating.
@Bennallick I'd go for a Sony SLT or Nikon 1
@TheUltimateTechShow Didn't you watch the video?
The 40D is an older camera which preceded DSLRs having video modes.
@himalay7 If I understood what the problem was I might take offense, but I still don't get it.
So excited to get this camera
@Rob Scallon Of all the places I find you, was not expecting you to be here.
@@thomasjin1415 me too
@alexmoto1984 Thanks! They're from Paul Smith in London.
